    Fatigue failure of welded connections at orthotropic bridges

    Orthotropic decks were applied to the long span bridges after World War II due to several advantages, such as light weight, high strength, few deck joints, durability, rapid construction, life-cycle economy. The fatigue problem of orthotropic decks was realized twenty years ago since fatigue failure was found. In the past two decades large amount of studies and investigations were carried out and fruitful achievements were obtained. It was found that most of the fatigue cracks were occurred at the welded connection details, such as rib-to-deck plate, rib-to-diaphragm, and rib-to-diaphragm-to-deck plate (RDDP). These connections are sensitive to fatigue cracking due to high concentrated stress and residual stress at welded connections. In this paper practical fatigue failure cases at the welded connections, ease to occur fatigue cracking, are presented, and analyzed through a numerical modeling of orthotropic deck via FE (finite element) software. Furthermore, the improvement technologies of fatigue are also discussed. The results of the analysis can be contributed to the evaluation of the fatigue design for the orthotropic deck

    Permanent monitoring of thin structures with low-cost devices

    Recently, structural monitoring technology invested in methodologies that give direct information on structures' stress state. Optic fibers, strain gauges, pressure cells give real-time data on the stress condition of a structural element, often determining the area where peak stresses have been reached, with a clear advantage over other less direct monitoring methodologies, such as, e.g., the use of accelerometers and inverse analysis to estimate internal forces. In addition, stresses can be recorded in a data log for analysis after a loading event, as well as for taking into account the lifelong stress state of the structure. Beams and columns of a reinforced concrete frame can be effectively monitored for flexural loads. Differently, thin shells are most of their lifespan under membrane regime, and, when properly designed, they rarely move to the bending regime. Our proposal is to monitor the stress in thin structures by small-sized low- cost devices able to record the stress history at key locations, sending alerts when necessary, with the aim of ensuring safety against the risk of collapse, or simply to perform maintenance/repairing activities. Such devices are realized with cheap off-the-shelf electronics and traditional strain gauges. The application examples are given as laboratory tests performed on a reinforced concrete plate, a masonry panel, and a steel beam. Results shows that the permanent monitoring control of stresses can be conveniently carried out on new structures using low-cost devices of the type we designed and realized in-house

    The problem of determining the structural safety level of buildings and civil engineering infrastructures (CEIs) is raising growing concern worldwide. Most of the reinforced concrete constructions have a design life not greater than 100 years, and today it is necessary to face the problem of assessing their level of safety and structural integrity. Such problem is even more pressing when a construction is subjected to extreme environmental conditions. The long-term goal of this study is the realization of wireless low- cost devices, and a data management software, for the structural health monitoring of buildings and CEIs, with remotely controlled sensors embedded in, or installed on, the structural elements, to measure stresses together with accelerations. Once equipped with such system, each construction can become part of the Internet of Things, permitting users and authorities to be alerted in case structural safety is diminished or compromised. A crucial aspect is the unaltered preservation of measurement data over time, which cannot just rely on third parties, and for which it is necessary the exploitation of suitable data-protection technologies. This study have been carried out by experimental testing and validation, both in lab and on site, of the monitoring devices designed and realized. Results show that it is possible to realize low-cost monitoring systems, and related installation techniques, for integration in every new or existing buildings and CEIs

    Impact on mental health, disease management, and socioeconomic modifications in hematological patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy

    Background: Hematological patients are a highly vulnerable population with an increased risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms due to their immunocompromised status. COVID-19 has proven to cause serious mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression in the general population. However, data on the psycho-social impact of COVID-19 on hematological patients are lacking.Objectives: This study aims to examine the psychological well-being of hematological patients in Italy during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it seeks to explore the association between modifications in the management of hematological diseases and employment status of these patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting mental health outcomes.Design and Methods: A survey using the DASS-21 questionnaire was administered to 1105 hematological patients. Data analysis was conducted using the R software, and logistic regression analysis was performed to predict the association between hematological patient/general population and employment status with DASS scores.Results: The hematological patient population reported significantly higher levels of depression (OR 0.947, 95% CI 0.966-0.982, p < 0.001), anxiety (OR 0.948, 95% CI 0.939-0.958, p < 0.001), and stress (OR 0.984, 95% CI 0.977-0.992, p < 0.001) compared with the general population. A significant relationship has been found in stress between employed and unemployed patients (OR 1.015, 95% CI 1.000-1.030, p = 0.044), as well as in the control group (OR 1.024, 95% CI 1.010-1.039, p = 0.001). In addition, employment status is significantly related to depression, anxiety, and stress in both the hematological patient group and the general population.Conclusion: During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, hematological patients had elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared with the general population. The delay in their treatment and employment status played a role in their mental health outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of further research to gain deeper insight into the long-term psychological effects and explore effective strategies for managing mental health in similar crises

    Nell’ambito dell’attività di ricerca e monitoraggio dell’INGV, riveste notevole importanza la Rete Sismica Nazionale RSN, quale struttura di sorveglianza sismica del territorio italiano. La rete, che ad oggi conta più di 240 stazioni uniformemente distribuite su tutto il territorio italiano, si avvale di una rete di pronto intervento (RPI) che ha l’obiettivo primario di incrementare, in zona epicentrale, il numero di stazioni, per una migliore localizzazione della sequenza sismica in corso.     Effects and outcome of a policy of intermittent imatinib treatment in elderly patients with chronic myeloid leukemia.

    none25We report a study of an alternative treatment schedule of imatinib (IM) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Seventy-six Philadelphia-positive (Ph+), BCR-ABL-positive patients aged 65 years or older who had been treated with IM for more than 2 years and who were in stable complete cytogenetic response (CCgR) and major molecular response (MMR) were enrolled in a single-arm study to test the effects of a policy of intermittent IM (INTERIM) therapy for 1 month on and 1 month off. With a minimum follow-up of 4 years, 13 patients (17%) lost CCgR and MMR and 14 (18%) lost MMR only. All these patients resumed continuous IM and all but one (lost to follow-up) regained CCgR and MMR. No patients progressed to accelerated or blastic phase or developed clonal chromosomal abnormalities in Ph+ cells or BCR-ABL mutations. In elderly Ph+ CML patients carefully selected for a stable CCgR (lasting >2 years), the policy of INTERIM treatment affected the markers of residual disease, but not the clinical outcomes (overall and progression-free survival).
