Atlas of Science, Visualizing What We Know
Katy Börner is Professor of Information Science in the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University. Katy Börner who says that science maps help to navigate, understand, and communicate the dynamic and changing structure of science and technology, describes succesfull mapping techniques in this book, Atlas of Science. The book includes 30 full page maps. At the second part of the book called “History of Science Maps”, a time-line of science mapping studies is given based on 1930-1960, 1960- 1982, 1982-1998, 1998-2000, 2000-2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2005, 2006-2007 time periods. The book that consists of 5 parts, the other twointerestingheadings are “Toward The Science of Science” and “The Future of Science Maps”
Mapping The Structure and Evolution of Electronic Publishing as a Research Field Using Co-citation Analysis
Electronic publishing can be defined as making full‐texts of journal articles and books available through the network. Although e‐publishing has been in existence for over 30 years in various forms such as CD‐ROMs, it owes much of its current level of development to the Internet and the Web. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of e‐publishing as a research field over the last 31 years using CiteSpace, an information visualization tool. It maps the intellectual structure of e‐publishing based on 493 articles that appeared in professional literature on the subject between 1979 and 2009. Document co‐citation and author co‐citation patterns and patterns of noun phrases and keywords of papers on e‐publishing are visualized through a number of co‐citation maps. Maps show the major research strands and hot topics in e‐publishing such as “open access” and would improve our understanding of the e‐publishing as a research field
Mapping the Intellectual Structure of the Open Access Field Through Co-citation Analysis.
Open access has been one of the major research trends and hottest topics in electronic publishing. This paper aims to assess the evolution of open access as a research field using bibliometric and scientific visualization techniques. It maps the intellectual structure of open access based on 281 articles that appeared in professional literature on the topic between 2000 and 2010. Using bibliometric and co-citation analyses, co-citation patterns of papers are visualized through a number of co-citation maps. CiteSpace was used to analyze and visualize co-citation maps. Maps show major areas of research, prominent articles, major knowledge producers and journals in the field of open access. The letter written by Steven Lawrence (“Free online availability substantially increases a paper’s impact”, 2001) appears to be the most prominent source as it was cited the most. The journal article by Kristin Antelman (“Do open Access articles have a greater research impact”, 2004) and the report by Alma Swan and Sheridan Brown (“Open access self-archiving: An author study”, 2005) are the second most highly cited papers in the network. JASIS / JASIST is the most frequently cited journal by the authors writing on open access. The most recent research topics appear to be institutional repositories, open access publishing/open access journals and scientific communication. Stevan Harnad is most frequently co-cited author, followed by Alma Swan, Steven Lawrence and Peter Suber. The preliminary findings show that open access is an emerging research field. Findings of this study can be used to identify landmark papers along with their impact in terms of providing different perspectives and engendering new research areas
Türkiye Kütüphanecilik ve Bilgibilim Literatürünün Entellektüel Haritasının Çıkarılması: Bir Yazar Ortak Atıf Analizi Çalışması
Mapping/visualization studies reveal the characteristics of intellectual structure and
scientific communication of research fields such as the most prominent studies, the most
important subfields and the most frequently cited authors. Although the number of
studies on mapping and visualization in the international literature is on the rise, there is
as yet no mapping/visualization study carried out on a national level.
This study aims to map the Turkish Library and Information Science (LIS) literature to
find out the most prominent authors and subjects in the national literature between 1974
and 2009. Accordingly, the main hypothesis of this study is that “The author cocitation
analysis of the Turkish LIS literature shows that the research carried out in this field is
mainly concentrated on general subjects”. To test the hypothesis, we gathered the
reference lists of a total of 648 master’s/PhD theses and refereed articles and performed
author cocitation analysis, clustering and multidimensional scaling analysis on data.
Findings indicate that the most frequently studied topics in the Turkish LIS literature
between 1974 and 2009 have been Public Libraries, University Libraries and Electronic
Information Services. A small number of authors are highly cited in the Turkish LIS
literature. As usual, master’s and PhD theses contained more citations than those of
refereed articles and Turkish authors were cited much more often. Some highly cited or
co-cited authors did not seem to influence the formation of clusters because of the
general nature of their contributions. Also, Turkish authors tend to carry out research on
several subjects rather than specializing in a few. Thus, the topics studied in the Turkish
LIS literature seem to differ to a certain extent from those (e.g., bibliometrics and
information retrieval) of the international LIS literature. This study is important to show the implementation of cocitation analysis and
visualization studies to the LIS literature of Turkey and the results of author cocitation
analysis. The results of such author cocitation analyses can be used to determine the
prominent or underdeveloped research fields in a country so that funds for research and
development can be allocated on the basis of more informed decisions.DÜZYOL, Güleda. Mapping Intellectual Structure of Turkish Library and Information

Çalışmanın sonucunda elde edilen bulgular hipotezi destekler niteliktedir.
