Mathematics without formulas?

Beyond the trivial observation that signs of many kinds play a central role in all mathematical activities I will give a more far reaching motivation and justification for the relevance of semiotic theories within mathematics education. This has to do with a widespread tendency – at least in my view – in school mathematics to marginalize mathematical operations and calculations be they arithmetical, algebraic or geometric. I will first describe the main features of that tendency and then try to point out arguments against it deriving from semiotic positions proposed by Peirce and Wittgenstein. Impressionen aus (fast) vier Jahrzehnten Mathematikdidaktik

Dieser Essai  ist  ausgehend  von  einer  Anregung  durch Herrn Vohns die Ausarbeitung eines Vortrages am Fachdidaktik-Tag der IMST Tagung in Klagenfurt im Juni 2013 und er bedarf einiger Vorbemerkungen. Ich bezeichne den Beitrag als einen Essai über Impressionen, weil es hier vorwiegend um persönliche Eindrücke und Erinnerungen aus meiner Arbeit im Gebiet der Mathematik-Didaktik geht, die sukzessive  nach  meiner  Berufung  (als Professor für Mathematik mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Didaktik) an die Universität Klagenfurt (damals Hochschule für Bildungswissenschaften) im Jahre 1974 begann und sich nach vorsichtigen Anfängen zu meinem Hauptarbeitsgebiet entwickelte
