Anurans of the Estacao Ecologica de Santa Barbara, a remnant of open Cerrado formations in the state of Sao Paulo
Although São Paulo is the state with the most knowledge about anurans from Brazil, it still has important knowledge gaps about this group especially in the remnants of the Cerrado Biome. Only 0.5% of this biome is protected by conservation units in the state and remaining fragments suffer threats that include isolation, risk of fire and invasion by exotic plant species. The aim of this study was to obtain information on anurans species recorded at Estação Ecológica de Santa Bárbara, one of the few remnants in Middle Paranapanema river basin that has a predominance of open Cerrado formations. The inventory was conducted monthly from October/2008 to March/2009, totaling 30 sampling days. Surveys were conducted using pitfall traps with drift fences, incidental encounters and acoustic and visual searches. We recorded 33 anuran species, belonging to 14 genera and six families (Bufonidae, Cycloramphidae, Hylidae, Leiuperidae, Leptodactylidae e Microhylidae). Although species richness was not different between open and forest vegetation types, there was a greater abundance of anurans in the open formations, reflecting the largest association of individuals to water bodies present in open phytophysiognomies during the reproductive period. This research is an important contribution to expanding the knowledge about anurans species in the Cerrado, one of the priority global hotspots for biodiversity conservation.Although São Paulo is the state with the most knowledge about anurans from Brazil, it still has important knowledge gaps about this group especially in the remnants of the Cerrado Biome. Composition, species richness and abundance of amphibians and reptiles in the Upper and Middle Paranapanema, São Paulo state, Brazil.
The aim of this study is to collect information on the diversity of amphibians and reptiles in the hydrographic basins of the Upper and Middle Paranapanema, São Paulo state and assess the impact that cattle grazing can provoke on the species richness and abundance of anurans and lizards of open Cerrado formations. The species richness of anurans reported in the Upper Paranapanema is far greater to that found in the Middle Paranapanema, with a decreasing gradient in the richness from the southern and southeastern portion of Upper Paranapanema, where the ombrophilous forest predominates, towards the Middle Paranapanema in which Cerrado formations and seasonal forests are dominant. Cattle grazing did not cause negative effects on the species richness and total abundance of the anurans and lizards sampled. It is possible that the intensity of grazing was insufficient to cause significant changes in the structure of the phytophysiognomies, which could have minimized alterations in the ecological niches of the species
Herpetofauna from Estação Ecológica de Bauru, a fragment of Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
conhecida no país.
A amostragem
procura auditiva e procura visual. Foram registradas 20 espécies de anfíbios pertencentes
a nove gêneros e quatro famílias (Bufonidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae e Microhylidae) e
oito espécies de répteis pertencentes a oito gêneros e sete famílias (Amphisbaenidae,
Dactyloidae, Gymnophthalmidae, Mabuyidae, Teiidae, Dipsadidae e Viperidae).
The herpetofauna of São Paulo state is the best known in Brazil.
However, there are still considerable sampling gaps at the natural vegetation remnants
present in the central region of the state. The purpose of this study was to obtain
information on species composition, species richness and abundance of amphibians and
reptiles recorded at Estação Ecológica de Bauru, a fragment of Atlantic Forest in the
Midwest region of the state of São Paulo. The inventory was conducted monthly from
October/2007 to March/2008, totaling 30 sampling days. Surveys were performed
using pitfall traps, incidental encounters and acoustic and visual searches. I recorded
20 amphibian species, belonging to nine genera and four families (Bufonidae, Hylidae,
Leptodactylidae e Microhylidae), and eight reptile species belonging to eight genera and
seven families (Amphisbaenidae, Dactyloidae, Gymnophthalmidae, Mabuyidae, Teiidae,
Dipsadidae and Viperidae). This study expands the knowledge about the diversity of
amphibians and reptiles in the Atlantic Forest, a global biodiversity hotspot
