Time and dose dependency of bone-sarcomas in patients injected with radium-224
The time course and dose dependency of the incidence of bone-sarcomas among 900 German patients treated with high doses of radium-224 is analysed in terms of a proportional hazards model with a log-normal dependency of time to tumor and a linear-quadratic dose relation. The deduced dose dependency agrees well with a previous analysis in terms of a non-parametric proportional hazards model, and confirms the temporal distribution which has been used in the Radioepidemiological Tables of NIH. However, the linear-quadratic dose-response model gives a risk estimate for low doses which is somewhat less than half that obtained under the assumption of linearity.

On Glauber modes in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory
Gluon interactions involving spectator partons in collisions at hadronic
machines are investigated. We find a class of examples in which a mode, called

Non-global Structure of the O({\alpha}_s^2) Dijet Soft Function
High energy scattering processes involving jets generically involve matrix
elements of light- like Wilson lines, known as soft functions. These describe
the structure of soft contributions to observables and encode color and
kinematic correlations between jets. We compute the dijet soft function to
O({\alpha}_s^2) as a function of the two jet invariant masses, focusing on
terms not determined by its renormalization group evolution that have a
non-separable dependence on these masses. Our results include non-global single
and double logarithms, and analytic results for the full set of non-logarithmic
contributions as well. Using a recent result for the thrust constant, we
present the complete O({\alpha}_s^2) soft function for dijet production in both

Observations of Reduced Electron Gyroscale Fluctuations in National Spherical Torus Experiment H-Mode Plasmas with Large E X B Flow Shear
Electron gyroscale fluctuation measurements in National Spherical Torus Experiment H-mode plasmas with large toroidal rotation reveal fluctuations consistent with electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence. Large toroidal rotation in National Spherical Torus Experiment plasmas with neutral beam injection generates ExB flow shear rates comparable to ETG linear growth rates. Enhanced fluctuations occur when the electron temperature gradient is marginally stable with respect to the ETG linear critical gradient. Fluctuation amplitudes decrease when the ExB flow shear rate exceeds ETG linear growth rates. The observations indicate that ExB flow shear can be an effective suppression mechanism for ETG turbulence.X1129sciescopu
Radiation-induced root surface caries restored with glass-ionomer cement placed in conventional and ART cavity preparations: Results at two years

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Background: There are no published studies comparing the clinical performances of more-viscous glass-ionomer cement (GIC) restorations when placed using conventional and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) cavity preparation methods to restore root surface caries. Methods: One dentist used encapsulated Fuji IX GP and Ketac-Molar to restore 72 conventional and 74 ART cavity preparations for 15 patients who had received cervicofacial radiation therapy. Two assessors evaluated the restorations at six, 12, and 24 months for retention, marginal defects and surface wear, and recurrent caries. Results: After two years, the cumulative restoration successes were 65.2 per cent for the conventional and 66.2 per cent for the ART cavity preparations, without statistical or clinical significance (P>0.50). Restoration dislodgement accounted for 82.8 per cent and marginal defects for 17.2 per cent of all failures. There were no instances of unsatisfactory restoration wear or recurrent caries observed. Teeth with three or more restored cervical surfaces accounted for 79.3 per cent of all failures (P<0.0001). Conclusions: For root surface caries restored with GIC, the use of hand instruments only with the ART method was an equally effective alternative to conventional rotary instrumentation for cavity preparation. NLL soft and Coulomb resummation for squark and gluino production at the LHC
We present predictions of the total cross sections for pair production of
squarks and gluinos at the LHC, including the stop-antistop production process.
Our calculation supplements full fixed-order NLO predictions with resummation
of threshold logarithms and Coulomb singularities at next-to-leading
logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, including bound-state effects. The numerical effect
of higher-order Coulomb terms can be as big or larger than that of soft-gluon
corrections. For a selection of benchmark points accessible with data from the
2010-2012 LHC runs, resummation leads to an enhancement of the total inclusive
squark and gluino production cross section in the 15-30 % range. For individual
production processes of gluinos, the corrections can be much larger. The
theoretical uncertainty in the prediction of the hard-scattering cross sections
