Lifting Bell inequalities
A Bell inequality defined for a specific experimental configuration can always be extended to a situation involving more observers, measurement settings, or measurement outcomes. In this article, such "liftings" of Bell inequalities are studied. It is shown that if the original inequality defines a facet of the polytope of local joint outcome probabilities then the lifted one also defines a facet of the more complex polytope
2MASS J06164006-6407194: The First Outer Halo L Subdwarf
We present the serendipitous discovery of an L subdwarf, 2MASS
J06164006-6407194, in a search of the Two Micron All Sky Survey for T dwarfs.
Its spectrum exhibits features indicative of both a cool and metal poor
atmosphere including a heavily pressured-broadened K I resonant doublet, Cs I
and Rb I lines, molecular bands of CaH, TiO, CrH, FeH, and H2O, and enhanced
collision induced absorption of H2. We assign 2MASS 0616-6407 a spectral type
of sdL5 based on a comparison of its red optical spectrum to that of near
solar-metallicity L dwarfs. Its high proper motion (mu =1.405+-0.008 arcsec
yr-1), large radial velocity (Vrad = 454+-15 km s-1), estimated uvw velocities
(94, -573, 125) km s-1 and Galactic orbit with an apogalacticon at ~29 kpc are
indicative of membership in the outer halo making 2MASS 0616-6407 the first
ultracool member of this population.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

representation and manipulation of information, not a theory about the
mechanics of nonclassical waves or particles. The notion of quantum information
is to be understood as a new physical primitive -- just as, following
Einstein's special theory of relativity, a field is no longer regarded as the
physical manifestation of vibrations in a mechanical medium, but recognized as

Treatment outcome in an SI model with evolutionary resistance: a Darwinian model for the evolution of resistance
We consider a Darwinian (evolutionary game theoretic) version of a standard susceptible-infectious SI model in which the resistance of the disease causing pathogen to a treatment that prevents death to infected individuals is subject to evolutionary adaptation. We determine the existence and stability of all equilibria, both disease-free and endemic, and use the results to determine conditions under which the treatment will succeed or fail. Of particular interest are conditions under which a successful treatment in the absence of resistance adaptation (i.e. one that leads to a stable disease-free equilibrium) will succeed or fail when pathogen resistance is adaptive. These conditions are determined by the relative breadths of treatment effectiveness and infection transmission rate distributions as functions of pathogen resistance
Driven Pile Capacity in Clay and Drilled Shaft Capacity in Rock from Field Load Tests
In this study, two case histories of deep foundations are discussed, including driven piles and drilled shafts. The first case history is an assessment of driven pile capacity in clay. As part of selecting the deep foundation system, steel pipe, concrete, and timber piles were driven at the site. Static compression and uplift load tests were performed on the concrete and timber piles, while only static compression tests were performed on the steel pipe piles. Measured pile capacities from the static load tests were compared to predicted pile capacities, which were obtained from empirical design methods employing laboratory and in-situ test results. The data demonstrate that the traditional alpha method results in somewhat conservative predictions for the test piles, regardless of whether the values of undrained shear strength (su) are obtained directly from the unconfined compression (UC) test or are inferred from a correlation with the CPTU as equivalent direct simple shear (DSS) values of su. The second case study involves an evaluation of the axial and lateral capacities of drilled shafts in rock to support a concrete gated dam. The test drilled shafts were step-tapered from 5.5-ft diameter through the soil zone to 5-ft diameter in the rock socket. Axial and lateral load tests were performed on drilled shafts embedded in soft to medium hard clayey shale and claystone overlain by granular alluvium. The data demonstrate that longstanding methods of determining ultimate side resistance are conservative relative to the measured values, as are customary presumptive values, but that predictions using one evolving method can be unconservative in the absence of field verification. In addition, the shafts performed satisfactorily under the applied design load, exhibiting minimal lateral deflection within the rock socket
Echo traces associated with thermoclines
Echoes received from the depth of the thermocline in Windermere, the North Sea, the Barents Sea and off Spitsbergen have been associated with aggregations of plankton organisms: zooplankton at a density of 25/litre in Windermere and phytoplankton at a density of 100,000 cells/litre (Thalassiosira gravida and Chaetoceros sp.) in the Barents Sea
FIRE Spectroscopy of Five Late-type T Dwarfs Discovered with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer
We present the discovery of five late-type T dwarfs identified with the
Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Low-resolution near-infrared
spectroscopy obtained with the Magellan Folded-port InfraRed Echellette (FIRE)
reveal strong water and methane absorption in all five sources, and spectral
indices and comparison to spectral templates indicate classifications ranging
from T5.5 to T8.5:. The spectrum of the latest-type source, WISE J1812+2721, is
an excellent match to that of the T8.5 companion brown dwarf Wolf 940B.
WISE-based spectrophotometric distance estimates place these T dwarfs at 12-13
pc from the Sun, assuming they are single. Preliminary fits of the spectral
data to the atmosphere models of Saumon & Marley indicate effective
temperatures ranging from 600 K to 930 K, both cloudy and cloud-free
atmospheres, and a broad range of ages and masses. In particular, two sources
show evidence of both low surface gravity and cloudy atmospheres, tentatively
supporting a trend noted in other young brown dwarfs and exoplanets. In
contrast, the high proper motion T dwarf WISE J2018-7423 exhibits a suppressed
K-band peak and blue spectrophotometric J-K colors indicative of an old,
massive brown dwarf; however, it lacks the broadened Y-band peak seen in
metal-poor counterparts. These results illustrate the broad diversity of

A Family Day program enhances knowledge about medical school culture and necessary supports
BACKGROUND: A Family Day program was implemented at Indiana University School of Medicine to educate the families and friends of in-coming medical students about the rigors of medical school and the factors that contribute to stress. METHODS: Surveys that assessed knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes about medical school were administered to participants before and after the program. RESULTS: After the program, participants showed a significant improvement in their understanding of medical school culture and the importance of support systems for medical students. Post-test scores improved by an average of 29% (P < 0.001) in each of the two years this program was administered. CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of family members and other loved ones in pre-matriculation educational programs may serve to mitigate the stress associated with medical school by enhancing the students' social support systems
