    Handgun carrying among youth in the United States

    Despite a wealth of research finding that adolescents who carry handguns are involved in risky behaviors, there has been little exploration into the heterogeneity of this behavior. Using a pooled sample of 12- to 17-year-olds from the National Study on Drug Use and Health who report past-year handgun carrying (N = 7,872), this study identified four subgroups of handgun carriers: low risk (n = 3,831; 47.93%), alcohol and marijuana users (n = 1,591; 20.16%), fighters (n = 1,430; 19.40%), and severe externalizers (n = 1,020, 12.51%). These subgroups differed on demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial characteristics. Findings are discussed in light of prevention and focused deterrence

    EPR Steering Inequalities from Entropic Uncertainty Relations

    We use entropic uncertainty relations to formulate inequalities that witness Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering correlations in diverse quantum systems. We then use these inequalities to formulate symmetric EPR-steering inequalities using the mutual information. We explore the differing natures of the correlations captured by one-way and symmetric steering inequalities, and examine the possibility of exclusive one-way steerability in two-qubit states. Furthermore, we show that steering inequalities can be extended to generalized positive operator valued measures (POVMs), and we also derive hybrid-steering inequalities between alternate degrees of freedom.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Fundamental analysis, stock returns and high B/M companies

    Ιn this paper we initially estimate the financial performance of high BM companies based on the analysis of profitability, liquidity-leverage and operating efficiency ratios. The performance of the specific group as a whole, was found to be quite poor and that is why it is reflected in a high BM ratio score for the companies involved. The research then showed that a portfolio of the best performing high BM companies, chosen through the F-score mechanism, exhibits a statistically significant higher mean of market-adjusted as well as raw returns, compared to any other type of classification of the companies of the category. The research was conducted for the period 2010-2015 and applied to companies listed in the North America Stock Exchange Markets.peer-reviewe

    Behavioral Ecology and Management of Suburban Coyotes in Westchester County, New York

    The coyote (Canis latrans) is now established as a relatively common inhabitant of nearly all landscapes in the northeastern United States. However, the ecology and management of this larger, mid-sized carnivore in urban areas is poorly understood, and creates much uncertainty for residents and wildlife managers alike. Detailed behavioral ecology studies are important to understand the role of the coyote in urbanized landscapes and their interactions with humans. We are studying the behavioral ecology of coyotes in Westchester County, N.Y., a predominantly urban county directly north of New York City. We investigated the diet of coyotes through trail-based fecal collections to identify potential anthropogenic food items that could lead to negative human-coyote interactions. Concurrently, we examined the spatial ecology of coyotes using both VHF-and GPS-based telemetry. Preliminary results from the diet analysis indicated that \u3e50% of the scats collected contained white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) remains. Other natural food items accounted for most of the remaining food items. No domestic dog remains have been identified in scats and only 4 scats contained domestic cat remains-3 of which were collected during the same day along the same collection trail. Spatial ecology data indicated that coyote home ranges (n = 26) averaged 5.53 km2 ± 3.18 SD, and ranged from 1.16-12.02 km2. Habitat use revealed that 71% of coyote locations (n = 1,987) were in natural lands, and 28% were in residential, recreational and agricultural areas. While these findings indicated the risk for negative interactions was lower than for other areas of the U.S., potential does remain for conflicts to occur. Overall, resident coyotes appear to be living natural lives and remain embedded in natural processes, while avoiding human interactions in developed landscapes

    The main aim of this study is to predict the daily stock exchange price index of the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) using back propagation neural networks. We construct the neural network based on the minimum embedding dimension of the corresponding strange attractor. Multistep prediction for nine days ahead is achieved with this particular network indicating the increased possibility of this technique for immediate forecasts for very timeshort data sets, mostly daily and weekly.peer-reviewe

    Infrared measurements of atmospheric constituents

    The objective of this program is to obtain data concerning the concentration versus altitude of various constituents of interest in the photochemistry of the stratospheric ozone layer. Data pertinent to this objective are obtained using balloon-borne instruments to measure the atmospheric transmission and emission in the mid infrared. In addition to obtaining constituent profile information, the spectral data obtained are also used to identify absorption or emission features which may interfere with the retrieval of constituent data from satellite instruments using lower spectral resolution. The spectral resolution obtained with the solar spectral system is 0.0025 cm(exp -1) and represents about a factor of 5 greater resolution than any solar spectra previously obtained in this spectral region. As a result of the increase in spectral resolution, a large number of features are observed in these spectra which were not observed in previous studies. Identification and analysis of these features is in progress. The results of this analysis to date shows a number of HNO3 features which have not been observed before, and these occur where they will interfere with the retrieval of other constituents. An example of the interference is the occurrence of features in the 780.2 cm(exp -1) region which overlap the ClONO2 feature which will be used for retrieval of ClONO2 by the CLAES instrument on UARS. A number of features due to COF2 were also identified in the 1250 cm(exp -1) region which may interfere with retrieval of N2O5

    Moon-tracking orbits using motorized tethers for continuous earth–moon payload exchanges

    For human colonization of the moon to become reality, an efficient and regular means of exchanging resources between the Earth and the moon must be established. One possibility is to pass and receive payloads at regular intervals between a symmetrically laden motorized momentum-exchange tether orbiting about Earth and a second orbiting about the moon. There are significant challenges associated with this method, among the greatest of which is the development of a system that incorporates the complex motion of the moon into its operational architecture in addition to conducting these exchanges on a per-lunar-orbit basis. One way of achieving this is to use a motorized tether orbiting Earth and tracking the nodes of the moon’s orbit to allow payload exchanges to be undertaken periodically with the arrival of the moon at either of these nodes. Tracking these nodes is achieved by arranging the tether to orbit Earth with a critical inclination, thus rendering its argument of perigee stationary in addition to using the precession effects resulting from an oblate Earth. Using this in conjunction with pre-emptive adjustments to its angle of right ascension, the tether will periodically realign itself with these nodes simultaneously with the arrival of the moon
