    HIV testing practices among men who have sex with men in Buenos Aires, Argentina

    The objective of the study was to explore HIV-testing practices among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in light of current international health guidelines that recommend frequent HIV testing for MSM who engage in high-risk behavior. Participants, who were recruited using respondent-driven sampling (RDS), were 500 mostly young, nongay-identified MSM of low socioeconomic status, high levels of unemployment, living mainly in the less-affluent areas surrounding Buenos Aires, and lacking health insurance. They provided blood samples for HIV testing and responded to a Computer Assisted Self Interview. Fifty-two percent had never been tested for HIV, and 20% had been tested only once; 17% were found to be HIV infected, of whom almost half were unaware of their status. Main reasons for never having tested previously were: not feeling at risk, fear of finding out results, and not knowing where to get tested. Among those previously tested, men had been tested a median of 2 times with their most recent test having occurred a median of 2.7 years prior to study enrollment. Of those who had not tested positive before entering the study, only 41% returned for their results. HIV testing was infrequent and insufficient for early detection of infection, entry into treatment, and protection of sexual partners. This was particularly the case among nongay-identified MSM. Testing campaigns should aim to help MSM become aware of their risk behavior, decrease fear of testing by explaining available treatment resources and decreasing the stigma associated with HIV, and by publicizing information about free and confidential testing locations. Rapid HIV testing should be made available to eliminate the need for a return visit and make results immediately available to individuals who are tested.Fil: Carballo Diéguez, Alex.     Hacking for Good - Workshop Summary

    At the 2019 Charleston Library Conference, five facilitators from a diversity of organizations led a pre-conference called Hacking for Good. The goal of the half-day pre-conference was to introduce participants to the “hacking mindset” beyond the traditionally understood technology-driven terminology. In this context, hacking refersred to an approach of identifying a challenge or set of challenges in their respective knowledge organizations and gathering a set of techniques or approaches to address and overcome those challenges. The pre-conference provided a highly interactive and supportive environment to consider all aspects of a workplace challenge related to workflows and personnel and determine the most effective tools to tackle that challenge

    Experimental hut evaluation of bednets treated with an organophosphate (chlorpyrifos-methyl) or a pyrethroid (lambdacyhalothrin) alone and in combination against insecticide-resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes

    BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistant mosquitoes are becoming increasingly common in parts of Africa. It is important to identify alternative insecticides which, if necessary, could be used to replace or supplement the pyrethroids for use on treated nets. Certain compounds of an earlier generation of insecticides, the organophosphates may have potential as net treatments. METHODS: Comparative studies of chlorpyrifos-methyl (CM), an organophosphate with low mammalian toxicity, and lambdacyhalothrin (L), a pyrethroid, were conducted in experimental huts in CĂŽte d'Ivoire, West Africa. Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes from the area are resistant to pyrethroids and organophosphates (kdr and insensitive acetylcholinesterase Ace.1(R)). Several treatments and application rates on intact or holed nets were evaluated, including single treatments, mixtures, and differential wall/ceiling treatments. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: All of the treatments were effective in reducing blood feeding from sleepers under the nets and in killing both species of mosquito, despite the presence of the kdr and Ace.1(R )genes at high frequency. In most cases, the effects of the various treatments did not differ significantly. Five washes of the nets in soap solution did not reduce the impact of the insecticides on A. gambiae mortality, but did lead to an increase in blood feeding. The three combinations performed no differently from the single insecticide treatments, but the low dose mixture performed encouragingly well indicating that such combinations might be used for controlling insecticide resistant mosquitoes. Mortality of mosquitoes that carried both Ace.1(R )and Ace.1(S )genes did not differ significantly from mosquitoes that carried only Ace.1(S )genes on any of the treated nets, indicating that the Ace.1(R )allele does not confer effective resistance to chlorpyrifos-methyl under the realistic conditions of an experimental hut

    The reaction of 2,4-dichloro-5-(trifluoro­meth­yl)pyrimidine with 1H-pyrazole gave two structural isomers in a 1:1 ratio that were separable by chromatography. The title compound, C8H4ClF3N4, was the first product to elute and was characterized in the present study to confirm that substitution by the pyrazolyl group had occurred at position 4. The mol­ecule (with the exception of the F atoms) is essentially planar, with a mean deviation of 0.034 Å from the least-squares plane through all non-H and non-F atoms. The bond angles in the pyrimidine ring show a pronounced alternating pattern with three angles, including those at the two N atoms being narrower, and the remaining three wider than 120°

    Constraints on Gaussian Error Channels and Measurements for Quantum Communication

    Joint Gaussian measurements of two quantum systems can be used for quantum communication between remote parties, as in teleportation or entanglement swapping protocols. Many types of physical error sources throughout a protocol can be modeled by independent Gaussian error channels acting prior to measurement. In this work we study joint Gaussian measurements on two modes A\mathsf{A} and B\mathsf{B} that take place after independent single-mode Gaussian error channels, for example loss with parameters lAl_\mathsf{A} and lBl_\mathsf{B} followed by added noise with parameters nAn_\mathsf{A} and nBn_\mathsf{B}. We show that, for any Gaussian measurement, if lA+lB+nA+nB≄1l_\mathsf{A} + l_\mathsf{B} + n_\mathsf{A} + n_\mathsf{B} \geq 1 then the effective total measurement is separable and unsuitable for teleportation or entanglement swapping of arbitrary input states. If this inequality is not satisfied then there exists a Gaussian measurement that remains inseparable. We extend the results and determine the set of pairs of single-mode Gaussian error channels that render all Gaussian measurements separable

    Wave breaking turbulence at the offshore front of the Columbia River Plume

The definitive version was published in Geophysical Research Letters 41 (2014): 8987–8993, doi:10.1002/2014GL062274.Observations at the Columbia River plume show that wave breaking is an important source of turbulence at the offshore front, which may contribute to plume mixing. The lateral gradient of current associated with the plume front is sufficient to block (and break) shorter waves. The intense whitecapping that then occurs at the front is a significant source of turbulence, which diffuses downward from the surface according to a scaling determined by the wave height and the gradient of wave energy flux. This process is distinct from the shear-driven mixing that occurs at the interface of river water and ocean water.     The crystal structure of the title compound, C5H3BrN2S, shows that bromination of 1H-thieno[2,3-d]imidazole with N-bromo­succinimide in acetonitrile occurs at position 5 of the bicyclic system. The mol­ecule is almost planar, with a mean deviation of 0.015 Å from the least-squares plane through all the non-H atoms. In the crystal, N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the mol­ecules into infinite C(4) chains running along [101]
