The Tits alternative for non-spherical triangles of groups
Triangles of groups have been introduced by Gersten and Stallings. They are,
roughly speaking, a generalisation of the amalgamated free product of two
groups and occur in the framework of Corson diagrams. First, we prove an
intersection theorem for Corson diagrams. Then, we focus on triangles of
groups. It has been shown by Howie and Kopteva that the colimit of a hyperbolic
triangle of groups contains a non-abelian free subgroup. We give two natural
conditions, each of which ensures that the colimit of a non-spherical triangle
of groups either contains a non-abelian free subgroup or is virtually solvable.Comment: 45 pages, 21 figures, v2: minor revision (correction of typos, new

College students ethical perceptions on buying counterfeit products
The entire dissertation/thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file (which also appears in the research.pdf); a non-technical general description, or public abstract, appears in the public.pdf file.Title from title screen of research.pdf file (viewed on August 12, 2009)Thesis (M.S.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.This study was designed to investigate the ethical purchasing behavior of college students with regards to purchasing counterfeit merchandise. Students from several different majors were surveyed and compared. TAM majors and non-TAM majors were surveyed to determine if TAM majors who had been sensitized to the issue of counterfeiting would be less likely to purchase counterfeit goods than students from non-TAM majors. T-test results indicated significant differences between buyers of counterfeit goods and non-buyers on eleven of the twelve attitudinal questions asked. Consumers who have previously purchased counterfeit goods hold attitudes more supportive than consumers who have not. These consumers feel that purchasing a counterfeit product is just as good as purchasing the real brand and by doing so they are not hurting the U.S. Economy. These results do support hypothesis one of the research. In testing hypothesis 2, the results indicated that there was not a significant difference between students who had, or had not, discussed counterfeiting in their classes and the purchase of counterfeit goods. There were also no significant differences with respect to TAM verses non-TAM majors. Hypothesis 2 was not supported by the data.Includes bibliographical reference
The Cartesian product of graphs with loops
We extend the definition of the Cartesian product to graphs with loops and
show that the Sabidussi-Vizing unique factorization theorem for connected
finite simple graphs still holds in this context for all connected finite
graphs with at least one unlooped vertex. We also prove that this factorization
can be computed in O(m) time, where m is the number of edges of the given
graph.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Data Governance and Sovereignty in Urban Data Spaces Based on Standardized ICT Reference Architectures
European cities and communities (and beyond) require a structured overview and a set of tools as to achieve a sustainable transformation towards smarter cities/municipalities, thereby leveraging on the enormous potential of the emerging data driven economy. This paper presents the results of a recent study that was conducted with a number of German municipalities/cities. Based on the obtained and briefly presented recommendations emerging from the study, the authors propose the concept of an Urban Data Space (UDS), which facilitates an eco-system for data exchange and added value creation thereby utilizing the various types of data within a smart city/municipality. Looking at an Urban Data Space from within a German context and considering the current situation and developments in German municipalities, this paper proposes a reasonable classification of urban data that allows the relation of various data types to legal aspects, and to conduct solid considerations regarding technical implementation designs and decisions. Furthermore, the Urban Data Space is described/analyzed in detail, and relevant stakeholders are identified, as well as corresponding technical artifacts are introduced. The authors propose to setup Urban Data Spaces based on emerging standards from the area of ICT reference architectures for Smart Cities, such as DIN SPEC 91357 “Open Urban Platform” and EIP SCC. In the course of this, the paper walks the reader through the construction of a UDS based on the above-mentioned architectures and outlines all the goals, recommendations and potentials, which an Urban Data Space can reveal to a municipality/city. Finally, we aim at deriving the proposed concepts in a way that they have the potential to be part of the required set of tools towards the sustainable transformation of German and European cities in the direction of smarter urban environments, based on utilizing the hidden potential of digitalization and efficient interoperable data exchange.EC/H2020/646578/EU/Triangulum: The Three Point Project / Demonstrate. The cultural capitalists: notes on the ongoing reconfiguration of trafficking culture in Asia
Most analysis of the international flows of the illicit art market has described a global situation in which a postcolonial legacy of acquisition and collection exploits cultural heritage by pulling it westwards towards major international trade nodes in the USA and Europe. As the locus of consumptive global economic power shifts, however, these traditional flows are pulled in other directions: notably for the present commentary, towards and within Asia
Observations of V838 Mon in the CO rotational lines
We investigate the structure of a field around the position of V838 Mon as
seen in the lowest CO rotational transitions. We also measure and analyse
emission in the same lines at the position of V838 Mon.Observations have
primarily been done in the CO J = 2-1 and J = 3-2 lines using the KOSMA
telescope. A field of 3.4 squared degrees has been mapped in the on-the-fly
mode in these transitions. Longer integration spectra in the on-off mode have
been obtained to study the emission at the position of V838 Mon. Selected
positions in the field have also been observed in the CO J = 1-0 transition
using the Delingha telescope. In the observed field we have identified many
molecular clouds. They can be divided into two groups from the point of view of
their observed radial velocities. One, having V(LSR) in the range 18-32 km/s,
can be identified with the Perseus Galactic arm. The other one, having V(LSR)
between 44-57 km/s, probably belongs to the Norma-Cygnus arm. The radial
velocity of V838 Mon is within the second range but the object does not seem to
be related to any of the observed clouds. We did not find any molecular buble
of a 1 degree dimension around the position of V838 Mon claimed in van Loon et
al. An emission has been detected at the position of the object in the CO J =
2-1 and J = 3-2 transitions. The emission is very narrow (FWHM ~ 1.2 km/s) and
at V(LSR) = 53.3 km/s. Our analysis of the data suggests that the emission is
probably extended.Comment: paper accepted in A&
High frequency oscillatory ventilation compared with conventional mechanical ventilation in adult respiratory distress syndrome: a randomized controlled trial [ISRCTN24242669]
INTRODUCTION: To compare the safety and efficacy of high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) with conventional mechanical ventilation (CV) for early intervention in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a multi-centre randomized trial in four intensive care units was conducted. METHODS: Patients with ARDS were randomized to receive either HFOV or CV. In both treatment arms a priority was given to maintain lung volume while minimizing peak pressures. CV ventilation strategy was aimed at reducing tidal volumes. In the HFOV group, an open lung strategy was used. Respiratory and circulatory parameters were recorded and clinical outcome was determined at 30 days of follow up. RESULTS: The study was prematurely stopped. Thirty-seven patients received HFOV and 24 patients CV (average APACHE II score 21 and 20, oxygenation index 25 and 18 and duration of mechanical ventilation prior to randomization 2.1 and 1.5 days, respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in survival without supplemental oxygen or on ventilator, mortality, therapy failure, or crossover. Adjustment by a priori defined baseline characteristics showed an odds ratio of 0.80 (95% CI 0.22–2.97) for survival without oxygen or on ventilator, and an odds ratio for mortality of 1.15 (95% CI 0.43–3.10) for HFOV compared with CV. The response of the oxygenation index (OI) to treatment did not differentiate between survival and death. In the HFOV group the OI response was significantly higher than in the CV group between the first and the second day. A post hoc analysis suggested that there was a relatively better treatment effect of HFOV compared with CV in patients with a higher baseline OI. CONCLUSION: No significant differences were observed, but this trial only had power to detect major differences in survival without oxygen or on ventilator. In patients with ARDS and higher baseline OI, however, there might be a treatment benefit of HFOV over CV. More research is needed to establish the efficacy of HFOV in the treatment of ARDS. We suggest that future studies are designed to allow for informative analysis in patients with higher OI
