    Global partnerships in nursing - a qualitative study in lessons for success

    Global nursing partnerships can develop cultural competence and standardisation across international nurse education programmes. Issues of context, cultural awareness and modes of engagement can influence the success of international collaboration. The ā€˜Supporting Internationalisation of Traineeships in the Healthcare Sectorā€™ project, funded from 2017, brought together nine international partners from Finland, Poland, Spain and the UK to develop a pan-European quality audit process for clinical learning environments. As part of the evaluation, eight project partners were interviewed about the project and their criteria for a successful global partnership. The interviews allowed insight into previously hidden aspects of implementation. The importance of a scoping period for nursing global partnerships was highlighted that built on cultural diversity to explore common understandings. Attention to the use of prior expertise in internationalisation, or project objectives, could accelerate a global partnership to achieve a greater potential in its outcomes and cultural sensitivity. Framed in a clear structure, it is possible for global partnerships to embed ownership, autonomy and individual voice in partner organisations. The research concludes that only by growing international champions through funded and well constituted projects, that a genuine impact on the global health and educational needs in nursing can be met

    International learning in undergraduate global nurse education is recognised for promoting essential cultural competence. This can be addressed both at university; through the increasing use of collaborative technology and in practice, where the impact of international placements has promoted cultural sensitivity and outward student mobility. The authors debate the barriers that impede studentsā€™ desire to take up international placements and review initiatives to promote a greater investment in this experience. The complexity and lack of transcultural principles that govern an international placement exchange have been addressed by one initiative to produce a robust pan-European quality audit process for clinical learning environments. In conclusion, the authors call for a greater and evaluated effort to increase global understanding and learning in the context of the COVID-19 response

    Restoration of eucalypt grassy woodland: effects of experimental interventions on ground-layer vegetation

    We report on the effects of broad-scale restoration treatments on the ground layer of eucalypt grassy woodland in south-eastern Australia. The experiment was conducted in two conservation reserves from which livestock grazing had previously been removed. Changes in biomass, species diversity, ground-cover attributes and life-form were analysed over a 4-year period in relation to the following experimental interventions: (1) reduced kangaroo density, (2) addition of coarse woody debris and (3) fire (a single burn). Reducing kangaroo density doubled total biomass in one reserve, but no effects on exotic biomass, species counts or ground cover attributes were observed. Coarse woody debris also promoted biomass, particularly exotic annual forbs, as well as plant diversity in one of the reserves. The single burn reduced biomass, but changed little else. Overall, we found the main driver of change to be the favourable growth seasons that had followed a period of drought. This resulted in biomass increasing by 67%, (mostly owing to the growth of perennial native grasses), whereas overall native species counts increased by 18%, and exotic species declined by 20% over the 4-year observation period. Strategic management of grazing pressure, use of fire where biomass has accumulated and placement of coarse woody debris in areas of persistent erosion will contribute to improvements in soil and vegetation condition, and gains in biodiversity, in the future.Funding and in-kind logistic support for this project was provided by the ACT Government as part of an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (LP0561817; LP110100126).     Empowering bioscience students to develop employability skills through volunteering ā€“ voices of experience

    Gaining employment is a priority for the majority of students (CBI 2009) particularly with the downturn in the economy and saturated job markets for both graduates and experienced workers, candidates have to find new ways to distinguish themselves to potential employers. The change in employer focus from good degrees to good degrees plus additional, softer skills and attributes, means that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are having to review their provision to students. Many HEIs have a diverse range of students from both the UK and overseas, all with varying needs and looking for careers in a range of sectors. With each career sector having its own individual expectations and requirements, developing a flexible yet structured approach to employability is pivotal to sustained success for all HEIs. With students recognising the competition in the workplace the desire to develop skills and gain practical experience is increasing. With limited placement positions this paper considers volunteering as a recognised as way to help to develop practical work experience and gain a step on the career ladder

    Universes for Race Safety

    Race conditions occur when two incorrectly synchronised threads simultaneously access the same object. Static type systems have been suggested to prevent them. Typically, they use annotations to determine the relationship between an object and its ā€œguard ā€ (another object), and to guarantee that the guard has been locked before the object is accessed. The object-guard relationship thus forms a tree similar to an ownership type hierarchy. Universe types are a simple form of ownership types. We explore the use of universe types for static identification of race conditions. We use a small, Java-like language with universe types and concurrency primitives. We give a type system that enforces synchronisation for all object accesses, and prove that race conditions cannot occur during execution of a type correct program. We support references to objects whose ownership domain is unknown. Unlike previous work, we do so without compromising the synchronisation strategy used where the ownership domain of such objects is fully known. We develop a novel technique for dealing with non-final (i.e. mutable) paths to objects of unknown ownership domain using effects

    With the introduction of multi-core CPUs, multi-threaded programming is becoming significantly more popular. Unfortunately, it is difficult for programmers to ensure their code is correct because current languages are too low-level. Atomic sections are a recent language primitive that expose a higher level interface to programmers. Thus they make concurrent programming more straightforward. Atomic sections can be compiled using transactional memory or lock inference, but ensuring correctness and good performance is a challenge. Transactional memory has problems with IO and contention, whereas lock inference algorithms are often too imprecise which translates to a loss of parallelism at runtime. We define a lock inference algorithm that has good precision. We give the operational semantics of a model OO language, and define a notion of correctness for our algorithm. We then prove correctness using Isabelle/HOL

    Clinical and economic benefits of irinotecan in combination with 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid as first line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer

    The combination of irinotecan plus 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid has clinical and survival benefits over 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid alone in the setting of first line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. The aim of this cost-effectiveness analysis was to compare the economic implications, from a UK health commissioner perspective, of the two treatment arms (de Gramont regimen) in this setting. Resource utilisation data collected prospectively during the study were used as a basis for estimating cumulative drug dosage, chemotherapy admistration, and treatment of complications during first line therapy. Resource utilisation associated with further chemotherapy in patients who had progressed during the study was derived from a retrospective case note review. Drug acquisition costs were derived from the British National Formulary (September, 2001) and unit costs for clinical consultation and services were taken from the latest relevant cost database. Cumulative costs per patient associated with further chemotherapy were lower in the irinotecan plus 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid treatment arm. Based on incremental costs per life-year gained of Ā£14ā€Š794, the combination of irinotecan plus 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid can be considered cost-effective by commonly accepted criteria compared with 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid alone. Thus, clinical and economic data demonstrate that irinotecan, either in combination with irinotecan plus 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid in the first line setting or as monotherapy in the second line setting, has a major role in the management of metastatic colorectal cancer

    An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 2: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 1: Summary of technical approach, results and conclusions

    A detailed investigation of the flight buffeting response of the F-111A was performed in two phases. In Phase 1 stochastic analysis techniques were applied to wing and fuselage responses for maneuvers flown at subsonic speeds and wing leading edge sweep of 26 degrees. Power spectra and rms values were obtained. This report gives results of Phase 2 where the analyses were extended to include maneuvers flown at wing leading edge sweep values of 50 and 75.5 degrees at subsonic and supersonic speeds and the responses examined were expanded to include vertical shear, bending moment, and hingeline torque of the left and right horizontal tails. Power spectra, response time histories, variations of rms response with angle of attack and effects of wing sweep and Mach number are presented and discussed. Some Phase 1 results are given for comparison purposes
