    Site effect estimation through site characterization from ambient noise recordings,

    Site effect assessment is an important step in seismic risk mitigation. There is therefore a drastic need for co proxies to site effects estimates. In that context, a new promising approach was proposed, using the time-avera over the top z meters with z varying form 5, 10, 20 and 30 meters (Vsz) and the fundamental resonance frequen two-parameters characterization of a site. Then to assess site effect, a Site Amplification Prediction Equat completely defined by these two parameters was build-up based on Japanese data from the KiK-Net network. Thu to be validated using other dataset. For that aim the EUROSEIS-test data is a suitable one. The EUROSE sedimentary basin in northern-Greece that has been thoroughly investigated through grants from the European C mainly to study site effects. Fourteen accelerometric stations have been installed since 1995, that to date recorded 100 events. After a review of the main available information over the EUROSEIS-test, we end up with a poor Vs for some of the accelerometric stations. Thus eight accelerometric stations were selected for noise array me surveys to provide more details information about Vsz and f0 parameters. The noise array technique has been pro decades ago but its development is still in progress, particularly regarding the inversion step. Different approaches el al. 2009, Renalier et al. 2009) were tested in this study to provide Vsz. These two inversion strategies provide Vsz for z equals to 10, 20 and 30 meters. With the resulting Vsz and f0 from noise analysis, a validation-test of th SAPE was realized. The results of such a comparison are encouraging and indicate as well limitations of the SAP It is a promising tool for engineering and seismic risk management

    Improving sleep quality in cancer patients. a literature review on non-pharmacologic interventions

    Objective: Disrupted sleep-in cancer patients is due to several factors. Pre-existing sleep disorders, mental status in cancer, or side effects of cancer treatment are all potential predictors of sleep disturbances in this vulnerable population. This review aims to evaluate and synthesise non-pharmaco-logic interventions for improving sleep quality and the associated benefits in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A literature review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Google Scholar, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Embase databases were interrogated, selected the article with cancer, neoplasm, oncology, sleep-wake disorders, sleep disturbance, sleep problem, strategies, treat-ment, and intervention such as keywords. No time and geographic restrictions but paediatrics, children, and interventions unrelated to sleep improvement in cancer were excluded. Results: Overall, twenty-nine articles were included in the review after selection. The included studies analysed different types of cancer, like breast, lung, and prostate cancer and acute leukaemia. Most of the data gathered from the relevant research suggest that nonpharmacologic interventions significantly improved cancer patients’ sleep quality. Conclusions: Cancer survival rates are increasing; researchers and healthcare professionals should aim not just at survival but also to allow cancer patients just comfortably to live, considering the best quality of life possible. Nurses have a crucial role in the care of this patient population. Nursing implies an intimate relationship with patients and educating the patient to improve their mental and physical condition through non-pharmacological approaches, which should be considered a specific competence

    center dot The bioactive properties of olive (Olea europaea) fruits and olive oil are largely attributed to terpenoid compounds, including diverse triterpenoids such as oleanolic, maslinic and ursolic acids, erythrodiol, and uvaol. They have applications in the agri-food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Some key steps involved in the biosynthesis of these compounds are still unknown.center dot Genome mining, biochemical analysis, and trait association studies have been used to identify major gene candidates controlling triterpenoid content of olive fruits.center dot Here, we identify and functionally characterize an oxidosqualene cyclase (OeBAS) required for the production of the major triterpene scaffold beta-amyrin, the precursor of erythrodiol, oleanolic and maslinic acids, and a cytochrome P450 (CYP716C67) that mediates 2 alpha oxidation of the oleanane- and ursane-type triterpene scaffolds to produce maslinic and corosolic acids, respectively. To confirm the enzymatic functions of the entire pathway, we have reconstituted the olive biosynthetic pathway for oleanane- and ursane-type triterpenoids in the heterologous host, Nicotiana benthamiana. Finally, we have identified genetic markers associated with oleanolic and maslinic acid fruit content on the chromosomes carrying the OeBAS and CYP716C67 genes.center dot Our results shed light on the biosynthesis of olive triterpenoids and provide new gene targets for germplasm screening and breeding for high triterpenoid content

    Genetic Mapping of the Incompatibility Locus in Olive and Development of a Linked Sequence-Tagged Site Marker

    The genetic control of self-incompatibility (SI) has been recently disclosed in olive. Inter-varietal crossing confirmed the presence of only two incompatibility groups (G1 and G2), suggesting a simple Mendelian inheritance of the trait. A double digest restriction associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing of a biparental population segregating for incompatibility groups has been performed and high-density linkage maps were constructed in order to map the SI locus and identify gene candidates and linked markers. The progeny consisted of a full-sib family of 229 individuals derived from the cross \u2018Leccino\u2019 (G1) 7 \u2018Dolce Agogia\u2019 (G2) varieties, segregating 1:1 (G1:G2), in accordance with a diallelic self-incompatibility (DSI) model. A total of 16,743 single nucleotide polymorphisms was identified, 7,006 in the female parent \u2018Leccino\u2019 and 9,737 in the male parent \u2018Dolce Agogia.\u2019 Each parental map consisted of 23 linkage groups and showed an unusual large size (5,680 cM in \u2018Leccino\u2019 and 3,538 cM in \u2018Dolce Agogia\u2019). Recombination was decreased across all linkage groups in pollen mother cells of \u2018Dolce Agogia,\u2019 the parent with higher heterozygosity, compared to megaspore mother cells of \u2018Leccino,\u2019 in a context of a species that showed exceptionally high recombination rates. A subset of 109 adult plants was assigned to either incompatibility group by a stigma test and the diallelic self-incompatibility (DSI) locus was mapped to an interval of 5.4 cM on linkage group 18. This region spanned a size of approximately 300 Kb in the olive genome assembly. We developed a sequence-tagged site marker in the DSI locus and identified five haplotypes in 57 cultivars with known incompatibility group assignment. A combination of two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was sufficient to predict G1 or G2 phenotypes in olive cultivars, enabling early marker-assisted selection of compatible genotypes and allowing for a rapid screening of inter-compatibility among cultivars in order to guarantee effective fertilization and increase olive production. The construction of high-density linkage maps has led to the development of the first functional marker in olive and provided positional candidate genes in the SI locus

    Multi-GeV Electron Spectrometer

    The advance in laser plasma acceleration techniques pushes the regime of the resulting accelerated particles to higher energies and intensities. In particular the upcoming experiments with the FLAME laser at LNF will enter the GeV regime with almost 1pC of electrons. From the current status of understanding of the acceleration mechanism, relatively large angular and energy spreads are expected. There is therefore the need to develop a device capable to measure the energy of electrons over three orders of magnitude (few MeV to few GeV) under still unknown angular divergences. Within the PlasmonX experiment at LNF a spectrometer is being constructed to perform these measurements. It is made of an electro-magnet and a screen made of scintillating fibers for the measurement of the trajectories of the particles. The large range of operation, the huge number of particles and the need to focus the divergence present unprecedented challenges in the design and construction of such a device. We will present the design considerations for this spectrometer and the first results from a prototype.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to NIM

    Empirical evaluation of microtremor H/V spectral ratio

    The objective of this work is to perform a purely empirical assessment of the actual capabilities of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio technique to provide reliable and relevant information concerning site conditions and/or site amplification. This objective has been tackled through the homogeneous (re)processing of a large volume of earthquakes and ambient noise data recorded by different research teams in more than 200 sites located mainly in Europe, but also in the Caribbean and in Tehran. The original recordings were first gathered in a specific database with information on both the sites and recorded events. Then, for all sites close to an instrumented reference, average site-to-reference spectral ratios (“spectral ratio method” (SSR)) were derived in a homogeneous way (window selection, smoothing, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, averaging), as well as H/V ratios (“HVSRE–RF”) on earthquake recordings. H/V ratios were also obtained from noise recordings at each site (either specific measurements, or extracted from pre- or post-event noise windows). The spectral curves resulting from these three techniques were estimated reliable for a subset of 104 sites, and were thus compared in terms of fundamental frequency, amplitude and amplification bandwidth, exhibiting agreements and disagreements, for which interpretations are looked for in relation with characteristics of site conditions. The first important result consists in the very good agreement between fundamental frequencies obtained with either technique, observed for 81% of the analyzed sites. A significant part of the disagreements correspond to thick, low frequency, continental sites where natural noise level is often very low and H/V noise ratios do not exhibit any clear peak. The second important result is the absence of correlation between H/V peak amplitude and the actual site amplification measured on site-to-reference spectral ratios. There are, however, two statistically significant results about the amplitude of the H/V curve: the peak amplitude may be considered as a lower bound estimate of the actual amplification indicated by SSR (it is smaller for 79% of the 104 investigated sites), and, from another point of view, the difference in amplitude exhibits a questioning correlation with the geometrical characteristics of the sediment/basement interface: large SSR/HV differences might thus help to detect the existence of significant 2D or 3D effects.Published75-1084.1.     The Astronomical Orientation of Ancient Greek Temples

    Despite its appearing to be a simple question to answer, there has been no consensus as to whether or not the alignments of ancient Greek temples reflect astronomical intentions. Here I present the results of a survey of archaic and classical Greek temples in Sicily and compare them with temples in Greece. Using a binomial test I show strong evidence that there is a preference for solar orientations. I then speculate that differences in alignment patterns between Sicily and Greece reflect differing pressures in the expression of ethnic identity
