ABSTRACT Sandy Symbionts: How Tree Identity Shapes Ectomycorrhizal Fungus in Sand Pine The purpose of my thesis was to investigate the structure and composition of the ectomycorrhizal (EMC) fungal communities of sand pine (Pinus clausa var. immuginata). Root tips were sampled from four trees located within Eglin Air Force Base. Colonization was shown to differ significantly based on tree identity. Abundance, species diversity, and the ratio of ECM fungi to pathogenic fungi did not differ significantly based on tree identity. A total of 35 ECM operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were shown to colonize the four trees. Helotiales4, Lactarius2, and Cenococcum geophilum were found to be the most abundant OTUs, while Lactarius1 was found to be the least abundant. The results of my research suggest that difference in the ECM communities of sand pine is determined by variation in ECM fungal activity at the microscale of individual trees

Horizontally opposed trunnion forward engine mount system supported beneath a wing pylon

    Get PDF
The present invention relates to an engine mount assembly for supporting an aircraft engine in aft-cantilevered position beneath the aircraft wing. The assembly includes a pair forward engine mounts positioned on opposite sides of an integrally formed yoke member wrapped about the upper half of the engine casing. Each side of the yoke is preferably configured as an A-shaped frame member with the bottom portions joining each other and the pylon. To prevent backbone bending of the engine trunnion assembly, the forward engine mounts supported at opposite ends of the yoke engage the casing along its centerline. The trunnion assembly is preferably constructed of high strength titanium machined and/or forged

Iodine, a Factor in Feeding Young Growing Swine

    Get PDF
Iodine is now generally believed to be absolutely essential for the proper growth and development of the mammalian organism, and its use in animal feeding is becoming more and more general, particularly in goitrous regions

Supplemental Specialty Feeds for Making 225 Pound Pigs on Pasture

The results of pig feeding tests, conducted in 1920–21 with specialty or commercial feeds by the Animal Husbandry Section of the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station, have been so grossly and persistently misrepresented by one company in particular that this circular Is Is· sued to present the complete figures. The misrepresentation con· slated In using only a part of the experimental figures, thus giving an Incorrect interpretation of the data secured in the test

Studies in iodine feeding, Part I—potassium iodide feeding beneficial to young swine

    Get PDF
\u27l\u27he feeding of iodine in the form of potassium iodide to young growing swine in dry lot and on rape pasture resulted, in three separate experiments, conducted in three different years, in increasing tile average \u27 daily gain approximately 10 percent, and likewise in decreasing the feed required for one hundred pounds of gain 10 percent. The pigs receiving potassium iodide made greater dimensional growth in height, in length, and in leg circumference

    Experimental Microfluidic System

The ultimate goal of this project is to integrate microfluidic devices with NASA's space bioreactor systems. In such a system, the microfluidic device would provide realtime feedback control of the bioreactor by monitoring pH, glucose, and lactate levels in the cell media; and would provide an analytical capability to the bioreactor in exterrestrial environments for monitoring bioengineered cell products and health changes in cells due to environmental stressors. Such integrated systems could be used as biosentinels both in space and on planet surfaces. The objective is to demonstrate the ability of microfabricated devices to repeatedly and reproducibly perform bead cytometry experiments in micro, lunar, martian, and hypergravity (1.8g)

Corn substitutes for fattening lambs—Parts I and II

Shelled corn is a superior basal grain for fattening lambs in dry lot, in the cornbelt and under the conditions of the experiments reported in this bulletin. This fact stands out clearly in the results of the two years’ work at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station in the winters of 1918-19 and 1919-20. Shelled corn proved to be more efficient than either oats or barley when fed alone, this being the case when all factors, such as feed required per hundred pounds gain, feed costs, cost of shipping and margin of profit or loss per lamb, are considered

Soybean and alfalfa hays for wintering pregnant ewes

    Get PDF
Since the soybean acreage has increased in Iowa and the Corn Belt, the determination of the economic feeding value of this plant deserves attention. Alfalfa and clover have long been considered good legume hays for sheep. Because of the increase in soybean production, which involves a greater volume of soybean hay, the question naturally arises as to how this legume hay compares in feeding value with clover and alfalfa. With this question in mind four lots of pregnant ewes were experimentally fed on soybean and alfalfa hays and certain combinations of these two hays. The results secured are reported herein
