    More Market-Oriented Than the United States and More Socialist Than China: A Comparative Public Property Story of Singapore

    Compared to the more illustrious conceptualization of private property, the conceptualization of public property remains at a surprisingly infantile stage. The very definition of public property is ambiguous. This article utilizes a comparative case study of traffic congestion policies in the United States, China, and Singapore to highlight the conceptual pitfalls posed by the current confusion on public property. This article proposes a refined public property framework that offers greater conceptual clarity on the real issues at stake. In particular, this article argues that “property” in public property should include regulatory permits while “public” in public property should not be distracted by the requirement of public access. The allocation considerations of efficiency and fairness governing conventional public property are equally applicable to economically valuable regulatory permits. Similarly, public access is a mere form of allocation that should be changed upon alterations in use pattern arising from technological advancement and socioeconomic changes

    This study investigates the effectiveness of Tai Chi on the stability of the elderly during stair descents under illumination of 3 lx and 300 lx. A total of 30 healthy elderly who are aged between 65 and 70 years old are recruited as subjects. Two force plates and eight Vicon cameras were used to collect data. The results indicated that Tai Chi exercise may increase the lower limb strength of the elderly, the stair descent strategies was influenced by Intensity of illumination, it may increase the risk of fall during stair descent under lower Intensity of illumination

    A Meta-analysis of Major Complications between Traditional Pacemakers and Leadless Pacemakers

    Objectives: We aim to compare the major complications between leadless pacemakers and traditional pacemakers. Background: Leadless pacemakers, which are increasingly used in clinical practice, have several advantages compared with traditional pacemakers in avoiding pocket- and lead-related complications. However, the clinical effect of leadless pacemakers remains controversial. Methods: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the CNKI database, and the Wanfang database were searched from July 2013 to December 2019. Studies comparing leadless pacemakers and traditional pacemakers were included. The primary end point was major complications. The secondary end points were cardiac perforation/pericardial effusion, device revision or extraction, loss of device function, and death. Results: Six studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Only four of the six studies reported data on major complications. Leadless pacemakers were associated with a lower incidence of major complications (risk ratio 0.33, 95% confidence interval 0.25–0.44, P<0.00001, I 2 =49%). We extracted data on cardiac perforation/pericardial effusion, device revision or extraction, loss of device function, and death from six studies. Our meta-analysis showed that leadless pacemakers have a higher risk of cardiac perforation or pericardial effusion (risk ratio 4.28, 95% confidence interval 1.66–11.08, P=0.003, I 2 =0%). No statistically significant differences were found for mortality, device revision or extraction, and loss of device function. Conclusion: Compared with traditional pacemakers, leadless pacemakers have a significantly decreased risk of major complications, but have a higher risk of cardiac perforation or pericardial effusion

    High-Performance Screen-Printed Thermoelectric Films on Fabrics.

    Printing techniques could offer a scalable approach to fabricate thermoelectric (TE) devices on flexible substrates for power generation used in wearable devices and personalized thermo-regulation. However, typical printing processes need a large concentration of binder additives, which often render a detrimental effect on electrical transport of the printed TE layers. Here, we report scalable screen-printing of TE layers on flexible fiber glass fabrics, by rationally optimizing the printing inks consisting of TE particles (p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 or n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3), binders, and organic solvents. We identified a suitable binder additive, methyl cellulose, which offers suitable viscosity for printability at a very small concentration (0.45-0.60 wt.%), thus minimizing its negative impact on electrical transport. Following printing, the binders were subsequently burnt off via sintering and hot pressing. We found that the nanoscale defects left behind after the binder burnt off became effective phonon scattering centers, leading to low lattice thermal conductivity in the printed n-type material. With the high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity, the screen-printed TE layers showed high room-temperature ZT values of 0.65 and 0.81 for p-type and n-type, respectively

    DeepSF: deep convolutional neural network for mapping protein sequences to folds

    Motivation Protein fold recognition is an important problem in structural bioinformatics. Almost all traditional fold recognition methods use sequence (homology) comparison to indirectly predict the fold of a tar get protein based on the fold of a template protein with known structure, which cannot explain the relationship between sequence and fold. Only a few methods had been developed to classify protein sequences into a small number of folds due to methodological limitations, which are not generally useful in practice. Results We develop a deep 1D-convolution neural network (DeepSF) to directly classify any protein se quence into one of 1195 known folds, which is useful for both fold recognition and the study of se quence-structure relationship. Different from traditional sequence alignment (comparison) based methods, our method automatically extracts fold-related features from a protein sequence of any length and map it to the fold space. We train and test our method on the datasets curated from SCOP1.75, yielding a classification accuracy of 80.4%. On the independent testing dataset curated from SCOP2.06, the classification accuracy is 77.0%. We compare our method with a top profile profile alignment method - HHSearch on hard template-based and template-free modeling targets of CASP9-12 in terms of fold recognition accuracy. The accuracy of our method is 14.5%-29.1% higher than HHSearch on template-free modeling targets and 4.5%-16.7% higher on hard template-based modeling targets for top 1, 5, and 10 predicted folds. The hidden features extracted from sequence by our method is robust against sequence mutation, insertion, deletion and truncation, and can be used for other protein pattern recognition problems such as protein clustering, comparison and ranking.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure

    Effects of nitrogen application on phytochemical component levels and anticancer and antioxidant activities of Allium fistulosum

    Background Allium fistulosum L. has good nutritional value and is cultivated worldwide as an efficacious traditional medicinal plant. Its biological activities are attributable to its phytochemicals. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development; however, the effect of nitrogen levels on the level of active components in this species is not well understood. Methods In this study, using urea fertilizer, we investigated the effects of different nitrogen levels (N0, N1, and N2 at 0, 130, and 260 kg/ha, respectively) on the phytochemical constituents , and antioxidant and anticancer properties of A. fistulosum. Results The results suggested that nitrogen fertilizers have a significant effect on the level of total phenols and flavonoids. The analysis of the antioxidant capacity revealed that the lowest IC50 values corresponded to plants treated with the highest nitrogen concentration. Anticancer activity was investigated against cancer cell lines (HeLa and HepG2), and the extracts of A. fistulosum treated with a high nitrogen level showed the highest antiproliferative effect. Collectively, our results suggest that nitrogen fertilizer application enhanced the quality of A. fistulosum, particularly its health benefits
