Covalently immobilized, silica gel or resin-supported C-protected cysteine or cystine Fe and Ni complexes - synthesis and structural characterization with FT-IR spectroscopy
In this work the syntheses of covalently grafted C-protected Fe(III)− or Ni(II)−L-cysteine and Fe(III)− or Ni(II)−L-cystine complexes onto a surface-modified silica gel or Merrifield’s resin are described. Conditions of the syntheses were varied and the obtained structures were studied by classical analytical (titration) as well as spectroscopic (infrared, atomic absorption) methods. It was found that the sulphur atoms in the molecules acted as primary coordination sites, while the other coordinating groups varied depending on whether the complexes were formed under ligand-poor or ligand-excess conditions
Two Approaches to Solving the Inversion Problem for Eddy Current NDE
The eddy current NDE inversion problem is to determine flaw parameters from eddy current sensor impedance changes. Two approaches to solving this problem are discussed for geometries with two components of eddy current. The first is to use the Finite Element Method of numerical analysis to compute the sensor impedance change for each flaw parameter value. The second approach is to combine the Finite Element Method with an analytical scattering technique. These two approaches are applied to the problem of an infinitely long coil surrounding an infinitely long conducting bar with an infinitely long surface crack. The calculated impedance changes show good agreement with known analytical and experimental results
Parameter estimation of the kinetic α-Pinene isomerization model using the MCSfilter algorithm
This paper aims to illustrate the application of a derivative-free multistart algorithm with coordinate search filter, designated as the MCSFilter algorithm. The problem used in this study is the parameter estimation problem of the kinetic α -pinene isomerization model. This is a well known nonlinear optimization problem (NLP) that has been investigated as a case study for performance testing of most derivative based methods proposed in the literature. Since the MCSFilter algorithm features a stochastic component, it was run ten times to solve the NLP problem. The optimization problem was successfully solved in all the runs and the optimal solution demonstrates that the MCSFilter provides a good quality solution.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Some discussions on functionalist housing and its economics in Romania by Lhe late 1950s and early 1960s
This paper proposes an analysis of the Romanian architectural practices in the late 1950's and early 1960's by considering the availability of financial resources. I premise that echoes of Moscow's approaches to the built environment overlapped the Bucharest politicians' priorities, whose lack of constancy in economic decision-making exacerbated itself as the urban construction programs advanced. From the Romanian authorities' point of view, therefore, raising the mass housing profitability could save important financial resources for other investments in heavy industry, while maintaining the appearance of a social state. Similarities between Soviet and Romanian modernist building projects suggested a coherent approach to housing throughout the bloc. However, this article will show that functionalist architectural modernism -cheap and fast to erect- also proved beneficial for Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej's economic plans, which questions urban construction projects' political agendas and the professional tensions between architects and economists. Therefore, investigating the functionalist architecture opens up several lines of inquiry: to what extent Nikita Khrushchev's housing program was transferred in Romania; the tortuous policies of the Romanian state's leadership in the field of housing as well as how local bureaucratic or professional actors appropriated, interpreted and adjusted such programs; and, the economic costs of the new functionalist approach to urban dwelling. In this way, this article reads the making of functionalist mass housing programs by the late 1950s to assess the Soviets' part in building the Romanian cities. To this end, the article contributes to the recent scholarly literature on multiple modernities
