    This study examines the major works of Judith Sargent Murray, Hannah Webster Foster, and Susanna Haswell Rowson, three major writers of the 1790s whose writing responds to the ideologies of the early American Republic. I suggest that Murray, Foster, and Rowson write conduct fiction which responds to the changing attitudes toward women and education after the American Revolution. Using fiction, these authors comment on the republican woman, the need for women’s education, and the necessity for women to gather in communities for support. Despite the prevailing notion that reading too many novels would corrupt young women, Judith Sargent Murray’s novella, The Story of Margaretta (1786), Hannah Webster Foster’s novels, The Coquette (1797) and The Boarding School (1798), and Susanna Rowson’s novels, Charlotte Temple (1794) and Reuben and Rachel; or, Tales of Old Times (1798), were some of the most popular books in the late eighteenth century. If these novels were not meant to be read by young women, who were the authors’ primary audience, why were they so popular?     Too often research on Black boys emanate from deficit orientations and take a problem centered approach which overemphasizes stereotypes or pathologizes Black male students, overlooking their aspirations and successes. Utilizing the High School Longitudinal Survey of 2009 (HSLS: 09), we examine the postsecondary goals of Black male ninth graders as well as the relationships among their educational aspirations, college knowledge, and supportive school personnel using Community Cultural Wealth as the conceptual framework. We found that the educational aspirations of Black male ninth graders are high; however, their knowledge of college falls short of their educational aspirations and their relationships with teachers and school counselors. We discuss the strengths, attributes, and systems of support that are useful to rural Black male students as they transition through secondary education to post-secondary settings and call for a paradigmatic shift using family-school-community partnerships based on the finding

    A thematic analysis of the prevention of future deaths reports in healthcare from HM coroners in England and Wales 2016–2019

    Background The Coroners and Justice Act allows coroners in England or Wales to issue reports after inquest, if they believe that action should be taken to prevent a future death. Coroners are under a statutory duty to issue a Prevention of Future Death (PFD) report to persons or organisations that they believe have the power to act. Cumulatively, these reports may contain useful intelligence for patient safety. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of extracting data from these reports and to evaluate if learning was possible from any common themes. Methods Reports were extracted from 2016 to 2019 for deaths in hospitals, care homes and the community in England and Wales. These were subjected to descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of coroner’s concerns. Application of data mining techniques was not possible due to data quality. Results 710 reports were examined, with 3469 concerns being raised (mean 4.88, range 1–33). 36 reports expressed concern about having to issue repeat PFDs to the same organisation for the same or similar concerns. Thematic analysis reliability was high ( κ 0.89 unweighted) with five emerging primary themes: deficit in skill or knowledge, missed, delayed or uncoordinated care, communication and cultural issues, systems issues and lack of resources. A codebook of 53 subthemes were identified. Conclusions PFD reports offer valuable insight. Aggregation and continued analysis of these reports could offer more informed patient safety, workforce development and organisational policy. Improved data quality would allow for possible automation of analysis and faster feedback into practice

    Science is a collaborative endeavor, where most of the significantly influential advances are achieved by groups of scientists working together across varying institutions and disciplines. To reflect this, we should offer opportunities for our students to learn, research, and communicate with their peers. In this workshop, we share models that we have found successful for designing opportunities, as well as ideas for topics that promote real world application and cross disciplinary work for students, drawing from our experiences with the International Student Science Fair and other international strategies. We will help interested teachers in developing their own working groups to take ideas and plans back to their own institutions

    AN INTERPRETATIVE PHENOMENOLOGICAL ANALYSIS ON THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY AMONG ABANDONED YOUNG ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITY

    Most people who live with physical disability belong to the poorest and marginalized. In familial context, being a young adult with physical disability sets extra demand towards the family because it causes exhaustion due to the additional care, attention and maintenance for medication. As a response to this, families seek the help of institutions with the belief that the individual with physical disability could get necessary help through them. It was due to those that the possibility of abandonment increases. The study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the concept of family among abandoned young adults with physical disability as a response to the aforementioned issues. Derived from these were the objectives of this study:[1] To know their view towards each member of the family and [2] to know how the abandonment affected their concept of family.  Participants include 3 abandoned young adults with apparent physical disabilities (e.g. cerebral palsy, kyphosis and hip dysplasia) which are all from the province of Cavite, Philippines. Interview and drawing were the methods used to elicit responses. Results show that before abandonment, 1 superordinate theme emerged: primary family as an attachment unit; and for after abandonment, another superordinate theme emerged: Alternate family as a unit of healing and recovery. These were supported by local and international research and theories regarding topics that tackle the importance of the alternate family and the faith and values accumulated as ways to reconstruct the self, as well as the young adults’ aspirations to be reunited with their family amidst abandonment

    Students’ Experience of Family Counseling Role-Play with Developmental Considerations

    A need exists to explore student experiences with pedagogical approaches, particularly those commonly used in counselor education such as role-play. Nine counselors-in-training (CITs) who participated in a semester-long family counseling role-play shared their experiences with the pedagogical approach. Through semi-structured interview protocol, we explored CITs’ lived experience and meaning-making with the learning strategy. Existing literature denotes that cognitive complexity influences how CITs make sense of their experiences. As such, cognitive complexity scores, rooted in Perry’s intellectual development model, are provided for each participant. Data were analyzed using transcendental phenomenology, which resulted in three superordinate themes: impact of class structure, increased confidence, and gained meta-awareness. Findings suggest the value of role-play as a pedagogical strategy for counselors-in-training of various cognitive developmental levels
