    Gravity localization on hybrid branes

    Get PDF
This work deals with gravity localization on codimension-1 brane worlds engendered by compacton-like kinks, the so-called hybrid branes. In such scenarios, the thin brane behaviour is manifested when the extra dimension is outside the compact domain, where the energy density is non-trivial, instead of asymptotically as in the usual thick brane models. The zero mode is trapped in the brane, as required. The massive modes, although are not localized in the brane, have important phenomenological implications such as corrections to the Newton's law. We study such corrections in the usual thick domain wall and in the hybrid brane scenarios. By means of suitable numerical methods, we attain the mass spectrum for the graviton and the corresponding wavefunctions. The spectra possess the usual linearly increasing behaviour from the Kaluza-Klein theories. Further, we show that the 4D gravitational force is slightly increased at short distances. The first eigenstate contributes highly for the correction to the Newton's law. The subsequent normalized solutions have diminishing contributions. Moreover, we find out that the phenomenology of the hybrid brane is not different from the usual thick domain wall. The use of numerical techniques for solving the equations of the massive modes is useful for matching possible phenomenological measurements in the gravitational law as a probe to warped extra dimensions.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure

Stern-Gerlach Entanglement in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Entanglement of spin and position variables produced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields of Stern-Gerlach type acting on spinor Bose-Einstein condensates may lead to interference effects at the level of one-boson densities. A model is worked out for these effects which is amenable to analytical calculation for gaussian shaped condensates. The resulting interference effects are sensitive to the spin polarization properties of the condensate.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

Fertilizer policy in the developing countries: the case of Brazil

    Get PDF
This paper deals initially with the role of mineral fertilizers in increasing agricultural production: the relationship between the two variables is illustrated within global, regional national and local contexts. The pattern and trends in fertilizer usage in Brazil are presented next, namely: increase in consumption in the period 1950/72; regional distribution; consumption as related to crops and cultivated land. It is shown that in less than a quarter or century fertilizer use has increased in the country nearly 12 fold, whereas world consumption was raised 7 fold, thus exceeding estimates based in several criteria. Steps taken to secure the raise in fertilizer consumption above the historical trend are discussed: research experience for outlining fertilization recomendations; the transfer of the knowledge to the farmer by the extension work both official and private; the credit policy and special incentives for the purchase of fertilizer; the national policy for minumum proces of agricultural products; the implantation of a national fertilizer industry. It is considered that the Brazilian experience adapted to similar local conditions in other developing countries, presents a possibility for achieving beneficial results without inflationary reflexes in the economy.o trabalho discute a importância dos adubos minerais na elevação dos rendimentos agrícolas.

Near infrared and optical morphology of the dusty galaxy NGC972

Near infrared (NIR) and optical surface photometric analyses of the dusty galaxy NGC972 are presented. The photometric profiles in the BVRJHK bands can be fitted with a combination of gaussian and exponential profiles, corresponding to a starburst nucleus and a stellar disk respectively. The exponential scale length in the B-band is 2.8 times larger than in the K-band, which implies a central B-band optical depth as high as 11. A bulge is absent even in the NIR bands and hence the galaxy must be of a morphological type later than the usually adopted Sb type. Relatively low rotational velocity and high gas content also favor a later type, probably Sd, for the galaxy. Only one arm can be traced in the distribution of old stars; the second arm, however, can be traced in the distribution of dust and HII regions. Data suggest a short NIR bar, which ends inside the nuclear ring. The slowly rising nature of the rotation curve rules out a resonance origin of the the nuclear ring. The ring is most likely not in the plane of the galaxy, given its circular appearance in spite of the moderately high inclination of the galaxy. The off-planar nature of the star forming ring, the unusually high fraction (30%) of the total mass in molecular form, the presence of a nuclear starburst and the asymmetry of spiral arms, are probably the result of a merger with a gas-rich companion galaxy.Comment: Uses aas2pp4.sty and epsfig.sty, 12 pages To appear in Astronomical Journal, October 199
