Simulation in Quality Management – An Approach to Improve Inspection Planning

    Get PDF
Production is a multi-step process involving many different articles produced in different jobs by various machining stations. Quality inspection has to be integrated in the production sequence in order to ensure the conformance of the products. The interactions between manufacturing processes and inspections are very complex since three aspects (quality, cost, and time) should all be considered at the same time while determining the suitable inspection strategy. Therefore, a simulation approach was introduced to solve this problem. The simulator called QUINTE [the QUINTE simulator has been developed at the University of Dortmund in the course of two research projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (BMWA: Bundesministerium fĂŒr Wirtschaft und Arbeit), the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen (AiF), Cologne/Germany and the Forschungsgemeinschaft QualitĂ€t, Frankfurt a.M./Germany] was developed to simulate the machining as well as the inspection. It can be used to investigate and evaluate the inspection strategies in manufacturing processes. The investigation into the application of QUINTE simulator in industry was carried out at two pilot companies. The results show the validity of this simulator. An attempt to run QUINTE in a user-friendly environment, i.e., the commercial simulation software – ArenaÂź is also described in this paper.NOTATION: QUINTE QualitĂ€t in der Teilefertigung  (Quality in  the manufacturing process)

Drying colloidal systems: laboratory models for a wide range of applications

    Get PDF
The drying of complex fluids provides a powerful insight into phenomena that take place on time and length scales not normally accessible. An important feature of complex fluids, colloidal dispersions and polymer solutions is their high sensitivity to weak external actions. Thus, the drying of complex fluids involves a large number of physical and chemical processes. The scope of this review is the capacity to tune such systems to reproduce and explore specific properties in a physics laboratory. A wide variety of systems are presented, ranging from functional coatings, food science, cosmetology, medical diagnostics and forensics to geophysics and art

SXRD measurements of residual stresses in sintered diamond-cobalt composites

    No full text
Diamond-cobalt composites are used for cutting tools. Residual stress after manufacturecan reduce the lifetime of such composite cutting tools and, hence, the stress state needs to be wellunderstood. Within this study, stress measurements on a cobalt diamond composite were made bySXRD to deduce stress states in the cobalt matrix using the (222) reflection. The application ofdifferent apertures allowed the investigation of stress in small areas of cobalt surrounding adiamond and in areas at different distances to a diamond. In the areas adjacent to the diamondincreased residual stresses were found in the cobalt matrix. Furthermore, approximations for radialand tangential residual stresses have been derived which show to be different
