    The local electronic structure of alpha-Li3N

    Full text link
    New theoretical and experimental investigation of the occupied and unoccupied local electronic density of states (DOS) are reported for alpha-Li3N. Band structure and density functional theory calculations confirm the absence of covalent bonding character. However, real-space full-multiple-scattering (RSFMS) calculations of the occupied local DOS finds less extreme nominal valences than have previously been proposed. Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS), RSFMS calculations, and calculations based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation are used to characterize the unoccupied electronic final states local to both the Li and N sites. There is good agreement between experiment and theory. Throughout the Li 1s near-edge region, both experiment and theory find strong similarities in the s- and p-type components of the unoccupied local final density of states projected onto an orbital angular momentum basis (l-DOS). An unexpected, significant correspondence exists between the near-edge spectra for the Li 1s and N 1s initial states. We argue that both spectra are sampling essentially the same final density of states due to the combination of long core-hole lifetimes, long photoelectron lifetimes, and the fact that orbital angular momentum is the same for all relevant initial states. Such considerations may be generically applicable for low atomic number compounds.Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

    Influence of the Dufour effect on convection in binary gas mixtures

    Full text link
    Linear and nonlinear properties of convection in binary fluid layers heated from below are investigated, in particular for gas parameters. A Galerkin approximation for realistic boundary conditions that describes stationary and oscillatory convection in the form of straight parallel rolls is used to determine the influence of the Dufour effect on the bifurcation behaviour of convective flow intensity, vertical heat current, and concentration mixing. The Dufour--induced changes in the bifurcation topology and the existence regimes of stationary and traveling wave convection are elucidated. To check the validity of the Galerkin results we compare with finite--difference numerical simulations of the full hydrodynamical field equations. Furthermore, we report on the scaling behaviour of linear properties of the stationary instability.Comment: 14 pages and 10 figures as uuencoded Postscript file (using uufiles

    Vortices and the entrainment transition in the 2D Kuramoto model

    We study synchronization in the two-dimensional lattice of coupled phase oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. When the coupling KK is larger than a threshold KEK_E, there is a macroscopic cluster of frequency-synchronized oscillators. We explain why the macroscopic cluster disappears at KEK_E. We view the system in terms of vortices, since cluster boundaries are delineated by the motion of these topological defects. In the entrained phase (K>KEK>K_E), vortices move in fixed paths around clusters, while in the unentrained phase (K<KEK<K_E), vortices sometimes wander off. These deviant vortices are responsible for the disappearance of the macroscopic cluster. The regularity of vortex motion is determined by whether clusters behave as single effective oscillators. The unentrained phase is also characterized by time-dependent cluster structure and the presence of chaos. Thus, the entrainment transition is actually an order-chaos transition. We present an analytical argument for the scaling KEKLK_E\sim K_L for small lattices, where KLK_L is the threshold for phase-locking. By also deriving the scaling KLlogNK_L\sim\log N, we thus show that KElogNK_E\sim\log N for small NN, in agreement with numerics. In addition, we show how to use the linearized model to predict where vortices are generated.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Dynamics of Multiferroic Domain Wall in Spin-Cycloidal Ferroelectric DyMnO3_{3}

    Full text link
    We report the dielectric dispersion of the giant magnetocapacitance (GMC) in multiferroic DyMnO3_{3} over a wide frequency range. The GMC is found to be attributable not to the softened electromagnon but to the electric-field-driven motion of multiferroic domain wall (DW). In contrast to conventional ferroelectric DWs, the present multiferroic DW motion holds extremely high relaxation rate of \sim10710^{7} s1^{-1} even at low temperatures. This mobile nature as well as the model simulation suggests that the multiferroic DW is not atomically thin as in ferroelectrics but thick, reflecting its magnetic origin.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Half-Quantum Vortices in Thin Film of Superfluid 3^3He

    Full text link
    Stability of a half-quantum vortex (HQV) in superfluid 3^3He has been discussed recently by Kawakami, Tsutsumi and Machida in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 79}, 092506 (2009). We further extend this work here and consider the A2_2 phase of superfluid 3^3He confined in thin slab geometry and analyze the HQV realized in this setting. Solutions of HQV and singly quantized singular vortex are evaluated numerically by solving the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation and respective first critical angular velocities are obtained by employing these solutions. We show that the HQV in the A2_2 phase is stable near the boundary between the A2_2 and A1_1 phases. It is found that temperature and magnetic field must be fixed first in the stable region and subsequently the angular velocity of the system should be increased from zero to a sufficiently large value to create a HQV with sufficiently large probability. A HQV does not form if the system starts with a fixed angular velocity and subsequently the temperature is lowered down to the A2_2 phase. It is estimated that the external magnetic field with strength on the order of 1 T is required to have a sufficiently large domain in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram to have a stable HQV.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    A ferroelectric monoclinic phase of space group CmCm (MAM_A type) has been discovered in 0.65Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3)O3_{2/3})O_3-0.35PbTiO3_3 by means of high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. It appears at room temperature in a single crystal previously poled under an electric field of 43 kV/cm applied along the pseudocubic [001] direction, in the region of the phase diagram around the morphotropic phase boundary between the rhombohedral (R3m) and the tetragonal (P4mm) phases. The monoclinic phase has lattice parameters a = 5.692 A, b = 5.679 A, c = 4.050 A and β\beta = 90.1590.15^{\circ}, with the bm_m-axis oriented along the pseudo-cubic [110] direction . It is similar to the monoclinic phase observed in PbZr1x_{1-x}Tix_xO3_3, but different from that recently found in Pb(Zn1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3)O3_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO3_3, which is of space group PmPm (MCM_C type).Comment: Revised version after referees' comments. The VISTA Science Archive

    Full text link
    We describe the VISTA Science Archive (VSA) and its first public release of data from five of the six VISTA Public Surveys. The VSA exists to support the VISTA Surveys through their lifecycle: the VISTA Public Survey consortia can use it during their quality control assessment of survey data products before submission to the ESO Science Archive Facility (ESO SAF); it supports their exploitation of survey data prior to its publication through the ESO SAF; and, subsequently, it provides the wider community with survey science exploitation tools that complement the data product repository functionality of the ESO SAF. This paper has been written in conjunction with the first public release of public survey data through the VSA and is designed to help its users understand the data products available and how the functionality of the VSA supports their varied science goals. We describe the design of the database and outline the database-driven curation processes that take data from nightly pipeline-processed and calibrated FITS files to create science-ready survey datasets. Much of this design, and the codebase implementing it, derives from our earlier WFCAM Science Archive (WSA), so this paper concentrates on the VISTA-specific aspects and on improvements made to the system in the light of experience gained in operating the WSA.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures. Direct observation of the formation of polar nanoregions in Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3 using neutron pair distribution function analysis

    Get PDF
    Using neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis over the temperature range from 1000 K to 15 K, we demonstrate the existence of local polarization and the formation of medium-range, polar nanoregions (PNRs) with local rhombohedral order in a prototypical relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3. We estimate the volume fraction of the PNRs as a function of temperature and show that this fraction steadily increases from 0 % to a maximum of \sim 30% as the temperature decreases from 650 K to 15 K. Below T\sim200 K the PNRs start to overlap as their volume fraction reaches the percolation threshold. We propose that percolating PNRs and their concomitant overlap play a significant role in the relaxor behavior of Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
