    Baby Boom Migration and Its Impact on Rural America

    Members of the baby boom cohort, now 45-63 years old, are approaching a period in their lives when moves to rural and small-town destinations increase. An analysis of age-specific, net migration during the 1990s reveals extensive shifts in migration patterns as Americans move through different life-cycle stages. Assuming similar age patterns of migration, this report identifies the types of nonmetropolitan counties that are likely to experience the greatest surge in baby boom migration during 2000-20 and projects the likely impact on the size and distribution of retirement-age populations in destination counties. The analysis finds a significant increase in the propensity to migrate to nonmetro counties as people reach their fifties and sixties and projects a shift in migration among boomers toward more isolated settings, especially those with high natural and urban amenities and lower housing costs.     By 2020, the effects of demographic changes and income growth will increase per capita spending on food 7.1 percent. Income growth alone, which will effect spending increases of almost 10 percent on away-from-home foods and 3 percent on at-home foods, will raise per capita food spending about 6 percent. Expansion of the Nation's population will drive growth in food demand and, combined with rising incomes and other demographic changes, is projected to boost total U.S. food spending 26.3 percent. On a national level, the slow but steady growth of the population will result in little variation among expenditure growth levels of individual food groups.     DocStu: Creating an E-Mentoring Program to Support Current and Prospective Doctoral Students

    Research describes mentoring as a best-practice for supporting overall student success for graduate and doctoral students.Unfortunately, faculty are not able to serve in a mentoring role for all of their students.The purpose of this project is to utilize university alumni who have successfully completed a doctoral program, to serve as mentors to prospective and current doctoral students. E-mentoring programs in particular,provide flexibility and have multiple, lasting benefits for everyone involved.Intended to start summer 2020, DocStu will include 20-24 people in the first cohort. DocStu was created as a way to provide holistic support to current and prospective doctoral students throughout all stages of their matriculation. Going through a doctoral program is a journey that seems never ending but having a supportive environment while pursuing a post-graduate degree is key to student success. DocStu aims to be a resource, village and safe space as students navigate this experience while simultaneously trying to balance life and work

    Faculty sense of academic optimism and its relationship to students\u27 achievement in well performing high schools

    The aim of this study was to determine the organizational characteristics and behaviors that contribute to sustaining a culture of academic optimism as a mechanism of student achievement. While there is a developing research base identifying both the individual elements of academic optimism as well as the academic optimism construct itself as contributors to student achievement, little information exists to assist school leaders in identifying specific organizational practices that sustain collective teacher efficacy, academic emphasis, and trust in students and families. This study employs case study methodology to investigate faculties\u27 interpretations of academic optimism by examining the organizational and instructional practices at three well performing Virginia high schools. Gathered data includes information obtained through direct interviews with 18 (six at each site) faculty members, observations from 12 (four at each site) classrooms, and a review of each school\u27s vision or mission statements, improvement initiatives, and course offerings and enrollments

    Various types of runaway outreach methods and practices were investigated. A proposed model of runaway outreach was suggested based on the results of other documented and practiced methods of outreach. The sources used were from published literature, and a training manual devised by a runaway serviees program. The suggested model is congruent with other successful teen runaway outreach programs and it supports the position that adolescents and their families must be reached and supported before, during and after a runaway episode

    In 2011, the Obama Administration introduced the Dear Colleague Letter (“DCL” or “Letter”), which drastically reshaped the nature and scope of Title IX and redefined how sex-based discrimination is viewed and addressed on college campuses around the country. While the overall intent of the Letter was to address historical mishandlings of sexual misconduct on the part of victims, including sexual assault in higher education, many commentators have expressed the concern that the guidelines aggressively pursued this end without considering several sweeping impacts. Where Title IX used to be a means for providing equal access to education through government oversight, through the Letter, critics have argued that it is more aptly characterized as guidance that has shaped college campuses into courtrooms. Specifically, the Letter set forth broad definitions of what constitutes sexual misconduct, as well as required implementation of new procedures for investigating said claims. This ambiguous guidance resulted in inadequate protections for all students involved in the Title IX process
