Interrupted and Unfinished:The Open-Ended Dante of the Commedia

    Get PDF
This essay interprets Dante’s Commedia as an ‘open work’ (Eco). It grounds its open-endedness in its representations of interruption: from fictional obstacles in the protagonist’s path in the Inferno to the narrator’s anxiety over unfinishedness in the Paradiso. Taking its cue from Boccaccio’s creative rewriting of Dante’s life, the essay resists the pressure of ‘total coherence’ embedded in (and often projected onto) the Commedia, in order to reclaim the material vulnerability of the text and of its author.Nicolò Crisafi, ‘/i&gt’;, in Openness in Medieval Europe, ed. by Manuele Gragnolati and Almut Suerbaum, Cultural Inquiry, 23 (Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2022), pp. 85-102 <https://doi.org/10.37050/ci-23_05

The paper relates to the introduction of the standard requirement and cost concepts in health care financing system. The author, after a reconstruction of the evolution of health service financing in Italy, highlights the criticality of the system. Finally, the author examines the possibility that the standard requirement and cost concepts obtain a different meaning from the original

IllegittimitĂ  conseguenziale delle leggi e discrezionalitĂ . Commento alla sentenza n. 251 del 2016 della Corte costituzionale

The paper reconstructs judgment n. 251/2016, by which the Constitutional Court declared the unlawfulness of certain provisions of l. n. 124 of 7 August 2015. With this act Parliament had delegated the Government to reorganize public administrations. In the judgment the Court confines the ruling only to the enabling act, without prejudice to the resulting legislative decree, excluding the application of the institute of the consequential unlawfulness of the laws referred to in art. 27, paragraph 2, of l. n. 87/1953. The contribution, therefore, reconstructs the institute of consequential unlawfulness in order to assess the correctness of the Constitutional Court’s decision

Outside The Frame: Towards A Phenomenology Of Texts And Technology

    Get PDF
The subject of my dissertation is how phenomenology can be used as a tool for understanding the intersection between texts and technology. What I am suggesting here is that, specifically in connection with the focus of our program in Texts and Technology, there are very significant questions concerning how digital communications technology extends our humanity, and more importantly what kind of epistemological and ontological questions are raised because of this. There needs to be a coherent theory for Texts and Technology that will help us to understand this shift, and I feel that this should be the main focus for the program itself. In this dissertation I present an analysis of the different phenomenological aspects of the study of Texts and Technology. For phenomenologists such as Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty, technology, in all of its forms, is the way in which human consciousness is embodied. Through the creation and manipulation of technology, humanity extends itself into the physical world. Therefore, I feel we must try to understand this extension as more than merely a reflection of materialist practices, because first and foremost we are discussing how the human mind uses technology to further its advancement. I will detail some of the theoretical arguments both for and against the study of technology as a function of human consciousness. I will focus on certain issues, such as problems of archiving and copyright, as central to the field. I will further argue how from a phenomenological standpoint we are in the presence of a phenomenological shift from the primacy of print towards a more hybrid system of representing human communications

Simultaneous Trading in 'Lit' and Dark Pools

We consider an optimal trading problem over a finite period of time during which an investor has access to both a standard exchange and a dark pool. We take the exchange to be an order-driven market and propose a continuous-time setup for the best bid price and the market spread, both modelled by L\'evy processes. Effects on the best bid price arising from the arrival of limit buy orders at more favourable prices, the incoming market sell orders potentially walking the book, and deriving from the cancellations of limit sell orders at the best ask price are incorporated in the proposed price dynamics. A permanent impact that occurs when 'lit' pool trades cannot be avoided is built in, and an instantaneous impact that models the slippage, to which all 'lit' exchange trades are subject, is also considered. We assume that the trading price in the dark pool is the mid-price and that no fees are due for posting orders. We allow for partial trade executions in the dark pool, and we find the optimal trading strategy in both venues. Since the mid-price is taken from the exchange, the dynamics of the limit order book also affects the optimal allocation of shares in the dark pool. We propose a general objective function and we show that, subject to suitable technical conditions, the value function can be characterised by the unique continuous viscosity solution to the associated partial integro differential equation. We present two explicit examples of the price and the spread models, and derive the associated optimal trading strategy numerically. We discuss the various degrees of the agent's risk aversion and further show that roundtrips, i.e. posting the remaining inventory in the dark pool at every point in time, are not necessarily beneficial

Disentangling protein and lipid interactions that control a molecular switch in photosynthetic light harvesting

In the photosynthetic apparatus of plants and algae, the major Light-Harvesting Complexes (LHCII) collect excitations and funnel these to the photosynthetic reaction center where charge separation takes place. In excess light conditions, remodeling of the photosynthetic membrane and protein conformational changes produces a photoprotective state in which excitations are rapidly quenched to avoid photodamage. The quenched states are associated with protein aggregation, however the LHCII complexes are also proposed to have an intrinsic capacity to shift between light harvesting and fluorescence-quenched conformational states. To disentangle the effects of protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions on the LHCII photoprotective switch, we compared the structural and fluorescent properties of LHCII lipid nanodiscs and proteoliposomes with very low protein -to-lipid ratios. We demonstrate that LHCII proteins adapta fully fluorescent state in nanodiscs and in proteoliposomes with highly diluted protein densities. Increasing the protein density induces a transition into a mildly-quenched state that reaches a plateau at a molar protein-to-lipid ratio of 0.001 and has a fluorescence yield reminiscent of the light-harvesting state in vivo. The low onset for quenching strongly suggests that LHCII-LHCII attractive interactions occur inside membranes. The transition at low protein densities does not involve strong changes in the excitonic circular-dichroism spectrum and is distinct from a transition occurring at very high protein densities that comprises strong fluorescence quenching and circular-dichroism spectral changes involving chlorophyll 611 and 612, correlating with proposed quencher sites of the photoprotective mechanism
