R&D, spillovers, innovatoin systems and the genesis of regional growth in Europe
Research on the impact of innovation on regional economic performance in Europe has fundamentally followed three approaches: a) the analysis of the link between investment in R&D, patents, and economic growth; b) the study of the existence and efficiency of regional innovation systems; and c) the examination of geographical diffusion of regional knowledge spillovers. These complementary approaches have, however, rarely been combined. Important operational and methodological barriers have thwarted any potential crossfertilization. In this paper, we try to fill this gap in the literature by combining in one model R&D, spillovers, and innovation systems approaches. A multiple regression analysis is conducted for all regions of the EU-25, including measures of R&D investment, proxies for regional innovation systems, and knowledge and socio-economic spillovers. This approach allows us to discriminate between the influence of internal factors and external knowledge and institutional flows on regional economic growth. The empirical results highlight how the interaction between local and external research with local and external socio-economic and institutional conditions determines the potential of every region in order to maximise its innovation capacity. They also indicate the importance of proximity for the transmission of economically productive knowledge, as spillovers show strong distance decay effects. In the EU-25 context, only the innovative efforts pursued within a 180 minute travel radius have a positive and significant impact on regional growth performance.Economic growth, innovation, R&D, knowledge, spillovers,
The geographical processes behind innovation: a Europe-United States comparative analysis
The United States and European Union differ significantly in terms of their innovative capacity: the former have been able to gain and maintain world leadership in innovation and technology while the latter continues to lag. Notwithstanding the magnitude of this innovation gap and the political emphasis placed upon it on both sides of the Atlantic, very little systematic comparative analysis has been carried out on its causes. The empirical literature has emphasised the structural differences between the two continents in the quantity and quality of the major âinputsâ to innovation: R&D investments and human capital. The very different spatial organisation of innovative activities in the EU and the US â as suggested by a variety of contributions in the field of economic geography â could also influence innovative output. This paper analyses and compares a wide set of territorial processes that influence innovation in Europe and the United States. The higher mobility of capital, population, and knowledge in the US not only promotes the agglomeration of research activity in specific areas of the country but also enables a variety of territorial mechanisms to fully exploit local innovative activities and (informational) synergies. In the European Union, in contrast, imperfect market integration, and institutional and cultural barriers across the continent prevent innovative agents from maximising the benefits from external economies and localised interactions, but compensatory forms of geographical process may be emerging in concert with further European integration.Innovation, Research and development, Regions, Spillovers, Agglomeration, Systems of innovation, European Union, United States
Harvesting Entities from the Web Using Unique Identifiers -- IBEX
In this paper we study the prevalence of unique entity identifiers on the
Web. These are, e.g., ISBNs (for books), GTINs (for commercial products), DOIs
(for documents), email addresses, and others. We show how these identifiers can
be harvested systematically from Web pages, and how they can be associated with
human-readable names for the entities at large scale.
Starting with a simple extraction of identifiers and names from Web pages, we
show how we can use the properties of unique identifiers to filter out noise
and clean up the extraction result on the entire corpus. The end result is a
database of millions of uniquely identified entities of different types, with
an accuracy of 73--96% and a very high coverage compared to existing knowledge
bases. We use this database to compute novel statistics on the presence of

Enumeration of s-d separators in DAGs with application to reliability analysis in temporal graphs
Temporal graphs are graphs in which arcs have temporal labels, specifying at which time they can be traversed. Motivated by recent results concerning the reliability analysis of a temporal graph through the enumeration of minimal cutsets in the corresponding line graph, in this paper we attack the problem of enumerating minimal s-d separators in s-d directed acyclic graphs (in short, s-d DAGs), also known as 2-terminal DAGs or s-t digraphs. Our main result is an algorithm for enumerating all the minimal s-d separators in a DAG with O(nm) delay, where n and m are respectively the number of nodes and arcs, and the delay is the time between the output of two consecutive solutions. To this aim, we give a characterization of the minimal s-d separators in a DAG through vertex cuts of an expanded version of the DAG itself. As a consequence of our main result, we provide an algorithm for enumerating all the minimal s-d cutsets in a temporal graph with delay O(m3), where m is the number of temporal arcs
Experimental Analysis of Heat Transfer in Passive Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Systems for CSP Plants
Abstract Thermal energy storage is a key factor for efficiency, dispatchability and economic sustainability of concentrated solar plants. The latent heat storage systems could ensure a significant reduction in construction costs and environmental impact, because of its high storage energy density. In LHTES, the heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid and the storage system is strongly limited by the reduced thermal conductivity of the storage media. For operating temperatures between 200 and 600 °C, the most used storage media are salts. In order to evaluate solutions which promote the thermal conductivity, by increasing the exchange surface and/or the addition of nanoparticles to the storage media, Enea set up a small facility to test some storage concepts. In this facility, a diathermic oil flows through three elementary "shell-and-tube" storage systems, connected in series, reaching a maximum temperature of about 280 °C. The elementary storage systems are filled with a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrates salts, which melt at about 225 °C. Moreover a small percentage of alumina and silica nanoparticles were added to this mixture. The results of the experiments show an increase of the thermal diffusivity of the medium not only for the presence of fins on the heat transfer tubes but also because of convective flows within the melted fraction were established. These phenomena strongly reduce the charging times of the system (by about 30%). Instead, the presence of nanoparticles increases the thermal capacity and the thermal conductivity of the storage system but seems not to have a relevant effect on the thermal diffusivity of the mixture. This behavior depends on the type of used nanoparticles, which can significantly change over time some characteristics of the storage medium, in which they are dispersed, leaving other characteristics unchanged, according to mechanisms which are still to be well understood
An ant-colony based approach for real-time implicit collaborative information seeking

We designed and developed three different algorithms that employ an ACO-inspired strategy to provide implicit collaborative-seeking features in real time to search engines. The three different algorithms â NaĂŻveRank, RandomRank, and SessionRank â leverage on different principles of ACO in order to exploit usersâ interactions and provide them with more relevant results. We designed an evaluation experiment employing two widely used standard datasets of query-click logs issued to two major Web search engines. Integrating algorithm visualization video into a first-year algorithm and data structure course
In this paper we describe the results that we have obtained while integrating algorithm visualization (AV) movies (strongly tightened with the other teaching material), within a first-year undergraduate course on algorithms and data structures. Our experimental results seem to support the hypothesis that making these movies available significantly improved students' performances. Moreover, the movies were highly appreciated by the students (both from a comprehensibility point of view and from a usefulness point of view), even though with a low attitude towards the emerging video pod-cast technology. Finally, our results indicate the necessity of integrating the AV movies with audio comment, which seems to be one of the most interesting research question left open by our study. © International Forum of Educational Technology & Society (IFETS)
