    In search of the authentic nation: landscape and national identity in Canada and Switzerland

    While the study of nationalism and national identity has flourished in the last decade, little attention has been devoted to the conditions under which natural environments acquire significance in definitions of nationhood. This article examines the identity-forming role of landscape depictions in two polyethnic nation-states: Canada and Switzerland. Two types of geographical national identity are identified. The first – what we call the ‘nationalisation of nature’– portrays zarticular landscapes as expressions of national authenticity. The second pattern – what we refer to as the ‘naturalisation of the nation’– rests upon a notion of geographical determinism that depicts specific landscapes as forces capable of determining national identity. The authors offer two reasons why the second pattern came to prevail in the cases under consideration: (1) the affinity between wild landscape and the Romantic ideal of pure, rugged nature, and (2) a divergence between the nationalist ideal of ethnic homogeneity and the polyethnic composition of the two societies under consideration

    Geons with spin and charge

    We construct new geon-type black holes in D>3 dimensions for Einstein's theory coupled to gauge fields. A static nondegenerate vacuum black hole has a geon quotient provided the spatial section admits a suitable discrete isometry, and an antisymmetric tensor field of rank 2 or D-2 with a pure F^2 action can be included by an appropriate (and in most cases nontrivial) choice of the field strength bundle. We find rotating geons as quotients of the Myers-Perry(-AdS) solution when D is odd and not equal to 7. For other D we show that such rotating geons, if they exist at all, cannot be continuously deformed to zero angular momentum. With a negative cosmological constant, we construct geons with angular momenta on a torus at the infinity. As an example of a nonabelian gauge field, we show that the D=4 spherically symmetric SU(2) black hole admits a geon version with a trivial gauge bundle. Various generalisations, including both black-brane geons and Yang-Mills theories with Chern-Simons terms, are briefly discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. LaTeX with amssymb, amsmath.     Hawai‘i Forest Review: Synthesizing the Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation of a Model System

    As the most remote archipelago in the world, the Hawaiian Islands are home to a highly endemic and disharmonic biota that has fascinated biologists for centuries. Forests are the dominant terrestrial biome in Hawai‘i, spanning complex, heterogeneous climates across substrates that vary tremendously in age, soil structure, and nutrient availability. Species richness is low in Hawaiian forests compared to other tropical forests, as a consequence of dispersal limitation from continents and adaptive radiations in only some lineages, and forests are dominated by the widespread Metrosideros species complex. Low species richness provides a relatively tractable model system for studies of community assembly, local adaptation, and species interactions. Moreover, Hawaiian forests provide insights into predicted patterns of evolution on islands, revealing that while some evidence supports “island syndromes,” there are exceptions to them all. For example, Hawaiian plants are not as a whole less defended against herbivores, less dispersible, more conservative in resource use, or more slow-growing than their continental relatives. Clearly, more work is needed to understand the drivers, sources, and constraints on phenotypic variation among Hawaiian species, including both widespread and rare species, and to understand the role of this variation for ecological and evolutionary processes, which will further contribute to conservation of this unique biota. Today, Hawaiian forests are among the most threatened globally. Resource management failures – the proliferation of non-native species in particular – have led to devastating declines in native taxa and resulted in dominance by novel species assemblages. Conservation and restoration of Hawaiian forests now rely on managing threats including climate change, ongoing species introductions, novel pathogens, lost mutualists, and altered ecosystem dynamics through the use of diverse tools and strategies grounded in basic ecological, evolutionary, and biocultural principles. The future of Hawaiian forests thus depends on the synthesis of ecological and evolutionary research, which will continue to inform future conservation and restoration practices

    Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas

    Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN

    Stimulus properties : perceptual learning and their effect on disappearances of luminous figures

    Subjects viewed luminous targets in a dark room. Target size and composition were varied to determine their effect on subjects' reports of complete figure disappearances. The number of complete target disappearances decreased as the size of the retinal image increased. Fragmentations related to meaning and shape were also greatest under viewing conditions involving small retinal images. Subjects showed no preference when they were given the opportunity to respond to either shape of conceptual similarities in the target. Prior perceptual learning experiences were also varied. Evidence for perceptual learning on a specific target (PPL) was not found with subjects who reported that they had astigmatism. Perceptual learning was demonstrated using either a within-S or between-S design, and was found to decay rapidly over time. More meaningful training stimuli produced a greater degree of learning.     A preliminary study: USMC tactical communications technical control needs for the Landing Force Integrated Communications System.

    This study uses a systems analysis approach to determine the communications technical control needs of the Fleet Marine Force as the transition from analog to all digital systems occurs. Introductory material is presented on the Landing Force Integrated Communications System (LFICS) and associated methods of communications system control- The decision problem is stated as a needed choice between alternatives in both near term (1987-1990) and long term (1991+) eras of service. Examined are the technical control functional requirements for both the transitional near term and the eventual long term digital systems. The study raises issues on the automation of technical control in the development of a systems engineering functional description of an "ideal" facility. Consideration is given to the many other service and industrial solutions in the formulation of twelve alternative approaches to the total solution of communications technical control in the near and long term- A gualitative, ordinal valued, multicriteria decision theory model is applied to the selection between these alternatives as opposed to a more quantitative cost and operational effectiveness analysis (COEA) study approach. The decision model is fully developed for this application and for general future use by the interested reader. Conclusions and recommendations are made based on analysis of the modeling results.
