Lagrangian acceleration statistics in turbulent flows
We show that the probability densities af accelerations of Lagrangian test
particles in turbulent flows as measured by Bodenschatz et al. [Nature 409,
1017 (2001)] are in excellent agreement with the predictions of a stochastic
model introduced in [C. Beck, PRL 87, 180601 (2001)] if the fluctuating
friction parameter is assumed to be log-normally distributed. In a generalized
statistical mechanics setting, this corresponds to a superstatistics of
log-normal type. We analytically evaluate all hyperflatnes factors for this
model and obtain a flatness prediction in good agreement with the experimental
data. There is also good agreement with DNS data of Gotoh et al. We relate the
model to a generalized Sawford model with fluctuating parameters, and discuss a
possible universality of the small-scale statistics.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
System and method for moving a probe to follow movements of tissue
An apparatus is described for moving a probe that engages moving living tissue such as a heart or an artery that is penetrated by the probe, which moves the probe in synchronism with the tissue to maintain the probe at a constant location with respect to the tissue. The apparatus includes a servo positioner which moves a servo member to maintain a constant distance from a sensed object while applying very little force to the sensed object, and a follower having a stirrup at one end resting on a surface of the living tissue and another end carrying a sensed object adjacent to the servo member. A probe holder has one end mounted on the servo member and another end which holds the probe

The optical variability of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809
We report on a short optical monitoring programme of the narrow-line Seyfert
1 Galaxy IRAS 13224-3809. Previous X-ray observations of this object have shown
persistent giant variability. The degree of variability at other wavelengths
may then be used to constrain the conditions and emission processes within the
nucleus. Optical variability is expected if the electron population responsible
for the soft X-ray emission is changing rapidly and Compton-upscattering
infrared photons in the nucleus, or if the mechanism responsible for X-ray
emission causes all the emission processes to vary together. We find that there
is no significant optical variability with a firm upper limit of 2 per cent and
conclude that the primary soft X-ray emission region produces little of the
observed optical emission. The X-ray and optical emission regions must be
physically distinct and any reprocessing of X-rays into the optical waveband
occurs some distance from the nucleus. The lack of optical variability
indicates that the energy density of infrared radiation in the nucleus is at
most equal to that of the ultraviolet radiation since little is upscattered
into the optical waveband. The extremely large X-ray variability of IRAS
13224-3809 may be explained by relativistic boosting of more modest variations.
Although such boosting enhances X-ray variability over optical variability,
this only partially explains the lack of optical variability.Comment: 5 pages with 8 postscript figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Scaling and singularities in the entrainment of globally-coupled oscillators
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled
oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase
dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the
diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from
the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the
unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly
saturated mode on the linear growth rate . In general
we find where is the
diffusion coefficient and is the mode number of the unstable mode. The
unusual factor arises from a singularity in the cubic term of
the amplitude equation.Comment: 11 pages (Revtex); paper submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Reanalysis of Copernicus Measurements on Interstellar Carbon Monoxide
We used archival data acquired with the Copernicus satellite to reexamine CO
column densities because self-consistent oscillator strengths are now
available. Our focus is on lines of sight containing modest amounts of
molecular species. Our resulting column densities are small enough that
self-shielding from photodissociation is not occurring in the clouds probed by
the observations. While our sample shows that the column densities of CO and H2
are related, no correspondence with the CH column density is evident. The case
for the CH+ column density is less clear. Recent chemical models for these
sight lines suggest that CH is mainly a by-product of CH+ synthesis in low
density gas. The models are most successful in reproducing the amounts of CO in
the densest sight lines. Thus, much of the CO absorption must arise from denser
clumps along the line of sight to account for the trend with H2.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Remote functionalisation via sodium alkylamidozincate intermediates : access to unusual fluorenone and pyridyl ketone reactivity patterns
Treating fluorenone or 2-benzoylpyridine with the sodium zincate [(TMEDA)center dot Na(mu-Bu-t)(mu-TMP)Zn(Bu-t)] in hexane solution, gives efficient Bu-t addition across the respective organic substrate in a highly unusual 1,6-fashion, producing isolable organometallic intermediates which can be quenched and aerobically oxidised to give 3-tert-butyl-9H-fluoren-9-one and 2-benzoyl-5-tert-butylpyridine respectively
Nonlinear saturation of electrostatic waves: mobile ions modify trapping scaling
The amplitude equation for an unstable electrostatic wave in a multi-species
Vlasov plasma has been derived. The dynamics of the mode amplitude is
studied using an expansion in ; in particular, in the limit
, the singularities in the expansion coefficients are
analyzed to predict the asymptotic dependence of the electric field on the
linear growth rate . Generically , as
, but in the limit of infinite ion mass or for
instabilities in reflection-symmetric systems due to real eigenvalues the more
familiar trapping scaling is predicted.Comment: 13 pages (Latex/RevTex), 4 postscript encapsulated figures which are
