VLA Observations of the "Eye of the Tornado"- the High Velocity \HII Region G357.63-0.06
The unusual supernova remnant candidate G357.7-0.1 and the compact source
G357.63-0.06 have been observed with the Very Large Array at 1.4 and 8.3 GHz.
The H92 line (8.3 GHz) was detected from the compact source with a
surprising velocity of about -210 km/s indicating that this source is an \HII
region, is most likely located at the Galactic center, and is unrelated to the
SNR. The \HI absorption line (1.4 GHz) data toward these sources supports this
picture and suggests that G357.7-0.1 lies farther away than the Galactic

Massive increase in the stiffness of the human lens nucleus with age: the basis for presbyopia?
Purpose: To determine the stiffness of different regions of human lenses as a function of age, and to correlate the biophysical measurements in the lens center with nuclear water content.
Methods: A custom made probe fitted to a dynamic mechanical analyzer was employed to measure stiffness values at 1 mm increments across equatorial sections of individual human lenses. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to determine the percentage water content in the nuclei of human lenses.
Results: There was a pronounced increase in lens stiffness over the age range from 14 to 78. In the nucleus, stiffness values varied almost 1,000 fold over this age range, with the largest change observed in lenses between the ages of 20 to 60. Nuclear stiffness values increased on average by a factor of 450. By contrast, in the cortex the average increase in stiffness was approximately 20 fold over this same time period. In lenses younger than age 30, the nucleus was found to be softer than the cortex. This was true for all six lenses examined. In contrast all lenses older than 30 were characterized by having nuclear values higher than those of the cortex. In lenses over the age of 50, the lens nucleus was typically an order of magnitude more rigid than that of the cortex. The crossover age, when the cortical and nuclear stiffness values were similar, was in the 30s. There was no significant change in the water content of the human lens nucleus from age 13 to age 82.
Conclusions: There is a marked increase in the stiffness of the human lens with age. This is most pronounced in the nucleus. Since in vivo data indicate that the nucleus must change shape significantly during accommodation, it is highly likely that these measured changes in physical properties will markedly diminish the ability of the lens to accommodate, and thus may be a major contributing factor to presbyopia. Since there was no measurable difference in the water contents of the nuclear regions of the lenses, this marked increase in stiffness is not due to compaction of the lens nucleus
High Velocity Cloud Complex H: A Satellite of the Milky Way in a Retrograde Orbit?
Observations with the Green Bank Telescope of 21cm HI emission from the
high-velocity cloud Complex H suggest that it is interacting with the Milky
Way. A model in which the cloud is a satellite of the Galaxy in an inclined,
retrograde circular orbit reproduces both the cloud's average velocity and its
velocity gradient with latitude. The model places Complex H at approximately 33
kpc from the Galactic Center on a retrograde orbit inclined about 45 degrees to
the Galactic plane. At this location it has an HI mass > 6 10^6 Msun and
dimensions of at least 10 by 5 kpc. Some of the diffuse HI associated with the
cloud has apparently been decelerated by interaction with Galactic gas. Complex
H has similarities to the dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A and to some compact
high-velocity clouds, and has an internal structure nearly identical to parts
of the Magellanic Stream, with a pressure P/k about 100 cm^{-3} K.Comment: 12 pages includes 4 figures. To be published in Astrophysical Journal

The Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey: I. Overview and Images
The first epoch Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS1) is a radio continuum
survey made using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) at 843
MHz with a resolution of 43" X 43" cosec |delta|. The region surveyed is 245
deg < l < 355 deg, |b| < 1.5 deg. The thirteen 9 deg X 3 deg mosaic images
presented here are the superposition of over 450 complete synthesis
observations, each taking 12 h and covering 70' X 70' cosec |delta|. The
root-mean-square sensitivity over much of the mosaiced survey is 1-2 mJy/beam
(1 sigma), and the positional accuracy is approximately 1" X 1" cosec |delta|
for sources brighter than 20 mJy. The dynamic range is no better than 250:1,
and this also constrains the sensitivity in some parts of the images. The
survey area of 330 sq deg contains well over 12,000 unresolved or barely
resolved objects, almost all of which are extra-galactic sources lying in the
Zone of Avoidance. In addition a significant fraction of this area is covered
by extended, diffuse emission associated with thermal complexes, discrete H II
regions, supernova remnants, and other structures in the Galactic interstellar

A possible radio supernova in the outer part of NGC 3310
As part of an on-going radio supernova monitoring program, we have discovered
a variable, compact steep spectrum radio source ~65 arcsec (~4 kpc) from the
centre of the starburst galaxy NGC 3310. If the source is at the distance of
NGC 3310, then its 5 GHz luminosity is ~3 x 10^{19} WHz^-1. The source
luminosity, together with its variability characteristics, compact structure
(<17 mas) and its association with a group of HII regions, leads us to propose
that it is a previously uncatalogued type II radio supernova. A search of
archival data also shows an associated X-ray source with a luminosity similar

Partitioning and redistribution of sulphur during S-stress in Macroptilium atropurpureum cv. Siratro
During the first 7 d of sulphate-deprivation stored SO42- was redistributed and assimilated into organic forms in the tropical legume Macroptilium atropurpu-reum cv. Siratro. However, whilst the sulphate content of all tissues declined after removing the external SO42- supply this was slowest in mature leaves. By contrast, the total S content of mature leaves declined markedly in the absence of external sulphate whilst that of both young leaves and roots increased. Furthermore, when radiolabelled SO42- was applied to abraded surfaces of mature leaves, most of the translocated label was recovered in the root following 2 d SO42- deprivation. By contrast, radiolabelled SO42-applied to young leaves was mostly retained in these tissues and not translocated.
Within 3 d of removing the SO42- supply there was a large increase in extractable APS-sulphotransferase activity in roots accompanied by a decline in nitrate reductase activity, but these effects were not seen in leaves. Five days after the removal of SO42- there was a large increase in the content of asparagine in roots.
The results are discussed in relation to the co-ordination of NO3- and SO42- uptake and assimilation and the partitioning of sulphur during S-stress
The Phoenix Deep Survey: Extremely Red Galaxies and Cluster Candidates
We present the results of a study of a sample of 375 Extremely Red Galaxies
(ERGs) in the Phoenix Deep Survey, 273 of which constitute a subsample which is
80% complete to K_s = 18.5 over an area of 1160 arcmin^2. The angular
correlation function for ERGs is estimated, and the association of ERGs with
faint radio sources explored. We find tentative evidence that ERGs and faint
radio sources are associated at z > 0.5. A new overdensity-mapping algorithm
has been used to characterize the ERG distribution, and identify a number of
cluster candidates, including a likely cluster containing ERGs at 0.5 < z < 1.
Our algorithm is also used in an attempt to probe the environments in which
faint radio sources and ERGs are associated. We find limited evidence that the
I - K_s > 4 criterion is more efficient than R - K_s > 5 at selecting dusty
