A Measurement System Experiment to Evaluate the Nosing-to-nosing Method for Measuring Dimensions of Steps
Non-uniformity of steps within a flight is a major risk factor for falls. Guidelines and requirements for uniformity of step risers and tread depths assume the measurement system provides precise dimensional values. The state-of-the-art measurement system is a relatively new method, known as the nosing-to-nosing method. It involves measuring the distance between the noses of adjacent steps and the angle formed with the horizontal. From these measurements, the effective riser height and tread depth are calculated. This study was undertaken for the purpose of evaluating the measurement system to determine how much of total measurement variability comes from the step variations versus that due to repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) associated with the measurers. Using an experimental design quality control professionals call a measurement system experiment, two measurers measured all steps in six randomly selected flights, and repeated the process on a subsequent day. After marking each step in a flight in three lateral places (left, center, and right), the measurers took their measurement. This process yielded 774 values of riser height and 672 values of tread depth. Results of applying the Gage R&R ANOVA procedure in Minitab software indicated that the R&R contribution to riser height variability was 1.42%; and to tread depth was 0.50%. All remaining variability was attributed to actual step-to-step differences. These results may be compared with guidelines used in the automobile industry for measurement systems that consider R&R less than 1% as an acceptable measurement system; and R&R between 1% and 9% as acceptable depending on the application, the cost of the measuring device, cost of repair, or other factors
2-Phenylnaphtho[1,8-de][1,3,2]diazaborinane
The title compound, C16H13BN2, is one compound in a series of diazaborinanes featuring substitution at the 1, 2 and 3 positions in the nitrogen–boron heterocycle. The title compound is slightly distorted from planarity, with a dihedral angle of 9.0 (5)° between the mean planes of the naphthalene system and the benzene ring. The m-carbon atom of the benzene ring exhibits the greatest deviation of 0.164 (2) Å from the 19-atom mean plane defined by all non-H atoms. The two N—B—C—C torsion angles are 6.0 (3) and 5.6 (3)°. In the crystal, molecules are linked by π–π interactions into columns, with a distance of 3.92 (3) Å between the naphthalene ring centroids. Adjacent π-stacked columns, co-linear with the b-axis, are linked by C—H⋯π interactions
The influence of shyness on the use of Facebook in an undergraduate sample
Researchers have suggested that individual differences will help to determine which online communication tools appeal to and are used by different individuals. With respect to the domain of computer-mediated communication, shyness is a particular personality trait of interest, as forums provide opportunities for social interactions that shy individuals might otherwise avoid. The present study investigated the personality trait of shyness and its relation with certain features of an online communication tool (Facebook). We hypothesized that shyness would be significantly related to the quantity of time spent on Facebook, the number of contacts added to one’s Facebook profile, and attitudes toward Facebook. Our findings supported that shyness was significantly positively correlated with the time spent on Facebook and having favorable attitudes toward the social networking site. Furthermore, shyness was significantly negatively correlated with the number of Facebook “Friends.” Limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research are addressed
The production of Newcastle disease virus-like particles in Nicotiana benthamiana as potential vaccines
DATA AVAILABILITY STATEMENT : The datasets presented in this study can be found in online
repositories. The names of the repository/repositories and accession
number(s) can be found in the article/Supplementary Material.Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious viral respiratory and neurological
disease that has a severe impact on poultry production worldwide. In the present
study, an expression platform was established for the transient production in
N.bethamiana of ND virus-like particles (VLPs) for use as vaccines against ND.
The expression of the ND Fusion (F) and/or Hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN)
proteins of a genotype VII.2 strain formed ND VLPs in planta as visualized under the
transmission electron microscope, and HN-containing VLPs agglutinated chicken
erythrocytes with hemagglutination (HA) titres of up to 13 log2.The
immunogenicity of the partially-purified ND VLPs was confirmed in specificpathogen-
free White leghorn chickens. Birds receiving a single intramuscular
immunization with 1024 HA units (10 log2) of the F/HN ND VLPs administered
with 20% [v/v] Emulsigen®-P adjuvant, seroconverted after 14 days with F- and
HN-specific antibodies at ELISA titres of 5705.17 and HI geometric mean titres
(GMTs) of 6.2 log2, respectively. Furthermore, these ND-specific antibodies
successfully inhibited viral replication in vitro of two antigenically closely-related
ND virus isolates, with virus-neutralization test GMTs of 3.47 and 3.4, respectively.
Plant-produced ND VLPs have great potential as antigen-matched vaccines for
poultry and other avian species that are highly immunogenic, cost-effective, and
facilitate prompt updating to ensure improved protection against emerging ND
field viruses. The National Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the National Research Foundation (NRF), the National Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the University of Pretoria (Postdoctoral and Research Fellowship Programme), the International Veterinary and Vaccinology Network (IVVN) and DEFRA-funded project APHAEXSE2214.http://www.frontiersin.org/Plant_Scienceam2024Production Animal StudiesSDG-03:Good heatlh and well-bein
Dvopulsni sustav za isporuku amoksicilina: Pokušaj sprečavanja bakterijske rezistencije na antibiotike
Bearing in mind the present scenario of the increasing biological tolerance of bacteria against antibiotics, a time controlled two pulse dosage form of amoxicillin was developed. The compression coating inlay tablet approach was used to deliver the drug in two pulses to different parts of the GIT after a well defined lag time between the two releases. This was made possible by formulating a core containing one of the two drug fractions (intended to be delivered as the second pulse), which was spray coated with a suspension of ethyl cellulose and a hydrophilic but water insoluble agent as a pore former (microcrystalline cellulose). Coating of 1 up to 5 % (m/m) was applied over the core tablet, giving a corresponding lag of 3, 5, 7 and 12 h. Increasing the level of coating led to retardation of the water uptake capacity of the core, leading to prolongation of the lag time. Microcrystalline cellulose was used as a hydrophilic but water insoluble porosity modifier in the barrier layer, varying the concentration of which had a significant effect on shortening or prolongation of the lag time. This coated system was further partially compression coated with the remaining drug fraction (to be released as the first immediate release pulse) with a disintegrant, giving a final tablet. The core tablet and the final two pulse inlay tablet were further investigated for the in vitro performance.
The influence of implicit theories and offender characteristics on judgements of sexual offenders: a moderated mediation analysis
The psychological factors underpinning responses to sexual offenders are beginning to receive increased empirical scrutiny. One such factor is offender representativeness, which refers to the extent to which a given offender example matches a stereotype of those who are typically labelled as 'sexual offenders'. Using a sample of 252 community members, we examined the role of implicit theories about sexual offenders (i.e., whether sexual offending is seen as fixed or malleable) in mediating the relationship between affective responses to sexual offenders and policy outcome judgements. We found support for this mediating effect, although this was eliminated when participants were presented with a 'non-representative' offender vignette. We argue that the relationship between affective responses and policy judgements is contingent on the activation of a sexual offender stereotype, and that this link can be disrupted via the increased presentation of non-stereotypical case examples. Implications for public debate and professional practice are discussed
Spatial and Functional Relationships Among Pol V-Associated Loci, Pol IV-Dependent siRNAs, and Cytosine Methylation in the \u3cem\u3eArabidopsis\u3c/em\u3e Epigenome
Multisubunit RNA polymerases IV and V (Pols IV and V) mediate RNA-directed DNA methylation and transcriptional silencing of retrotransposons and heterochromatic repeats in plants. We identified genomic sites of Pol V occupancy in parallel with siRNA deep sequencing and methylcytosine mapping, comparing wild-type plants with mutants defective for Pol IV, Pol V, or both Pols IV and V. Approximately 60% of Pol V-associated regions encompass regions of 24-nucleotide (nt) siRNA complementarity and cytosine methylation, consistent with cytosine methylation being guided by base-pairing of Pol IV-dependent siRNAs with Pol V transcripts. However, 27% of Pol V peaks do not overlap sites of 24-nt siRNA biogenesis or cytosine methylation, indicating that Pol V alone does not specify sites of cytosine methylation. Surprisingly, the number of methylated CHH motifs, a hallmark of RNA-directed de novo methylation, is similar in wild-type plants and Pol IV or Pol V mutants. In the mutants, methylation is lost at 50%–60% of the CHH sites that are methylated in the wild type but is gained at new CHH positions, primarily in pericentromeric regions. These results indicate that Pol IV and Pol V are not required for cytosine methyltransferase activity but shape the epigenome by guiding CHH methylation to specific genomic sites
