An Annotated Checklist of Wisconsin Mutillidae (Hymenoptera)
A survey of Wisconsin velvet ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and two years of field work (2001-2002) yielded 28 species in three subfamilies. Of these, 23 species (representing 82% of the Wisconsin fauna and a 460% increase in the known species richness) are new state species records, having not previously been recorded in the published literature from the state. The known distributions of all Wisconsin species are reported by region and county, along with pertinent phenological, natural history, and other collection information, when known
An analysis of atmospheric entry trajectories for manned and unmanned missions to the planet Venus
A unified atmospheric density model is presented for the planet Venus, and this model is compatible with Russian and American data obtained during the 1967 Venus launch opportunity. Trajectory characteristics involved in atmospheric entry are discussed with reference to roll-control modulation and entry corridor. Subsequent to a trajectory-oriented discussion of potential Venus mission characteristics, a parametric analysis of manned and unmanned vehicle entry trajectories into the Venusian atmosphere is presented. A sensitivity analysis with reference to atmospheric density deviations is included to show the dependence of corridor depth on the atmospheric density profile
A fresh perspective on canonical extensions for bounded lattices
This paper presents a novel treatment of the canonical extension of a bounded
lattice, in the spirit of thetheory of natural dualities. At the level of
objects, this can be achieved by exploiting the topological representation due
to M. Ploscica, and the canonical extension can be obtained in the same manner
as can be done in the distributive case by exploiting Priestley duality. To
encompass both objects and morphismsthe Ploscica representation is replaced by
a duality due to Allwein and Hartonas, recast in the style of Ploscica's paper.
This leads to a construction of canonical extension valid for all bounded
lattices,which is shown to be functorial, with the property that the canonical
extension functor decomposes asthe composite of two functors, each of which
acts on morphisms by composition, in the manner of hom-functors
Magnetic and electric phase control in epitaxial EuTiO from first principles
We propose a design strategy - based on the coupling of spins, optical
phonons, and strain - for systems in which magnetic (electric) phase control
can be achieved by an applied electric (magnetic) field. Using first-principles
density-functional theory calculations, we present a realization of this

Ferroelectricity in the Dion-Jacobson CsBiNbO from first principles
We have studied ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson CsBiNbO from first
principles. Using group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density
functional calculations of the total energy and phonons, we perform a
systematic study of the energy surface around a paraelectric prototypic phase.
Our results suggest that CsBiNbO is a ferroelectric with a polarization
of P=40C cm. We propose further experiments to clarify this
point
A DSMC investigation of gas flows in micro-channels with bends
Pressure-driven, implicit boundary conditions are implemented in an open source direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) solver, and benchmarked against simple micro-channel flow cases found in the literature. DSMC simulations are then carried out of gas flows for varying degrees of rarefaction along micro-channels with both one and two ninety-degree bends. The results are compared to those from the equivalent straight micro-channel geometry. Away from the immediate bend regions, the pressure and Mach number profiles do not differ greatly from those in straight channels, indicating that there are no significant losses introduced when a bend is added to a micro-channel geometry. It is found that the inclusion of a bend in a micro-channel can increase the amount of mass that a channel can carry, and that adding a second bend produces a greater mass flux enhancement. This increase happens within a small range of Knudsen number (0.02 Knin 0.08). Velocity slip and shear stress profiles at the channel walls are presented for the Knudsen showing the largest mass flux enhancement
Probing photoinduced spin states in spin-crossover molecules with neutron scattering
We report a neutron scattering investigation of the spin crossover compound \rm [Fe(ptz)6](BF4)2 which undergoes an abrupt thermal spin-transition from high-spin (HS) S=2 to low-spin (LS) S=0 around 135 K. The HS magnetic state can be restored at low temperature under blue/green light irradiation. We have developed a specially designed optical setup for neutron scattering to address the magnetic properties of the light-induced HS state. By using neutron diffraction, we demonstrate that significant HS/LS ratios (of up to 60 \%) can be obtained with this experimental setup on a sample volume considered large (400 mg), while a complete recovery of the LS state is achieved using near infrared light. With inelastic neutron scattering (INS) we have observed, for the first time in a photo-induced phase, magnetic transitions arising from the metastable HS S=2 state split by crystal field and spin-orbit coupling. We interpret the INS data assuming a spin-only model with a zero-field splitting (ZFS) of the S=2 ground state. The obtained parameters are D \approx -1.28 \pm 0.03 meV and |E| \approx 0.08 \pm 0.03 meV. The present results show that in situ magnetic inelastic neutron scattering investigations on a broad range of photomagnetic materials are now possible
Adaptive driver modelling in ADAS to improve user acceptance: A study using naturalistic data
Accurate understanding of driver behaviour is crucial for future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. For user acceptance it is important that ADAS respect individual driving styles and adapt accordingly. Using data collected during a naturalistic driving study carried out at the University of Southampton, we assess existing models of driver acceleration and speed choice during car following and when cornering. We observe that existing models of driver behaviour that specify a preferred inter-vehicle spacing in car-following situations appear to be too prescriptive, with a wide range of acceptable spacings visible in the naturalistic data. Bounds on lateral acceleration during cornering from the literature are visible in the data, but appear to be influenced by the minimum cornering radii specified in design codes for UK roadway geometry. This analysis of existing driver models is used to suggest a small set of parameters that are sufficient to characterise driver behaviour in car-following and curve driving, which may be estimated in real-time by an ADAS to adapt to changing driver behaviour. Finally, we discuss applications to adaptive ADAS with the objectives of improving road safety and promoting eco-driving, and suggest directions for future researc
