    Embodied carbon and construction cost differences between Hong Kong and Melbourne buildings

    Limiting the amount of embodied carbon in buildings can help minimize the damaging impacts of global warming through lower upstream emission of CO2. This study empirically investigates the embodied carbon footprint of new-build and refurbished buildings in both Hong Kong and Melbourne to determine the embodied carbon profile and its relationship to both embodied energy and construction cost. The Hong Kong findings suggest that mean embodied carbon for refurbished buildings is 33-39% lower than new-build projects, and the cost for refurbished buildings is 22-50% lower than new-build projects (per square metre of floor area). The Melbourne findings, however, suggest that mean embodied carbon for refurbished buildings is 4% lower than new-build projects, and the cost for refurbished buildings is 24% higher than new-build projects (per square metre of floor area). Embodied carbon ranges from 645-1,059 kgCO2e/m2 for new-build and 294-655 kgCO2e/m2 for refurbished projects in Hong Kong, and 1,138-1,705 kgCO2e/m2 for new-build and 900-1,681 kgCO2e/m2 for refurbished projects in Melbourne. The reasons behind these locational discrepancies are explored and critiqued. Overall, a very strong linear relationship between embodied energy and construction cost in both cities was found and can be used to predict the former, given the latter

    A fresh perspective on canonical extensions for bounded lattices

    This paper presents a novel treatment of the canonical extension of a bounded lattice, in the spirit of thetheory of natural dualities. At the level of objects, this can be achieved by exploiting the topological representation due to M. Ploscica, and the canonical extension can be obtained in the same manner as can be done in the distributive case by exploiting Priestley duality. To encompass both objects and morphismsthe Ploscica representation is replaced by a duality due to Allwein and Hartonas, recast in the style of Ploscica's paper. This leads to a construction of canonical extension valid for all bounded lattices,which is shown to be functorial, with the property that the canonical extension functor decomposes asthe composite of two functors, each of which acts on morphisms by composition, in the manner of hom-functors

    Feedback-controlled transport in an interacting colloidal system

    Based on dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) we consider a non-equilibrium system of interacting colloidal particles driven by a constant tilting force through a periodic, symmetric "washboard" potential. We demonstrate that, despite of pronounced spatio-temporal correlations, the particle current can be reversed by adding suitable feedback control terms to the DDFT equation of motion. We explore two distinct control protocols with time delay, focussing on either the particle positions or the density profile.     Variable-Frequency QPOs from the Galactic Microquasar GRS 1915+105

    We show that the galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 exhibits quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) whose frequency varies continuously from 1-15 Hz, during spectrally hard dips when the source is in a flaring state. We report here analyses of simultaneous energy spectra and power density spectra at 4 s intervals. The energy spectrum is well fit at each time step by an optically thick accretion disk plus power law model, while the power density spectrum consists of a varying red noise component plus the variable frequency QPO. The features of both spectra are strongly correlated with one another. The 1-15 Hz QPOs appear when the power law component becomes hard and intense, and themselves have an energy spectrum consistent with the power law component (with root mean square amplitudes as high as 10%). The frequency of the oscillations, however, is most strikingly correlated with the parameters of the thermal disk component. The tightest correlation is between QPO frequency and the disk X-ray flux.     C-erbB2 mRNA expression in human breast tumours: comparison with c-erbB2 DNA amplification and correlation with prognosis.

    In this study, we have investigated the expression of the proto-oncogene c-erbB2 in a total of 70 human primary breast tumours. In agreement with other workers, we observed c-erbB2 gene amplification in 17.5% of the tumours studied. In addition, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of c-erbB2 mRNA expression in the tumours using RNase mapping and in situ hybridisation techniques. Our results indicated a more frequent (30%) overexpression of c-erbB2 mRNA, which was associated only with breast carcinomas of a ductal origin. Furthermore, analysis of the c-erbB2 mRNA gene locus in the same tumours demonstrated that enhanced c-erbB2 expression could occur in the presence or absence of gene amplification, suggesting that additional molecular mechanisms may result in overexpression of c-erbB2 mRNA in human mammary tumours. In situ hybridisation showed that elevated levels of c-erbB2 mRNA were specific to malignant cells within the breast tumour. Analysis of the association between c-erbB2 mRNA overexpression and clinicopathological factors revealed a significant correlation with poor tumour grade, but not with steroid receptor status or patient menopausal status. No significant correlation was observed between overexpression of c-erbB2 mRNA and early disease recurrence in our group of patients, although there was a definite trend towards poorer prognosis

    Assignment of the lattice modes in TCNQ0 single crystals

    A complete assignment of the six librational modes of the TCNQ0 crystal has been made employing both polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements and lattice dynamical calculations. Agreement between theory and experiment is good and modes at 40.5, 74.5, and 96 cm-1 are assigned as Ag active and those at 63, 75.5, and 104 cm-1 are Bg active. The lattice modes are found to be clearly separated from the molecular modes. The study emphasizes the importance of crystal optics and quality in the measurement of the polarized Raman spectra of biaxial crystals.
