Keep it simple: ranking health states yields values similar to cardinal measurement approaches
Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between ordinal and cardinal valuation of health states.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We analyzed rank, visual analog scale (VAS), and time trade-off (TTO) responses for 52 health states defined using the EQ-5D classification system developed by the EuroQol Group. We analyzed 179,431 responses from 11,483 subjects in eight countries: Slovenia, Argentina, Denmark, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. We first compared responses across methods by frequency of ties and values below dead. Ordinal associations between methods were evaluated using Spearman's correlation and Kendall's tau. Next, we estimated numerical values from rank responses using country-specific conditional logit models. After anchoring predicted values on a common scale, we further investigated the cardinal relationships between rank, VAS, and TTO-based values using Pearson's rho and quadratic regression.
RESULTS: For each country, rank responses are less likely than TTO responses to be tied and to indicate that states are worse than dead. In all countries, rank responses show a strong linear correlation with both TTO (Pearson's rho=0.88-0.99) and VAS (rho=0.91-0.98) responses. However, rank-ba
Review article: MHD wave propagation near coronal null points of magnetic fields
We present a comprehensive review of MHD wave behaviour in the neighbourhood
of coronal null points: locations where the magnetic field, and hence the local
Alfven speed, is zero. The behaviour of all three MHD wave modes, i.e. the
Alfven wave and the fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves, has been investigated
in the neighbourhood of 2D, 2.5D and (to a certain extent) 3D magnetic null
points, for a variety of assumptions, configurations and geometries. In
general, it is found that the fast magnetoacoustic wave behaviour is dictated
by the Alfven-speed profile. In a plasma, the fast wave is focused
towards the null point by a refraction effect and all the wave energy, and thus
current density, accumulates close to the null point. Thus, null points will be
locations for preferential heating by fast waves. Independently, the Alfven
wave is found to propagate along magnetic fieldlines and is confined to the
fieldlines it is generated on. As the wave approaches the null point, it
spreads out due to the diverging fieldlines. Eventually, the Alfven wave
accumulates along the separatrices (in 2D) or along the spine or fan-plane (in
3D). Hence, Alfven wave energy will be preferentially dissipated at these
locations. It is clear that the magnetic field plays a fundamental role in the
propagation and properties of MHD waves in the neighbourhood of coronal null
points. This topic is a fundamental plasma process and results so far have also
lead to critical insights into reconnection, mode-coupling, quasi-periodic

Assessing the number of users who are excluded by domestic heating controls

This Article is also referred to as: "Assessing the 'Design Exclusion' of Heating Controls at a Low-Cost, Low-Carbon Housing Development". - Copyright @ 2011 Taylor & FrancisSpace heating accounts for almost 60% of the energy delivered to housing which in turn accounts for nearly 27% of the total UK's carbon emissions. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of heating control design on the degree of ‘user exclusion’. This was calculated using the Design Exclusion Calculator, developed by the Engineering Design Centre at the University of Cambridge. To elucidate the capability requirements of the system, a detailed hierarchical task analysis was produced, due to the complexity of the overall task. The Exclusion Calculation found that the current design placed excessive demands upon the capabilities of at least 9.5% of the UK population over 16 years old, particularly in terms of ‘vision’, ‘thinking’ and ‘dexterity’ requirements. This increased to 20.7% for users over 60 years old. The method does not account for the level of numeracy and literacy and so the true exclusion may be higher. Usability testing was conducted to help validate the results which indicated that 66% of users at a low-carbon housing development could not programme their controls as desired. Therefore, more detailed analysis of the cognitive demands placed upon the users is required to understand where problems within the programming process occur. Further research focusing on this cognitive interaction will work towards a solution that may allow users to behave easily in a more sustainable manner
3D MHD Coronal Oscillations About a Magnetic Null Point: Application of WKB Theory
This paper is a demonstration of how the WKB approximation can be used to
help solve the linearised 3D MHD equations. Using Charpit's Method and a
Runge-Kutta numerical scheme, we have demonstrated this technique for a
potential 3D magnetic null point, .
Under our cold plasma assumption, we have considered two types of wave
propagation: fast magnetoacoustic and Alfv\'en waves. We find that the fast
magnetoacoustic wave experiences refraction towards the magnetic null point,
and that the effect of this refraction depends upon the Alfv\'en speed profile.
The wave, and thus the wave energy, accumulates at the null point. We have
found that current build up is exponential and the exponent is dependent upon
. Thus, for the fast wave there is preferential heating at the null
point. For the Alfv\'en wave, we find that the wave propagates along the
fieldlines. For an Alfv\'en wave generated along the fan-plane, the wave
accumulates along the spine. For an Alfv\'en wave generated across the spine,
the value of determines where the wave accumulation will occur:
fan-plane (), along the axis () or along the
axis (). We have shown analytically that currents build up
exponentially, leading to preferential heating in these areas. The work
described here highlights the importance of understanding the magnetic topology

Analycity and smoothing effect for the coupled system of equations of Korteweg - de Vries type with a single point singularity

model to describe the strong interaction of weakly nonlinear long waves, has
analyticity in time and smoothing effect up to real analyticity if the initial
data only has a single point singularity at $x=0.
Hydrogen peroxide regulation of endothelial exocytosis by inhibition of N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor
Although an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can damage the vasculature, low concentrations of ROS mediate intracellular signal transduction pathways. We hypothesized that hydrogen peroxide plays a beneficial role in the vasculature by inhibiting endothelial exocytosis that would otherwise induce vascular inflammation and thrombosis. We now show that endogenous H2O2 inhibits thrombin-induced exocytosis of granules from endothelial cells. H2O2 regulates exocytosis by inhibiting N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor (NSF), a protein that regulates membrane fusion events necessary for exocytosis. H2O2 decreases the ability of NSF to hydrolyze adenosine triphosphate and to disassemble the soluble NSF attachment protein receptor complex. Mutation of NSF cysteine residue C264T eliminates the sensitivity of NSF to H2O2, suggesting that this cysteine residue is a redox sensor for NSF. Increasing endogenous H2O2 levels in mice decreases exocytosis and platelet rolling on venules in vivo. By inhibiting endothelial cell exocytosis, endogenous H2O2 may protect the vasculature from inflammation and thrombosis
On-line automatic controller tuning of a multivariable grinding mill circuit using Bayesian optimisation
Process controllers are abundant in the industry and require attentive tuning to achieve optimal performance. While tuning controllers by the most primitive method of trial and error is possible, it often leads to sub-optimal performance if not conducted by a skilled expert. It is much more appealing to develop an on-line, sample efficient, automated tuner which can optimise the performance of a given controller to the task at hand. The automatic tuning procedure can be conducted during commissioning, when poor controller performance is observed or when process conditions have changed. The problem statement is formulated as the minimisation of an objective function constructed to achieve the desired controller performance. In this context the automatic tuning problem of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) controllers is considered within the framework of Bayesian optimisation and applied in simulation to an ore milling circuit with three manipulated and three controlled variables. The automatic tuning problem of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) controllers is considered within the framework of Bayesian optimisation and applied in simulation to a bulk tailings treatment process. The aim is to develop a model free, on-line, automatic tuner which can optimise the performance of a given controller to the task at hand. The automatic tuning procedure can be conducted during commissioning, when poor controller performance is observed or when the process has changed. Simulations indicate that the method is able to locate the optimal tuning parameters for the bulk tailings treatment process as compared to a de-coupled controller developed from a model of the process. The runaway binary LP 400−22 is leaving the Galaxy
We present optical spectroscopy, astrometry, radio and X-ray observations of the runaway binary LP 400−22. We refine the orbital parameters of the system based on our new radial velocity observations. Our parallax data indicate that LP 400−22 is significantly more distant (3σ lower limit of 840 pc) than initially predicted. LP 400−22 has a tangential velocity in excess of 830 km s^−1; it is unbound to the Galaxy. Our radio and X-ray observations fail to detect a recycled millisecond pulsar companion, indicating that LP 400−22 is a double white dwarf system. This essentially rules out a supernova runaway ejection mechanism. Based on its orbit, a Galactic Centre origin is also unlikely. However, its orbit intersects the locations of several globular clusters; dynamical interactions between LP 400−22 and other binary stars or a central black hole in a dense cluster could explain the origin of this unusual binary
