A Complex Chemical Potential: Signature of Decay in a Bose-Einstein Condensate
We explore the zero-temperature statics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate
in which a Feshbach resonance creates a coupling to a second condensate
component of quasi-bound molecules. Using a variational procedure to find the
equation of state, the appearance of this binding is manifest in a collapsing
ground state, where only the molecular condensate is present up to some
critical density. Further, an excited state is seen to reproduce the usual
low-density atomic condensate behavior in this system, but the molecular
component is found to produce an underlying decay, quantified by the imaginary
part of the chemical potential. Most importantly, the unique decay rate
dependencies on density () and on scattering length () can be measured in experimental tests of this theory.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
FRESH AIR:An implementation research project funded through Horizon 2020 exploring the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases in low-resource settings
This protocol describes FRESH AIR, an implementation science project exploring how to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic lung diseases in contexts with limited healthcare resources. It consists of inter-related studies that take place in four countries that are part of the International Primary Care Respiratory Group's (IPCRG) global network: Uganda, the Kyrgyz Republic, Vietnam and Greece. The project has been funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 research programme and runs from October 2015 until September 2018
Recommendations for Safe Separation Distances from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) Using a Heat-Flux-Based Analytical Approach (Abridged)
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) was requested to provide computational modeling to support the establishment of a safe separation distance surrounding the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The two major objectives of the study were 1) establish a methodology based on thermal flux to determine safe separation distances from the Kennedy Space Center's (KSC's) Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) with large numbers of solid propellant boosters containing hazard division 1.3 classification propellants, in case of inadvertent ignition; and 2) apply this methodology to the consideration of housing eight 5-segment solid propellant boosters in the VAB. The results of the study are contained in this report
Predictors of Gains During Inpatient Rehabilitation in Patients with Stroke- A Review.
Stroke remains a major cause of disability. The cost of stroke rehabilitation is substantial. Understanding the factors that predict response to inpatient stroke rehabilitation may be useful, for example, to best individualize the content of therapy, or to maximize the efficiency with which resources are directed. This review reviewed the literature and found that numerous variables were associated with outcome after inpatient stroke rehabilitation. The strongest evidence exists for factors such as age, stroke subtype, nutritional status, psychosocial factors such as living with family prior to stroke or presence of a caregiver. Functional status on admission, urinary incontinence, post-stroke infection, and aphasia each can also impact prognosis. Strengths and weaknesses of cited studies are considered in an attempt to inform design of future studies examining the factors that predict response to inpatient rehabilitation after stroke
Magnetically Robust Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Heavy Fermion Systems with f^2-Configuration: Competition between Crystalline-Electric-Field and Kondo-Yosida Singlets
We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises
around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the
f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by
using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic
temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected
by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the
QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the
vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the NFL is robust against
the magnetic field, at an observable temperature range T > T_F^*, up to H_z^*
which is far larger than T_F^* and less than min(T_{K2}, $Delta).Comment: 8 pages, 9 figur
Isoferritins in acute leukaemia.
Leucocytes containing a high proportion of blast cells were obtained from 11 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia, and leucocytes were also obtained from 2 normal subjects. Ferritin was partially purified from leucocyte extracts and subjected to anion-exchange chromatography and isoelectric focusing. The Fe content of leucocyte ferritin was low, and in all but one case the preparations contained isoferritins corresponding to those found in normal tissues or serum. Only some of the preparations contained the relatively acidic isoferritins which have been described as "carcinofoetal", but which are also present in normal heart and kidney. Ferritin from one patient contained isoferritins of lower isoelectric point than heart ferritin. These results show that there does not appear to be any specific isoelectric focusing pattern for leukaemic cells, and that assays for acidic isoferritins are unlikely to be of use in the diagnosis of leukaemia and in monitoring treatment. However, the very acidic protein found in one preparation suggests that the search for abnormal subunits of ferritin may be fruitful in acute leukaemia
Introduction, dispersal and naturalisation of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in British estuaries, 1980-2010
The introduction of the Manila clam into British coastal waters in the 1980s was contested by conservation agencies. While recognizing the value of the clam for aquaculture, the government decided that it posed no invasive risk, as British sea temperatures would prevent naturalization. This proved incorrect. Here we establish the pattern of introduction and spread of the species over the first 30 years of its presence in Britain. We report archival research on the sequence of licensed introductions and examine their relationship in time and space to the appearance of wild populations as revealed in the literature and by field surveys. By 2010 the species had naturalized in at least 11 estuaries in southern England. These included estuaries with no history of licensed introduction. In these cases activities such as storage of catch before market or deliberate unlicensed introduction represent the probable mechanisms of dispersal. In any event naturalization is not an inevitable consequence of introduction and the chances of establishment over the period in question were finely balanced. Consequently in Britain the species is not currently aggressively invasive and appears not to present significant risk to indigenous diversity or ecosystem function. However it is likely to gradually continue its spread should sea surface temperatures rise as predicted
Selforganized 3-band structure of the doped fermionic Ising spin glass
The fermionic Ising spin glass is analyzed for arbitrary filling and for all
temperatures. A selforganized 3-band structure of the model is obtained in the
magnetically ordered phase. Deviation from half filling generates a central
nonmagnetic band, which becomes sharply separated at T=0 by (pseudo)gaps from
upper and lower magnetic bands. Replica symmetry breaking effects are derived
for several observables and correlations. They determine the shape of the
3-band DoS, and, for given chemical potential, influence the fermion filling
strongly in the low temperature regime.Comment: 13 page
