Coherent phenomena in mesoscopic systems
A mesoscopic system of cylindrical geometry made of a metal or a
semiconductor is shown to exhibit features of a quantum coherent state. It is
shown that magnetostatic interaction can play an important role in mesoscopic
systems leading to an ordered ground state. The temperature below the
system exhibits long-range order is determined. The self-consistent mean field
approximation of the magnetostatic interaction is performed giving the
effective Hamiltonian from which the self-sustaining currents can be obtained.
The relation of quantum coherent state in mesoscopic cylinders to other

Partners At Care Transitions (PACT). Exploring older peoples’ experiences of transitioning from hospital to home in the UK: protocol for an observation and interview study of older people and their families to understand patient experience and involvement in care at transitions
Introduction: Lengths of hospital inpatient stays have reduced. This benefits patients, who prefer to be at home, and hospitals, which can treat more people when stays are shorter. Patients may, however, leave hospital sicker, with ongoing care needs. The transition period from hospital to home, can be risky, particularly for older patients with complex health and social needs. Improving patient experience, especially through greater patient involvement, may improve outcomes for patients and is a key indicator of care quality and safety. In this research we aim to: capture the experiences of older patients and their families during the transition from hospital to home; and identify opportunities for greater patient involvement in care, particularly where this contributes to greater individual- and organisational-level resilience. Methods and Analysis: A ‘focused ethnography’ comprising observations, ‘Go-Along’ and semi-structured interviews will be used to capture patient and carer experiences during different points in the care transition from admission to 90 days after discharge. We will recruit 30 patients and their carers from six hospital departments across two NHS Trusts. Analysis of observations and interviews will use a Framework approach to identify themes to understand the experience of transitions and generate ideas about how patients could be more actively involved in their care. This will include exploring what ‘good’ care at transitions look like and seeking out examples of success, as well as recommendations for improvement. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval was received from the NHS Research Ethics Committee in Wales. The research findings will add to a growing body of knowledge about patient experience of transitions, in particular providing insight into the experiences of patients and carers throughout the transitions process, in ‘real time’. Importantly, the data will be used to inform the development of a patient-centred intervention to improve the quality and safety of transitions
‘Smoke gets in your eyes . . .’: the criminalisation of smoking in enclosed public places, the harm principle and the limits of the criminal sanction
Legislation has been enacted in both England/Wales and Scotland which criminalises smoking in certain places. This paper uses these prohibitions as a way of exploring two prominent theories of criminalisation which were employed in the parliamentary debates on the legislation, namely legal paternalism and the liberal ‘harm principle’. The paper argues that the creation of these offences cannot be justified by paternalism, and that the risk of harm to non-smokers from ‘passive smoking’ is a preferable justification. This latter rationale could be used in support of more extensive smoking prohibitions in the future. The paper recognises the desire of many to limit the use of the criminal sanction and concludes by suggesting that unwarranted criminalisation can only be avoided if legislatures proposing new offences clearly articulate their reasons for believing that the criminal law is the best mechanism for reducing or deterring the conduct at issue, and demonstrate that the behaviour cannot adequately be deterred by non-criminal measures. Fermi Surface of the Electron-doped Cuprate Superconductor Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4} Probed by High-Field Magnetotransport
We report on the study of the Fermi surface of the electron-doped cuprate
superconductor NdCeCuO by measuring the interlayer
magnetoresistance as a function of the strength and orientation of the applied
magnetic field. We performed experiments in both steady and pulsed magnetic
fields on high-quality single crystals with Ce concentrations of to
0.17. In the overdoped regime of we found both semiclassical
angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and Shubnikov-de Haas
(SdH) oscillations. The combined AMRO and SdH data clearly show that the
appearance of fast SdH oscillations in strongly overdoped samples is caused by
magnetic breakdown. This observation provides clear evidence for a
reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface up to the very end of the
overdoped regime at . The strength of the superlattice potential
responsible for the reconstructed Fermi surface is found to decrease with
increasing doping level and likely vanishes at the same carrier concentration
as superconductivity, suggesting a close relation between translational
symmetry breaking and superconducting pairing. A detailed analysis of the
high-resolution SdH data allowed us to determine the effective cyclotron mass
and Dingle temperature, as well as to estimate the magnetic breakdown field in
the overdoped regime.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter in a hexagonal ferromagnet
We study the order parameter symmetry in a hexagonal crystal with co-existing
superconductivity and ferromagnetism. An experimental example is provided by
carbon-based materials, such as graphite-sulfur composites, in which an
evidence of such co-existence has been recently discovered. The presence of a
non-zero magnetization in the normal phase brings about considerable changes in
the symmetry classification of superconducting states, compared to the
non-magnetic case.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe
A Robust Cross-Linking Strategy for Block Copolymer Worms Prepared via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly
A poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PGMA) chain transfer agent is chain-extended by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) statistical copolymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) with glycidyl methacrylate (GlyMA) in concentrated aqueous solution via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). A series of five free-standing worm gels is prepared by fixing the overall degree of polymerization of the core-forming block at 144 while varying its GlyMA content from 0 to 20 mol %. 1H NMR kinetics indicated that GlyMA is consumed much faster than HPMA, producing a GlyMA-rich sequence close to the PGMA stabilizer block. Temperature-dependent oscillatory rheological studies indicate that increasing the GlyMA content leads to progressively less thermoresponsive worm gels, with no degelation on cooling being observed for worms containing 20 mol % GlyMA. The epoxy groups in the GlyMA residues can be ring-opened using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in order to prepare core cross-linked worms via hydrolysis-condensation with the siloxane groups and/or hydroxyl groups on the HPMA residues. Perhaps surprisingly, 1H NMR analysis indicates that the epoxy-amine reaction and the intermolecular cross-linking occur on similar time scales. Cross-linking leads to stiffer worm gels that do not undergo degelation upon cooling. Dynamic light scattering studies and TEM analyses conducted on linear worms exposed to either methanol (a good solvent for both blocks) or anionic surfactant result in immediate worm dissociation. In contrast, cross-linked worms remain intact under such conditions, provided that the worm cores comprise at least 10 mol % GlyMA
Separation, preconcentration and determination of rare earth elements by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy
Rare earth elements, (REE), at ug g⁻¹ levels are used for studies of petrogenisis of different geological materials. For these studies, the REE must be determined precisely. An analytical program was established using an IL 200 Inductively Coupled Plasma, (ICP), spectrometer for the determination of the REE in various matrices, taking into consideration both matrix and spectral interferences, which were found to be severe in some cases. Dissolution of the sample, (0.4-1.0 g), was carried out using two methods; a microwave heated dissolution using a modified commercial microwave oven and a conventional oven heated closed pressure digestion vessel method. The results of these two methods were compared to determine the viability of using the more rapid microwave heated method. Separation of the REE from matrix elements was investigated using three cation exchange resins; Amber lite IR 120 (H), Zeocarb 225 and Dowex 50-WXS. A gradient acid elution method was established using a 15 cm by 20 mm Zeocarb 225 column. The sample was eluted with 140 ml of a 1.5 M H⁺ solution containing 0.75 M Cl⁻ and 0.75 M NO₃⁻, this fraction containing all the matrix elements. The REE were then eluted from the resin with 100 ml of 3 M HNO₃. The REE containing fraction was then reduced to 5 ml, diluted to 10 ml, and analysed for REE content. Liquid-liquid extraction methods for the separation of REE from matrix elements were investigated. It was found that the REE could be extracted synergistically from various buffered aqueous acidic media into chloroform, (CHCl₃), by hexafluoroacetylacetone, (HHFA), and quinoline. Acetylacetone, ( AcAc), was found to react with hexamethylenetetramine, (hexamine), when hexamine was used to buffer the aqueous phase during extraction procedures. The product of this reaction, 3.5-diacetyl-1.4-dihydro-2.6-dimethyl pyridine, was identified using X-ray crystallography
Spatial Correlation of Conduction Electrons in Metal with Complicated Geometry Of The Fermi Surface
The "density-density" correlation function of conduction electrons in metal
is investigated. It is shown, that the asymptotic behaviour of the CF depends
on the shape and the local geometry of the Fermi surface. In particular, the
exponent of power law which describes the damping of Friedel oscillations at
large r (-4 for an isotropic Fermi gas) is determined by local geometry of the
FS. The applications of the obtained results to calculations of the CF in a
metal near the electron topological transition and of the RKKY exchange

Exploring attitudes to edgy urban destinations: the case of Deptford, London
The role of tourists and tourism in urban development is not fully understood. Research has focused on tourism districts within city centres, but less is known about tourism in peripheral, less affluent urban districts. These areas can appeal to visitors as edgy alternatives to mainstream destinations. This study establishes who is interested in visiting and why, and it explores the underlying rationale for negative attitudes. The aims are addressed by an in-depth analysis of Deptford in South East London. This area is a relatively deprived part of a world city, albeit one that has long been earmarked as London's next cool district. The study uses a mix of different sources to analyse the case. Responses to a New York Times article on Deptford are analysed and the attitudes of actual visitors and key stakeholders are explored. The discussion includes an examination of different interpretations and attitudes towards the notion of edginess. Edginess is deemed attractive by certain audiences; something linked to a reverence for working-class life in the arts. The study concludes that, whilst edginess is a noted characteristic, what people appreciate about Deptford is its ‘distinctive ordinariness’ – its contrast with more polished and contrived urban districts
