Women in prison: Do visits from children influence inmate behavior?

The number of women in prison is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States today. Because nearly 75 percent of incarcerated women are mothers of minor children, the issue of maintaining family relations deserves special attention. This study examines child visitation and its relationship to female behavior inside the priSon If women who receive visits adjust more easily to prison life, prison administrators would be wise to note these benefits; Data was collected at a private female prison in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Information on visitation and disciplinary infractions was gathered from inmate files and visitation records at the facility. Logistic regression was used to assess the impact of child visitation on inmate behavior. The results indicate that few women receive visits from their children while in prison, and visitation was not a significant predictor of inmate misconduct

Cozad, Catherine Eileen. M.S. The University of Memphis. May 2010. Atomic-Force-Microscope Indentation of Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cells. Major Professor: Esra Roan, Ph.D. Primary rat alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cells dedifferentiate over time in culture into alveolar epithelial type I (ATI) cells. The mechanical characteristics of ATII cells measured as elastic modulus (E) could be time dependent in culture. An atomic force microscope was used to perform force indentation (F-δ) on the ATII cells, using pyramidal cantilevers with spring constant of 0.03 ± 0.01 N/m. Seven isolations of ATII cells were cultured; square regions inconfluent cultureswere studied by indentation on a one micrometer gridand estimatedto touch 3-6 cells. E values were determined from F-δ curves. Some maps of Ehadindicated regions of high and low values, presumably reflecting regions with and without nucleus. Median E value was 5.93 (Day 2) and 8.37 kPa (Day 3); significant difference was determined by a non-parametric test, p ≤ 0.001, indicating that mechanical properties of ATII cells could exhibit time dependence

The Treatment of Childhood In Autobiographies Of Twentieth Century American Women

    Get PDF
Ed. D. University of Kansas, Education 1984In order to investigate the perspectives autobiography--a formally shaped first person account of all or part of an individual's own life--brings to the study of female American childhood, over one hundred autobiographies written by American women (most were born after 1890) were surveyed, in addition to numerous works on the nature of autobiography, sex-role formation, women's history, and childhood development and history. Both the thesis and conclusion of this study is that identification and analysis of what autobiographers specify as having shaped themselves, as well as investigation into the factors that shape a particular view of self, provide data from which to draw valid inferences and generalizations about the experience of childhood, if that data is scrutinized with an awareness of its limitations. Chapters 2-5 deal with the four topics which emerged from study of the work of twentieth century American female autobiographers about the nature of childhood and follow a similar organizational pattern. Each chapter begins with a general introduction to the topic of the chapter, drawing upon a variety of autobiographies and other sources for examples. Then each chapter extensively analyzes from 2-4 autobiographies in which the main concern of the chapter is embodied. These analyses are followed by brief observations. Works extensively analyzed are as follows: Ch. 2, "Recreating the 'Feel' of Childhood"--Seven Houses: A Memoir of Time and Places by Josephine Johnson, How Dear To My Heart by Emily Kimbrough, A Quaker Childhood by Helen Whitall Thomas Flexner; Ch. 3, "Role Models"--I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Blackberry Winter by Margaret Mead; Ch. 4, "The Development of Sex Roles"--The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston, Fifth Chinese Daughter by Jade Snow Wong; Ch. 5, "Success in Leaving Home"--Looking Back by Joyce Maynard, Home to the Wilderness by Sally Carrighar, Facts of Life by Maureen Howard, The Hearthstone of My Heart by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino

Giant Salvinia, Salvinia molesta (Salviniaceae): Evaluation Of Sub-Optimum Temperatures on Survival of the Giant Salvinia Weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Integration of Management Practices with Aquatic Herbicides

Salvinia molesta is one of the world’s worst aquatic weeds and has cost Louisiana nearly $7 million worth of damage and economic impact each year. While aquatic herbicides and the biological control agent, Cyrtobagous salviniae, are the most efficacious control methods, there are limitations with each technology. Therefore, studies were conducted to evaluate insect mortality at upper and lower lethal temperatures and investigate integrated pest management (IPM) with insects and herbicides. Three Louisiana populations of C. salviniae were tested to evaluate cold tolerance and found that at 0°C, the Bayou Nicholas population was 1.3- and 1.4-times more cold tolerant at LT50 and LT90 (lethal time to kill 50 and 90% of test population) compared to the Houma and Natchitoches populations, respectively. At -5°C, the Bayou Nicholas population was 1.1- to 1.3-times more cold tolerant than the other populations. There were no differences between populations at -9°C. These findings demonstrate C. salviniae can survive at lower temperatures than previously reported. Growth chamber trials investigated the tolerance of C. salviniae at 35 to 50°C to determine impact of high temperatures on mortality. At 35°C, the LT50 was 27.5 hours of exposure, while at 40°C, the LT50 was 14.8 hours. As expected, mortality occurs more rapidly at higher temperatures (45 and 50°C). Mesocosm trials were conducted to determine optimum timing for treating S. molesta with aquatic herbicides along with integrated management techniques compared with herbicides alone. An early season (April) herbicide application alone or in combination with C. salviniae was more efficacious than a late season application with or without C. salviniae. Glyphosate + diquat was efficacious against S. molesta at both application timings. Although C. salviniae alone was capable of reducing plant biomass, higher efficacy was achieved when used in conjunction with herbicides. Insect densities were highest at 6 and 9 weeks after treatment (WAT) regardless of treatment; however, the penoxsulam + C. salviniae treatment produced the lowest insect density overall. In addition, flumioxazin was efficacious in both trials and offers an alternate mode of action to treat S. molesta

A Consideration of the Potential Side Effects of Health Insurance Coverage

    Get PDF
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is federal health care reform legislation that represents the most significant health insurance expansion since Medicare and Medicaid were created in 1965. In this dissertation, I focus on how health insurance expansion affects the supply side of health care markets as well as health expenditures. While health insurance expansion potentially increases the demand for care, it also creates uncertainty, thereby impacting health care utilization, delivery, and input decisions. In my first chapter, I examine whether changes in health insurance coverage rates impact state-level health care delivery efficiency. Health care providers may vary in the accuracy of their demand forecasts, which could lead to inefficient excess capacity. My analysis reveals an average state-level efficiency score of 61 percent, suggesting significant underutilized inputs. I also find that states with higher insurance coverage rates tend to be less efficient. In my second chapter, I develop a theoretical framework that explains how a health insurance mandate impacts hospital input levels. To empirically investigate the channels of the framework, I use a ten-year panel of data to compare Massachusetts hospitals with those in other surrounding states. The results suggest that the Massachusetts health insurance mandate significantly reduced the demand for emergency care but left overall demand unchanged. It also significantly increased capacity. The increase in capacity without a corresponding increase in overall demand suggests inefficiency. In my third chapter, I explore the relationship between state-level health insurance coverage rates and Medicaid expenditures. My empirical results suggest that state Medicaid expenditures are more responsive to private health care expenditures and population aging rather than health insurance coverage rates
