Semantic and Structural Difficulties with the Unified Modeling Language Use-Case Notation version 1.3
A case study was undertaken to examine and apply the UML use-case notation version 1.3. This study shows that the notation is open to interpretation and the semantics of the use-case relationships are confusing. The attempt to bolt on the object-oriented inheritance structure to the use-case notation is shown to cause problems with users
Implications of Hydrocarbon and Helium Gas Analyses of Springs from the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas
One hundred and three ground water samples (predominantly springs) were analyzed for headspace light hydrocarbon gases and helium. Four of the formations (Arkansas Novaculite, Bigfork Chert, Stanley Shale, and Womble) having the highest mean methane values are the only Ouachita Mountain facies to produce petroleum or exhibit marginally commercial production. This observation suggests that the mean methane values are useful as an indication of the relative hydrocarbon content of these formations Anomalous helium values are generally associated with mapped faults
LHC Search for Right-handed Neutrinos in Models
We consider right-handed neutrino pair production in generic
models. We propose a new, model-independent analysis using final states
containing a pair of same-sign muons. A key aspect of this analysis is the
reconstruction of the RH neutrino mass, which leads to a significantly improved
sensitivity. Within the model, we find that at the HL-LHC it
will be possible to probe RH neutrino masses in the range TeV.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
From a profiled diffuser to an optimized absorber
The quadratic residue diffuser was originally designed for enhanced scattering. Subsequently, however, it has been found that these diffusers can also be designed to produce exceptional absorption. This paper looks into the absorption mechanism of the one-dimensional quadratic residue diffuser. A theory for enhanced absorption is presented. Corresponding experiments have also been done to verify the theory. The usefulness of a resistive layer at the well openings has been verified. A numerical optimization was performed to obtain a better depth sequence. The results clearly show that by arranging the depths of the wells properly in one period, the absorption is considerably better than that of a quadratic residue diffuser. © 2000 Acoustical Society of America
Photoacoustic Tomography in a Rectangular Reflecting Cavity
Almost all known image reconstruction algorithms for photoacoustic and
thermoacoustic tomography assume that the acoustic waves leave the region of
interest after a finite time. This assumption is reasonable if the reflections
from the detectors and surrounding surfaces can be neglected or filtered out
(for example, by time-gating). However, when the object is surrounded by
acoustically hard detector arrays, and/or by additional acoustic mirrors, the
acoustic waves will undergo multiple reflections. (In the absence of absorption
they would bounce around in such a reverberant cavity forever). This disallows
the use of the existing free-space reconstruction techniques. This paper
proposes a fast iterative reconstruction algorithm for measurements made at the
walls of a rectangular reverberant cavity. We prove the convergence of the
iterations under a certain sufficient condition, and demonstrate the
effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm in numerical simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Simulations of Dust in Interacting Galaxies
A new Monte-Carlo radiative-transfer code, Sunrise, is used to study the
effects of dust in N-body/hydrodynamic simulations of interacting galaxies.
Dust has a profound effect on the appearance of the simulated galaxies. At peak
luminosities, about 90% of the bolometric luminosity is absorbed, and the dust
obscuration scales with luminosity in such a way that the brightness at
UV/visual wavelengths remains roughly constant. A general relationship between
the fraction of energy absorbed and the ratio of bolometric luminosity to
baryonic mass is found. Comparing to observations, the simulations are found to
follow a relation similar to the observed IRX-Beta relation found by Meurer et
al (1999) when similar luminosity objects are considered. The
highest-luminosity simulated galaxies depart from this relation and occupy the
region where local (U)LIRGs are found. This agreement is contingent on the
presence of Milky-Way-like dust, while SMC-like dust results in far too red a
UV continuum slope to match observations. The simulations are used to study the
performance of star-formation indicators in the presence of dust. The
far-infrared luminosity is found to be reliable. In contrast, the H-alpha and
far-UV luminosity suffer severely from dust attenuation, and dust corrections

Anion transporter: highly cell-type-specific expression of distinct polypeptides and transcripts in erythroid and nonerythroid cells
Affinity-purified antibodies and cDNA probes specific for the chicken erythrocyte anion transporter (also referred to as band 3) have been used to demonstrate that this protein is expressed in a highly cell- type-specific manner in the avian kidney. Indirect immunofluorescence analysis indicates that this polypeptide is present in only a small subset of total kidney cells and is predominantly localized to the proximal convoluted tubule of this organ. Chicken erythrocytes synthesize and accumulate two structurally and serologically related band 3 polypeptides. The polypeptide that accumulates in kidney membranes has an apparent molecular weight greater than either of its erythroid counterparts. This diversity is also reflected at the RNA level, as the single band 3 mRNA species detected during various stages of erythroid development is distinct in size from that found in kidney cells. Genomic DNA blot analysis suggests that both the erythroid and kidney band 3 RNAs arise from a single gene. Furthermore, of the adult tissues we have examined that are known to express ankyrin and spectrin polypeptides, only kidney accumulates detectable levels of the band 3 mRNA and polypeptide. These observations suggest that a subset of kidney cells use an anion transport mechanism analogous to that of erythrocytes and that band 3 is expressed in a noncoordinate manner with other components of the erythroid membrane skeleton in nonerythroid cells
