A laboratory investigation of the variability of cloud reflected radiance fields
A method to determine the radiative properties of complex cloud fields was developed. A Cloud field optical simulator (CFOS) was constructed to simulate the interaction of cloud fields with visible radiation. The CFOS was verified by comparing experimental results from it with calculations performed with a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model. A software library was developed to process, reduce, and display CFOS data. The CFSOS was utilized to study the reflected radiane patterns from simulated cloud fields

New method for critical failure prediction of complex systems
Rigorous analytical technique, called criticality determination methodology /or CD technique/ determines the probability that a given complex system will successfully achieve stated objectives. The CD technique identifies critical elements of the system by a failure mode and effects analysis
Bacterial Quality of Private Water Wells in Clark County, Arkansas
Most private water wells in Clark County appeared to be contaminated by bacteria, apparently entering the wells from surface water seepage. Eighteen to 24% of the wells investigated were positive for fecal contamination. Deeper wells were less often contaminated. More than one-half of the wells sampled exceeded recommended limits of inorganic chemicals for safe potable water. High concentrations of iron and manganese were most common, exceeding recommended limits in more than 40% of the well
A multi-centre cluster randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of e-cigarettes compared with usual care for smoking cessation when offered to smokers accessing homeless services: methodological challenges and experiences of collaboration.
Around 80% of people experiencing homelessness smoke. E-cigarettes (ECs) are an effective quitting aid, but they have not been widely tested in this population. Project SCeTcH aims to evaluate the offer of an EC or usual care (UC) to smokers accessing homeless centres.
A multi-centre two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT), including 32 homeless centres across Great Britain (480 participants). Randomisation includes either an EC with weekly allocations of e-liquid for 4-weeks or UC comprising very brief advice and signposting to a stop smoking service.
After year 1, 27 centres and 240 participants have been recruited and retention rates at 4- and 24- weeks are 67% and 70% respectively. Challenges include working with multiple centres with different structures, provision, and client needs; reconciling risk of bias with the practicalities of working in this sector; the ongoing impact of Covid; changing models of care and practice; and juggling the needs of different collaborators researchers and health and social care organisations
This is the first cluster RCT to assign smokers experiencing homelessness to an EC and UC intervention to measure smoking abstinence and risky smoking practices. Running trials in this population requires the need to understand the realistic needs of these individuals and services, and to work pragmatically and flexibly within the remit of the trial protocol. Ultimately, if effective, the results will be used to inform the larger scale implementation of supporting homeless centres to aid smoking cessation
Initial studies of middle and upper tropospheric stratiform clouds
The spatial and temporal occurrence of cloud layers, the development of a physical-numerical model to simulate the life cycles of tropospheric cloud layers, and the design of an observational program to study the properties of these layers are described
Mediation of Long Range Charge Transfer by Kondo Bound States
We present a theory of non-equilibrium long range charge transfer between
donor and acceptor centers in a model polymer mediated by magnetic exciton
(Kondo) bound states. Our model produces electron tunneling lengths easily
exceeding 10, as observed recently in DNA and organic charge transfer
systems. This long ranged tunneling is effective for weak to intermediate
donor-bridge coupling, and is enhanced both by weak to intermediate strength
Coulomb hole-electron attraction (through the orthogonality catastrophe) and by
coupling to local vibrational modes.Comment: Revised content (broadened scope, vibrations added), submitted to

A Study of Feature Extraction Using Divergence Analysis of Texture Features
An empirical study of texture analysis for feature extraction and classification of high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery (10 meters) is presented in terms of specific land cover types. The principal method examined is the use of spatial gray tone dependence (SGTD). The SGTD method reduces the gray levels within a moving window into a two-dimensional spatial gray tone dependence matrix which can be interpreted as a probability matrix of gray tone pairs. Haralick et al (1973) used a number of information theory measures to extract texture features from these matrices, including angular second moment (inertia), correlation, entropy, homogeneity, and energy. The derivation of the SGTD matrix is a function of: (1) the number of gray tones in an image; (2) the angle along which the frequency of SGTD is calculated; (3) the size of the moving window; and (4) the distance between gray tone pairs. The first three parameters were varied and tested on a 10 meter resolution panchromatic image of Maryville, Tennessee using the five SGTD measures. A transformed divergence measure was used to determine the statistical separability between four land cover categories forest, new residential, old residential, and industrial for each variation in texture parameters
Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials
We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a magnetic
and a quadrupolar ground doublet, and a excited triplet. Using
the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi
liquid state below a temperature varying as the triplet-doublet
splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear
magnetic susceptibility and the contribution to the linear
susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These
results may explain UBe as mixed valent with a small crossover scale

Smoking amongst adults experiencing homelessness: a systematic review of prevalence rates, interventions and the barriers and facilitators to quitting and staying quit
Background
To date, there has been no review of the research evidence examining smoking cessation among homeless adults. The current review aimed to: (i) estimate smoking prevalence in homeless populations; (ii) explore the efficacy of smoking cessation and smoking reduction interventions for homeless individuals; and (iii) describe the barriers and facilitators to smoking cessation and smoking reduction.
Method
Systematic review of peer-reviewed research. Data sources included electronic academic databases. Search terms: ‘smoking’ AND ‘homeless’ AND ‘tobacco’, including adult (18+ years) smokers accessing homeless support services.
Results
Fifty-three studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 46 USA). Data could not be meta-analysed due to large methodological inconsistencies and the lack of randomised controlled trials. Smoking prevalence ranged from 57% to 82%. Although there was no clear evidence on which cessation methods work best, layered approaches with additions to usual care seemed to offer modest enhancements in quit rates. Key barriers to cessation exist around the priority of smoking, beliefs around negative impact on mental health and substance use, and environmental influences.
Conclusions
Homeless smokers will benefit from layered interventions which support many of their competing needs. To best understand what works, future recommendations include the need for consensus on the reporting of cessation outcomes
