Synthesis of a Versatile Building Block for the Preparation of 6-N-Derivatized α-Galactosyl Ceramides: Rapid Access to Biologically Active Glycolipids
A concise route to the 6-azido-6-deoxy-α-galactosyl-phytosphingosine derivative 9 is reported. Orthogonal protection of the two amino groups allows elaboration of 9 into a range of 6-N-derivatized α-galactosyl ceramides by late-stage introduction of the acyl chain of the ceramide and the 6-N-group in the sugar head-group. AN ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF GRADES AND HOUSEBRAND LABELS IN THE RETAIL BEEF MARKET
The congruence of beef consumersÂ’ purchases with their stated preferences regarding internal fat content are examined. The role of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grades and housebrand labeling of beef in providing information to consumers is studied in the theoretical framework of search theory. The empirical results indicate that the current system of USDA grades and housebrand labels is not disseminating information regarding internal fat content effectively to consumers. Masticatory biomechanics of red and grey squirrels ( Sciurus vulgaris and Sciurus carolinensis ) modelled with multibody dynamics analysis
The process of feeding in mammals is achieved by moving the mandible relative to the cranium to bring the teeth into and out of occlusion. This process is especially complex in rodents which have a highly specialized configuration of jaw adductor muscles. Here, we used the computational technique of multi-body dynamics analysis (MDA) to model feeding in the red (Sciurus vulgaris) and grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and determine the relative contribution of each jaw-closing muscle in the generation of bite forces. The MDA model simulated incisor biting at different gapes. A series of ‘virtual ablation experiments' were performed at each gape, whereby the activation of each bilateral pair of muscles was set to zero. The maximum bite force was found to increase at wider gapes. As predicted, the superficial and anterior deep masseter were the largest contributors to bite force, but the temporalis had only a small contribution. Further analysis indicated that the temporalis may play a more important role in jaw stabilization than in the generation of bite force. This study demonstrated the ability of MDA to elucidate details of red and grey squirrel feeding biomechanics providing a complement to data gathered via in vivo experimentation
A survey of diffuse interstellar bands in the Andromeda galaxy: optical spectroscopy of M31 OB stars
We present the largest sample to-date of intermediate-resolution blue-to-red
optical spectra of B-type supergiants in M31 and undertake the first survey of
diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in this galaxy. Spectral classifications,
radial velocities and interstellar reddenings are presented for 34 stars in
three regions of M31. Radial velocities and equivalent widths are given for the
5780 and 6283 DIBs towards 11 stars. Equivalent widths are also presented for
the following DIBs detected in three sightlines in M31: 4428, 5705, 5780, 5797,
6203, 6269, 6283, 6379, 6613, 6660, and 6993. All of these M31 DIB carriers
reside in clouds at radial velocities matching those of interstellar Na I
and/or H I. The relationships between DIB equivalent widths and reddening
(E(B-V)) are consistent with those observed in the local ISM of the Milky Way.
Many of the observed sightlines show DIB strengths (per unit reddening) which
lie at the upper end of the range of Galactic values. DIB strengths per unit
reddening are found (with 68% confidence), to correlate with the interstellar
UV radiation field strength. The strongest DIBs are observed where the
interstellar UV flux is lowest. The mean Spitzer 8/24 micron emission ratio in
our three fields is slightly lower than that measured in the Milky Way, but we
identify no correlation between this ratio and the DIB strengths in M31.
Interstellar oxygen abundances derived from the spectra of three M31 H II
regions in one of the fields indicate that the average metallicity of the ISM
in that region is 12 + log[O/H] = 8.54 +- 0.18, which is approximately equal to
the value in the solar neighbourhood
The chloroplast land plant phylogeny: analyses employing better-fitting tree- and site-heterogeneous composition models
The colonization of land by descendants of charophyte green algae marked a turning point in Earth history that enabled the development of the diverse terrestrial ecosystems we see today. Early land plants diversified into three gametophyte-dominant lineages, namely the hornworts, liverworts, and mosses, collectively known as bryophytes, and a sporophyte-dominant lineage, the vascular plants, or tracheophytes. In recent decades, the prevailing view of evolutionary relationships among these four lineages has been that the tracheophytes were derived from a bryophyte ancestor. However, recent phylogenetic evidence has suggested that bryophytes are monophyletic, and thus that the first split among land plants gave rise to the lineages that today we recognize as the bryophytes and tracheophytes. We present a phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast protein-coding data that also supports the monophyly of bryophytes. This newly compiled data set consists of 83 chloroplast genes sampled across 30 taxa that include chlorophytes and charophytes, including four members of the Zygnematophyceae, and land plants, that were sampled following a balanced representation of the main bryophyte and tracheophyte lineages. Analyses of non-synonymous site nucleotide data and amino acid translation data result in congruent phylogenetic trees showing the monophyly of bryophytes, with the Zygnematophyceae as the charophyte group most closely related to land plants.
