A Possible Massive Asteroid Belt Around zeta Lep
We have used the Keck I telescope to image at 11.7 microns and 17.9 microns
the dust emission around zeta Lep, a main sequence A-type star at 21.5 pc from
the Sun with an infrared excess. The excess is at most marginally resolved at
17.9 microns. The dust distance from the star is probably less than or equal to
6 AU, although some dust may extend to 9 AU. The mass of observed dust is
\~10^22 g. Since the lifetime of dust particles is about 10,000 years because
of the Poytning-Robertson effect, we robustly estimate at least 4 10^26 g must
reside in parent bodies which may be asteroids if the system is in a steady
state and has an age of ~300 Myr. This mass is approximately 200 times that

The Palomar Testbed Interferometer Calibrator Catalog
The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) archive of observations between 1998
and 2005 is examined for objects appropriate for calibration of optical
long-baseline interferometer observations - stars that are predictably
point-like and single. Approximately 1,400 nights of data on 1,800 objects were
examined for this investigation. We compare those observations to an
intensively studied object that is a suitable calibrator, HD217014, and
statistically compare each candidate calibrator to that object by computing
both a Mahalanobis distance and a Principal Component Analysis. Our hypothesis
is that the frequency distribution of visibility data associated with
calibrator stars differs from non-calibrator stars such as binary stars.
Spectroscopic binaries resolved by PTI, objects known to be unsuitable for
calibrator use, are similarly tested to establish detection limits of this
approach. From this investigation, we find more than 350 observed stars
suitable for use as calibrators (with an additional being
rejected), corresponding to sky coverage for PTI. This approach
is noteworthy in that it rigorously establishes calibration sources through a
traceable, empirical methodology, leveraging the predictions of spectral energy
distribution modeling but also verifying it with the rich body of PTI's on-sky

New optical and near-infrared Surface Brightness Fluctuations models. A primary distance indicator ranging from Globular Clusters to distant galaxies?
We present new theoretical models for Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF)
both for optical and near-infrared bands in standard ground-based and Hubble
Space Telescope filter systems. Simple Stellar Population simulations are
adopted. Models cover the age and metallicity ranges from to and
from to 0.04 respectively. Effects due to the variation of the
Initial Mass Function and the stellar color-temperature relations are explored.
Particular attention is devoted to very bright stars in the color-magnitude
diagram and to investigate the effects of mass loss along the Red Giant Branch
(RGB) and the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). It is found that and bands
SBF amplitudes are powerful diagnostics for the morphology of the Horizontal
Branch and the Post-AGB stars population. We point out that a careful treatment
of mass loss process along the RGB and AGB is fundamental in determining
reliable SBF evaluations. The SBF measurements are used to give robust
constraints on the evolution of AGB stars, suggesting that mass loss activity
on AGB stars should be twice more efficient than on the RGB stars. Our models
are able to reproduce the absolute SBF magnitudes of the Galactic Globular
Clusters and of galaxies, and their integrated colors. New calibrations of
absolute SBF magnitude in , , , and photometric filters are
provided, which appear reliable enough to directly gauge distances bypassing
other distance indicators. The SBF technique is also used as stellar population
tracer to derive age and metallicity of a selected sample of galaxies of known
distances. Finally, {\it SBF color} versus {\it integrated color} diagrams are
proposed as particularly useful in removing the well known {\it age-metallicity

HST Observations of Chromospheres in Metal Deficient Field Giants
HST high resolution spectra of metal-deficient field giants more than double
the stars in previous studies, span about 3 magnitudes on the red giant branch,
and sample an abundance range [Fe/H]= -1 to -3. These stars, in spite of their
age and low metallicity, possess chromospheric fluxes of Mg II (2800 Angstrom)
that are within a factor of 4 of Population I stars, and give signs of a
dependence on the metal abundance at the lowest metallicities. The Mg II k-line
widths depend on luminosity and correlate with metallicity. Line profile
asymmetries reveal outflows that occur at lower luminosities (M_V = -0.8) than
detected in Ca K and H-alpha lines in metal-poor giants, suggesting mass
outflow occurs over a larger span of the red giant branch than previously
thought, and confirming that the Mg II lines are good wind diagnostics. These
results do not support a magnetically dominated chromosphere, but appear more
consistent with some sort of hydrodynamic, or acoustic heating of the outer

Spectroscopy and Time Variability of Absorption Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant
We present high resolution (R~75,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) Ca II
3933.663 and Na I 5889.951, 5895.924 spectra of 68
stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. The spectra comprise the
most complete high resolution, high S/N, optical survey of early type stars in
this region of the sky. A subset of the sight lines has been observed at
multiple epochs, 1993/1994 and 1996. Of the thirteen stars observed twice,
seven have spectra revealing changes in the equivalent width and/or velocity
structure of lines, most of which arise from remnant gas. Such time variability
has been reported previously for the sight lines towards HD 72089 and HD 72997
by Danks & Sembach (1995) and for HD 72127 by Hobbs et al. (1991). We have
confirmed the ongoing time variability of these spectra and present new
evidence of variability in the spectra of HD 73658, HD 74455, HD 75309 and HD
75821. We have tabulated Na I and Ca II absorption line information for the
sight lines in our sample to serve as a benchmark for further investigations of

A New Nearby Candidate Star Cluster in Ophiuchus at d = 170 pc
The recent discoveries of nearby star clusters and associations within a few
hundred pc of the Sun, as well as the order of magnitude difference in the
formation rates of the embedded and open cluster populations, suggests that
additional poor stellar groups are likely to be found at surprisingly close
distances to the Sun. Here I describe a new nearby stellar aggregate found by
virtue of the parallel proper motions, similar trigonometric parallaxes, and
consistent color-magnitude distribution of its early-type members. The 120
Myr-old group lies in Ophiuchus at 170 pc, with its most massive
member being the 4th-magnitude post-MS B8II-III star Oph. The group may
have escaped previous notice due to its non-negligible extinction (
0.9 mag). If the group was born with a normal initial mass function,
and the nine B- and A-type systems represent a complete system of
intermediate-mass stars, then the original population was probably of order
200 systems. The age and space motion of the new cluster are very similar
to those of the Pleiades, Per cluster, and AB Dor Moving Group,
suggesting that these aggregates may have formed in the same star-forming

Even though libraries have been offering eBooks for more than a decade, very little is known about eBook access and consumption in academic library collections. This paper addresses this gap with a log analysis study of eBook access at the library of the University of Waikato. This in-depth analysis covers a period spanning 10 years of eBook use at this university. We draw conclusions about the use of eBooks at this institution and compare the results with other published studies of eBook usage at tertiary institutes
The N Enrichment and Supernova Ejection of the Runaway Microquasar LS 5039
We present an investigation of new optical and ultraviolet spectra of the
mass donor star in the massive X-ray binary LS 5039. The optical band spectral
line strengths indicate that the atmosphere is N-rich and C-poor, and we
classify the stellar spectrum as type ON6.5 V((f)). The N-strong and C-weak
pattern is also found in the stellar wind P Cygni lines of N V 1240 and C IV
1550. We suggest that the N-enrichment may result from internal mixing if the
O-star was born as a rapid rotator, or the O-star may have accreted N-rich gas
prior to a common-envelope interaction with the progenitor of the supernova. We
re-evaluated the orbital elements to find an orbital period of P=4.4267 +/-
0.0010 d. We compared the spectral line profiles with new non-LTE,
line-blanketed model spectra, from which we derive an effective temperature
T_eff = 37.5 +/- 1.7 kK, gravity log g = 4.0 +/- 0.1, and projected rotational
velocity V sin i = 140 +/- 8 km/s. We fit the UV, optical, and IR flux
distribution using a model spectrum and extinction law with parameters E(B-V)=
1.28 +/- 0.02 and R= 3.18 +/- 0.07. We confirm the co-variability of the
observed X-ray flux and stellar wind mass loss rate derived from the H-alpha
profile, which supports the wind accretion scenario for the X-ray production in
LS 5039. Wind accretion models indicate that the compact companion has a mass
M_X/M_sun = 1.4 +/- 0.4, consistent with its identification as a neutron star.
The observed eccentricity and runaway velocity of the binary can only be
reconciled if the neutron star received a modest kick velocity due to a slight
asymmetry in the supernova explosion (during which >5 solar masses was

Jet angular correlation in vector-boson fusion processes at hadron colliders
Higgs boson and massive-graviton productions in association with two jets via
vector-boson fusion (VBF) processes and their decays into a vector-boson pair
at hadron colliders are studied. They include scalar and tensor boson
production processes via weak-boson fusion in quark-quark collisions, gluon
fusion in quark-quark, quark-gluon and gluon-gluon collisions, as well as their
decays into a pair of weak bosons or virtual gluons which subsequently decay
into , or . We give the helicity amplitudes
explicitly for all the VBF subprocesses, and show that the VBF amplitudes
dominate the exact matrix elements not only for the weak-boson fusion processes
but also for all the gluon fusion processes when appropriate selection cuts are
applied, such as a large rapidity separation between two jets and a slicing cut
for the transverse momenta of the jets. We also show that our off-shell
vector-boson current amplitudes reduce to the standard quark and gluon
splitting amplitudes with appropriate gluon-polarization phases in the
collinear limit. Nontrivial azimuthal angle correlations of the jets in the
production and in the decay of massive spin-0 and -2 bosons are manifestly
expressed as the quantum interference among different helicity states of the
intermediate vector-bosons. Those correlations reflect the spin and the CP

Is mindfulness Buddhist? (and why it matters).
Modern exponents of mindfulness meditation promote the therapeutic effects of "bare attention"--a sort of non-judgmental, non-discursive attending to the moment-to-moment flow of consciousness. This approach to Buddhist meditation can be traced to Burmese Buddhist reform movements of the first half of the 20th century, and is arguably at odds with more traditional Theravāda Buddhist doctrine and meditative practices. But the cultivation of present-centered awareness is not without precedent in Buddhist history; similar innovations arose in medieval Chinese Zen (Chan) and Tibetan Dzogchen. These movements have several things in common. In each case the reforms were, in part, attempts to render Buddhist practice and insight accessible to laypersons unfamiliar with Buddhist philosophy and/or unwilling to adopt a renunciatory lifestyle. In addition, these movements all promised astonishingly quick results. And finally, the innovations in practice were met with suspicion and criticism from traditional Buddhist quarters. Those interested in the therapeutic effects of mindfulness and bare attention are often not aware of the existence, much less the content, of the controversies surrounding these practices in Asian Buddhist history
