    Preventing and reducing the onset of type 2 diabetes among American Indian/Alaska Native youth requires ground-breaking strategies to affect knowledge, attitudes, and cognitive decision-making skills. In an unparalleled endeavor to address the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes in tribal communities, a K-12 Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools (DETS) curriculum was created by eight tribal colleges and three federal agencies.     Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    The Covid-19 pandemic significantly affected what was originally classed as ‘normal’ for everyone across the world and will undoubtedly continue to impact on the everyday lifestyle and well-being of the general-public for years to come (Frampton, 2021). All the education sectors were affected, and the polytechnic sector was no exception. As the Government moves through and beyond Covid-19 with an agenda firmly rooted in developing skills, it starts to raise questions around widening participation, not just in terms of entry criteria, but also in terms of institutional readiness to support such diverse groups of learners using tailored whole person pedagogical approaches (Kim et al., 2021; McCoy, 2021). Furthermore, with the pandemic’s rapid acceleration of automation and ways of working, should the focus just be on skills? (McKinsey and Company, 2020; McKinsey Global Institute, 2020; Shepheard, 2020; The World Economic Forum, 2021). Or should there be a parity of esteem with other aspects and outcomes of whole person learning such as reflective practice, professional identity, attitudes, and behaviours which might be best nurtured and developed through both lifelong and life wide learning? As the world moves to a position of coexisting with Covid-19, could part of the solution to improving learner satisfaction and employability be through more person-centred programmes of study? This review paper argues that the solution is one that is achieved by increasing learner agency and creating a tailored study programme that is focused on the knowledge, experience, social and emotional needs of the learner. The long-term success of these approaches that are discussed within this paper are dependent on several factors outlined within the paper, which will require further inquiry

    In this paper we describe ongoing work in protocol support for distributed multimedia applications. This work concerns the provision of suitable transport mechanisms to convey multimedia information (text, and digital voice and video) between multimedia workstations in a distributed system. There are two parts to the Lancaster multimedia work. First, we have developed an abstract model for multimedia communications that is based on the use of streams; and second, we have built an experimental system on which to test the implementation of protocols based on this model. This paper reports on both aspects of the Lancaster work, describing the results so far and identifying areas to be investigated further. 1.     This paper describes the contribution of Lancaster University to the definition of new transport services for supporting distributed multimedia applications. The paper first reports on a set of requirements that we have identified from a comprehensive applications survey. It goes on to describe the design and implementation of an experimental multimedia support infrastructure which attempts to meet these requirements. This infrastructure consists of a distributed systems platform built on top of a continuous media transport service and protocol.     Extending The Chorus Micro-Kernel To Support Continuous Media Applications

    . Currently, popular operating systems are unable to support the end-to-end real-time requirements of distributed continuous media. Furthermore, the integration of continuous media communications software into such systems poses significant challenges. This paper describes a design for distributed multimedia support in the Chorus micro-kernel operating system environment which provides the necessary soft real-time support while simultaneously running conventional applications. Our approach is to extend existing Chorus abstractions to include QoS configurability, connection oriented communications and real-time threads. The design uses the following key concepts: the notion of a flow to represent QoS controlled communication between two application threads, a close integration of communications and thread scheduling and the use of a split level scheduling architecture with kernel and user level threads.
