    Joining Campus and Community Through Service Learning

    Involving students in community-service learning requires campus pro­ gram coordinators and community-agency staff to collaborate in program development. Often, because service-learning programs and community organizations have different goals and priorities, separate constituencies, and even varied organizational cultures, they design their programs independently and at cross-purposes. When this occurs, neither organization achieves its goals for students or for the community. Successful service-learning programs bridge this gap between town and gown by cultivating a spirit of reciprocity, interdependence, and collaboration. When carefully considered, expressed, negotiated, and agreed upon, the needs and resources of each organization become complementary and mutually enhancing. This is not easy, however. Campus and community organizations may have competing goals, timetables, and agendas. Nevertheless, from the authors\u27 experiences both on campuses and in communities following a program-design model and asking certain essential questions are the keys to establishing programs that effectively serve campus, community, and students

    Evolution of Brain Tumor and Stability of Geometric Invariants

    This paper presents a method to reconstruct and to calculate geometric invariants on brain tumors. The geometric invariants considered in the paper are the volume, the area, the discrete Gauss curvature, and the discrete mean curvature. The volume of a tumor is an important aspect that helps doctors to make a medical diagnosis. And as doctors seek a stable calculation, we propose to prove the stability of some invariants. Finally, we study the evolution of brain tumor as a function of time in two or three years depending on patients with MR images every three or six months

    The giant radio galaxy 8C0821+695 and its environment

    We present new VLA and Effelsberg observations of the radio galaxy 8C0821+695. We have obtained detailed images in total intensity and polarization of this 2 Mpc sized giant. The magnetic field has a configuration predominantly parallel to the source main axis. We observe Faraday rotation at low frequencies, most probably produced by an ionized medium external to the radio source. The spectral index distribution is that typical of FR II radio galaxies, with spectral indices gradually steepening from the source extremes towards the core. Modeling the spectrum in the lobes using standard synchrotron loss models yields the spectral age of the source and the mean velocity of the jet-head with respect to the lobe material. The existence of a possible backflow in the lobe is considered to relate spectral with dynamical determinations of the age and the velocity with respect to the external medium. Through a very simple model, we obtain a physical characterization of the jets and the external medium in which the radio galaxy expands. The results in 8C0821+695 are consistent with a relativistic jet nourishing the lobes which expand in a hot, low density halo. We infer a deceleration of the source expansion velocity which we explain through a progressive increase in the hot-spot size.Comment: 11 pages; 8 figures; accepted in A&

    PROPOSED ACCOUNTING STANDARD REQUIRES CAPITALIZATION OF ALL LONG-TERM LEASES FOR LESSEES

    Accounting for leases has been a controversial issue both internationally and in the United States for a number of years. The focus of the issue has been whether or not simply disclosing the amount of lease commitments by the lessee in the notes to the financial statements is adequate financial reporting for long-term leases classified as operating leases. In 2010 the Financial Accounting Standards Board and International Accounting Standards Board jointly issued an exposure draft, Leases (Topic 840), requiring lessees to report an asset and liability for the present value of the committed lease payments or contracts that extend for more than one year. In July 2011, the two boards agreed to re-expose their proposal for this leases standard. A revised proposal was issued in May 2013. This paper examines changes in several balance sheet and income statement ratios by industry and specifically for a grocery store, a merchandiser, and an airline, that will result from the new accounting standard. As expected, ratios involving liabilities change in a direction making the companies appear more risky. In addition, the income statements are revised by imputing interest on the assumed capitalized amount of noncancellable leases and the interest coverage ratios are recalculated. Two companies reporting profits show a decline in the ratio while the airline actually experiences the ratio changing from negative to positive

    Student Usage And Perceptions Of The Value Of Recorded Lectures In A Traditional Face-To-Face (F2F) Class

    More than ever before, today’s colleges and universities are employing innovative and mutually-beneficial ways to meet the needs of students.  Due to increasing competition and changing demographics, institutions benefit from attracting more students as higher enrollments generate greater revenue; these additional tuition and fees are crucial as costs continue to rise and state funding declines.  Alternative course delivery modalities provide flexibility that can enable more students to obtain access to a postsecondary education as well as appeal to those with different learning styles or who are looking for a less traditional college experience.  In recent years, online programs have grown significantly when compared to the traditional face-to-face (F2F) environment.  While both deliveries have their own advantages and thus supporters, each has its own disadvantages as well.  As a result, blended or hybrid classes, which include features of both F2F and distance courses, are becoming more common.  This article describes a study in which two sections of an F2F tax course offered students access to recorded lectures, and reports the results of a survey designed to ascertain student usage and perceptions of the value of this supplemental material.

    Flaring Activity of Sgr A*: Expanding Hot Blobs

    Sgr A* is considered to be a massive black hole at the Galactic center and is known to be variable in radio, millimeter, near-IR and X-rays. Recent multi-wavelength observing campaigns show a simultaneous X-ray and near-IR flare, as well as sub-millimeter and near-IR flares from Sgr A*. The flare activity is thought to be arising from the innermost region of Sgr A*. We have recently argued that the duration of flares in near-IR and submillimeter wavelengths implies that the burst of emission expands and cools on a dynamical time scale before the flares leave Sgr A*. The detection of radio flares with a time delay in the range of 20 and 40 minutes between 7 and 12mm peak emission implies adiabatic expansion of a uniform, spherical hot blob due to flare activity. We suspect that this simple outflow picture shows some of the characteristics that are known to take place in microquasars, thus we may learn much from comparative study of Sgr A* and its environment vs. microquasars.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to be published in IV Microquasar Workshop: Microquasars and Beyond, September 18-22 2006, Como, Ital
