    In questo lavoro si presenta un modello matematico che consente di calcolare in forma chiusa ed in maniera accurata le frequenze naturali dei gusci cilindrici circolari isotropi a parete sottile e bordi incastrati. L’equazione delle frequenze è stata determinata applicando il principio di Hamilton, mediante il metodo di Rayleigh, al sistema di equazioni indefinite del moto derivanti dalla versione di Reissner della teoria di Love, opportunamente modificata con le assunzioni di Donnell. La validazione del modello è stata effettuata mettendone a confronto i risultati sia con quelli derivanti dall’analisi modale realizzata agli elementi finiti, sia con dati sperimentali e teorici presenti in letteratura. Da tale confronto è emerso che il modello fornisce frequenze naturali molto accurate, analoghe a quelle ottenibili al FEM o per via numerica con altri modelli presenti in letteratura, ma, grazie all’approccio risolutivo utilizzato, le ottiene con equazioni esplicite in forma chiusa e quindi senza la necessità di implementare complesse risoluzioni di tipo numerico

    An experimental investigation on the long-term compatibility of preheated crude palm oil in a large compression ignition diesel engine

    An experimental study was carried out on a large stationary compression ignition engine to evaluate the long-term compatibility and durability issues associated with the use of crude palm oil as fuel. Two different preheating temperatures (60 and 80 °C) were adopted to assess the potential improvements related to lower fuel viscosity. The results obtained, in terms of in-cylinder carbon deposits and engine wear, were compared with the results obtained using ordinary diesel fuel. For each fuel and preheating temperature, the engine was operated for 300 consecutive h, during which several engine lubricant samples were collected and analysed to determine soot and fuel contaminations, viscosity alterations, and the presence of different wear-related metals (measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy). At the end of each 300 h endurance test, the carbon deposits were scraped from engine cylinders and examined through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that the use of crude palm oil caused a remarkable increment of in-cylinder deposits formation compared with ordinary diesel. The lubricant analysis also revealed a faster viscosity degradation and consequent stronger engine wear, above all with the lower preheating temperature. The results obtained confirmed that continuous engine operation (i.e., without a complete lubricant change) should be carefully reduced when fuelling with crude palm oil. Moreover, the findings obtained herein confirmed the favourable impacts of fuel preheating at 80 °C compared to 60 °C, i.e., reduced carbon deposits by 27% and extended engine operation time by 30%

    Thermodynamic Limit and Dispersive Regularisation in Matrix Models

    We show that Hermitian matrix models support the occurrence of a new type of phase transition characterised by dispersive regularisation of the order parameter near the critical point. Using the identification of the partition function with a solution of a reduction of the Toda hierarchy, known as Volterra system, we argue that the singularity is resolved by the onset of a multi-dimensional dispersive shock of the order parameter in the space of coupling constants. This analysis explains the origin and mechanism leading to the emergence of chaotic behaviours observed in M^6 matrix models and extends its validity to even nonlinearity of arbitrary order.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.     The social effect of "being imitated" in children with autism spectrum disorder

    There is evidence that "being imitated" has social effects, and that the imitation of the child's actions may be used as a strategy to promote social engagement in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The observation of someone that imitates us recruits, indeed, neural areas involved in social cognition. We reviewed studies exploring the behavioral consequences of "being imitated" in children with ASD. We aimed at assessing what are the social skills targeted by this strategy, and the factors that may improve the response. The "being imitated" strategy improves social gazes, proximal social behaviors, and play skills, particularly in children with low developmental level, and also when the strategy is implemented by children's mothers. The "being imitated" may be used as a tool in early intervention to improve social skills, helping to assess the effects of intervention at both behavioral and neural level

    Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity in progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal syndrome

    Background: Pathological and MRI-based evidence suggests that multiple brain structures are likely to be involved in functional disconnection between brain areas. Few studies have investigated resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS). In this study, we investigated within- and between-network rsFC abnormalities in these two conditions. Methods: Twenty patients with PSP, 11 patients with CBS, and 16 healthy subjects (HS) underwent a resting-state fMRI study. Resting-state networks (RSNs) were extracted to evaluate within- and between-network rsFC using the Melodic and FSLNets software packages. results: Increased within-network rsFC was observed in both PSP and CBS patients, with a larger number of RSNs being involved in CBS. Within-network cerebellar rsFC positively correlated with mini-mental state examination scores in patients with PSP. Compared to healthy volunteers, PSP and CBS patients exhibit reduced functional connectivity between the lateral visual and auditory RSNs, with PSP patients additionally showing lower functional connectivity between the cerebellar and insular RSNs. Moreover, rsFC between the salience and executive-control RSNs was increased in patients with CBS compared to HS. conclusion: This study provides evidence of functional brain reorganization in both PSP and CBS. Increased within-network rsFC could represent a higher degree of synchronization in damaged brain areas, while between-network rsFC abnormalities may mainly reflect degeneration of long-range white matter fibers

    Cost-effectiveness analysis of revisional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: laparoscopic vs. robot assisted

    There is controversy over the possible advantages of the robotic technology in revisional bariatric surgery. The aim of this study is to report the experience of a high-volume bariatric center on revisional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with robot-assisted (R-rRYGB) and laparoscopic (L-rRYGB) approaches, with regards to operative outcomes and costs. Patients who underwent R-rRYGB and L-rRYGB between 2008 and 2021 were included. Patients’ baseline characteristics and perioperative data were recorded. The primary endpoint was the overall postoperative morbidity. A full economic evaluation was performed. One-way and two-way sensitivity analyses were performed on laparoscopic anastomotic leak and reoperation rates. A total of 194 patients were included: 44 (22.7%) L-rRYGB and 150 (77.3%) R-rRYGB. The robotic approach was associated with lower overall complication rate (10% vs. 22.7%, p = 0.038), longer operative time, and a reduced length of stay compared to L-rRYGB. R-rRYGB was more expensive than L-rRYGB (mean difference 2401.1€, p < 0.001). The incremental cost-effective ratio (ICER) was 18,906.3€/complication and the incremental cost-utility ratio was 48,022.0€/QALY (quality-adjusted life years), that is below the willingness-to-pay threshold. Decision tree analysis showed that L-rRYGB was the most cost-effective strategy in the base-case scenario; a probability of leak ≥ 13%, or a probability of reoperation ≥ 14% following L-rRYGB, or a 12.7% reduction in robotic costs would be required for R-rRYGB to become the most cost-effective strategy. R-rRYGB was associated with higher costs than L-rRYGB in our base-case scenario. However, it is an acceptable alternative from a cost-effectiveness perspective

    Plume height, volume, and classification of explosive volcanic eruptions based on the Weibull function

    The Weibull distribution between volume and square root of isopach area has been recently introduced for determining volume of tephra deposits, which is crucial to the assessment of the magnitude and hazards of explosive volcanoes. We show how the decay of the size of the largest lithics with the square root of isopleth area can also be well described using a Weibull function and how plume height correlates strongly with corresponding Weibull parameters. Variations of median grain size (Mdϕ) values with square root of area of the associated contours can be, similarly, well fitted with a Weibull function. Weibull parameters, derived for both the thinning of tephra deposits and the decrease of grain size (both maximum lithic diameter and Mdϕ), with a proxy for the distance from vent (e.g., square root of isoline areas) can be combined to classify the style of explosive volcanic eruptions. Accounting for the uncertainty in the derivation of eruptive parameters (e.g., plume height and volume of tephra deposits) is crucial to any classification of eruptive style and hazard assessment. Considering a typical uncertainty of 20% for the determination of plume height, a new eruption classification scheme based on selected Weibull parameters is proposed. Ultraplinian, Plinian, Subplinian, and small-moderate explosive eruptions are defined on the ground of plume height and mass eruption rate. Overall, the Weibull fitting represents a versatile and reliable strategy for the estimation of both the volume of tephra deposits and the height of volcanic plumes and for the classification of eruptive style. Nonetheless, due to the typically large uncertainties (mainly due to availability of data, compilation of isopach and isopleth maps, and discrepancies from empirical best fits), plume height, volume, and magnitude of explosive eruptions cannot be considered as absolute values, regardless of the technique used. It is important that various empirical and analytical methods are applied in order to assess such an uncertaint

    Apricot melanoidins prevent oxidative endothelial cell death by counteracting mitochondrial oxidation and membrane depolarization

    The cardiovascular benefits associated with diets rich in fruit and vegetables are thought to be due to phytochemicals contained in fresh plant material. However, whether processed plant foods provide the same benefits as unprocessed ones is an open question. Melanoidins from heat-processed apricots were isolated and their presence confirmed by colorimetric analysis and browning index. Oxidative injury of endothelial cells (ECs) is the key step for the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), therefore the potential protective effect of apricot melanoidins on hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative mitochondrial damage and cell death was explored in human ECs. The redox state of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial compartments was detected by using the redox-sensitive, fluorescent protein (roGFP), while the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was assessed with the fluorescent dye, JC-1. ECs exposure to hydrogen peroxide, dose-dependently induced mitochondrial and cytoplasmic oxidation. Additionally detected hydrogen peroxide-induced phenomena were MMP dissipation and ECs death. Pretreatment of ECs with apricot melanoidins, significantly counteracted and ultimately abolished hydrogen peroxide-induced intracellular oxidation, mitochondrial depolarization and cell death. In this regard, our current results clearly indicate that melanoidins derived from heat-processed apricots, protect human ECs against oxidative stress

    Surgical Treatment of Important Pelvic Organ Prolapse in a Patient with Severe Systemic Disease: A Case Report

    Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a common disease and the surgical treatment ranges from traditional vaginal techniques to abdominal approach using mesh. We present a case of a woman with severe POP and with severe systemic disease treated with vaginal surgical approach under regional anesthesia. A 56-years-old woman presented to our hospital with a POP.&nbsp; The patient had HIV infection and chronic hepatitis C with liver fibrosis. She had a previous STEMI and a subsequent NSTEMI. The surgery performed was vaginal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, anterior and posterior vaginal repair, right sacrospinous ligament fixation, under regional anesthesia. Prevalence of POP ranges from 10% to 24% and vaginal correction of defects is a common procedure, but Cochrane review stated that abdominal mesh surgery should be considered the gold standard for the treatment&nbsp; but this surgery needs general anesthesia. Because the recurrence of prolapse after vaginal hysterectomy and sacrospinous ligament fixation occured in approximately 25%, this technique could be useful in patients with systemic disease under regional anesthesia and a multidisciplinary approach is essential
