Multiple energetic injections in a strong spike-like solar burst
An intense and fast spike-like solar burst was built up of short time scale structures superimposed on an underlying gradual emission, the time evolution of which shows remarkable proportionality between hard X-ray and microwave fluxes. The finer time structure were best defined at mm-microwaves. At the peak of the event, the finer structures repeat every 30x60ms. The more slowly varying component with a time scale of about 1 second was identified in microwave hard X-rays throughout the burst duration. It is suggested that X-ray fluxes might also be proportional to the repetition rate of basic units of energy injection (quasi-quantized). The relevant parameters of one primary energy release site are estimated both in the case where hard X-rays are produced primarily by thick-target bremsstrahlung, and when they are purely thermal. The relation of this figure to global energy considerations is discussed
Hierarchical Spatial Organization of Geographical Networks
In this work we propose the use of a hirarchical extension of the
polygonality index as a means to characterize and model geographical networks:
each node is associated with the spatial position of the nodes, while the edges
of the network are defined by progressive connectivity adjacencies. Through the
analysis of such networks, while relating its topological and geometrical
properties, it is possible to obtain important indications about the
development dynamics of the networks under analysis. The potential of the

Tritium spelta L. – Suebian crop? An ethnographic hypothesis on genetic trial
Until the 20th century, spelt (Triticum spelta) was the traditional wheat used in the North-West of the Iberian Peninsula. A recently proposed ethnographic thesis states that this cereal was a vestige and heritage of the Germanic Suebi kingdom that established in Gallecia between 410 and 584. The present study aims to verify the mentioned thesis and to draw conclusions about possible migrations routes of the suebians.
The genetic comparison included Triticum spelta L. samples of North-West-Iberian origin and a large number of samples from other Eurasian regions, including alleged suebian homeland regions (e.g. Suabia/Germany) before they immigrated in the Peninsula. An approximately 1-kb sequence, including a part of the promoter and the coding region of the high molecular-weight (HMW) glutenin B1-1 subunit gene of 48 accessions were analysed by allelic differentiation. The mutual similarities between all sequences were determined by multiple alignment and using the Neighbor Joining clustering method (Bionumerics software).
Our data show that Iberian, Mediterranean and Eurasian varieties clearly shared genetic similarities, whereas the varieties from Central and North Europe grouped in other clusters. Life table analysis of Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) infesting sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) in São Paulo
An ecological life table for eggs and nymphs of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera:
Psyllidae) was constructed with data obtained from orange orchards (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) in 2 regions of the State of São Paulo, over 4 generations in the period from XI-2006
to V-2007, comprising spring, summer, and fall seasons. Young growing shoots with D. citri
eggs present were identifed, and live individuals were counted until adult emergence. No
predatory arthropods were observed in association with D. citri eggs and nymphs during
the study. The mean parasitism of fourth- and ffth-instar nymphs by Tamarixia radiata
Waterston (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was 2.3%. The durations of the egg–adult period
were similar among the 4 generations, ranging from 18.0 to 24.7 d (at mean temperatures
ranging from 21.6 to 26.0 °C) and followed the temperature requirement models obtained
in the laboratory for D. citri. However, survival from the egg to the adult stage for the same
period varied considerably from 1.7 to 21.4%; the highest mortalities were observed in the
egg and small nymphal (frst- to thirdinstar) stages, which were considered to be key phases

a maio de 2007, compreendendo as estações de primavera, verão e outono. Ramos jovens
em crescimento com a presença de ovos de D. citri foram identificados e os indivíduos vivos
foram contados até a emergência dos adultos. Nenhum predador foi observado associado a
ovos e ninfas de D. citri durante o estudo. A taxa média de parasitismo de ninfas de quarto
e quinto ínstares por Tamarixia radiata Waterson (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) foi de 2.3%.
A duração do período de ovo a adulto foi semelhante entre as quatro gerações, variando de
18.0 a 24.7 dias (com temperaturas médias de 21.6 a 26.0 °C) e seguiram os modelos de
exigencias térmicas obtidas em laboratório para D. citri. Todavia, a sobrevivencia de ovo
até o estágio adulto variou consideravelmente para o mesmo período, de 1.7 a 21.4%, sendo
que as maiores mortalidades foram observadas nos estágios de ovos e ninfas pequenas (de
primeiro a terceiro ínstares), as quais foram consideradas fases chaves para o crescimento

Early reserve effects linked to small home ranges of a commercial fish, Diplodus sargus, Sparidae
Studies that combine both the ecological responses of marine species and protection measures with movement patterns and habitat use are of major importance in order to better understand the performance of marine protected areas (MPA) and how species respond to their implementation. However, few studies have assessed MPA performance by relating local individual movement patterns and the observed reserve effects. In this study, we combined acoustic telemetry with abundance estimates to study the early effects of a recently established small coastal MPA on the local populations of white seabream. The results show that even small, recently established coastal MPAs can increase the abundance and biomass of commercial fish species, provided that target species have small home ranges and exhibit high site fidelity
Hierarchical characterization of complex networks
While the majority of approaches to the characterization of complex networks
has relied on measurements considering only the immediate neighborhood of each
network node, valuable information about the network topological properties can
be obtained by considering further neighborhoods. The current work discusses on
how the concepts of hierarchical node degree and hierarchical clustering
coefficient (introduced in cond-mat/0408076), complemented by new hierarchical
measurements, can be used in order to obtain a powerful set of topological
features of complex networks. The interpretation of such measurements is
discussed, including an analytical study of the hierarchical node degree for
random networks, and the potential of the suggested measurements for the
characterization of complex networks is illustrated with respect to simulations
of random, scale-free and regular network models as well as real data
(airports, proteins and word associations). The enhanced characterization of
the connectivity provided by the set of hierarchical measurements also allows
the use of agglomerative clustering methods in order to obtain taxonomies of
relationships between nodes in a network, a possibility which is also

FUSE Observations of the Magellanic Bridge Gas toward Two Early-Type Stars: Molecules, Physical Conditions, and Relative Abundance
We discuss FUSE observations of two early-type stars, DI1388 and DGIK975, in
the low density and low metallicity gas of Magellanic Bridge (MB). Toward
DI1388, the FUSE observations show molecular hydrogen, O VI, and numerous other
atomic or ionic transitions in absorption, implying the presence of multiple
gas phases in a complex arrangement. The relative abundance pattern in the MB
is attributed to varying degrees of depletion onto dust similar to that of halo
clouds. The N/O ratio is near solar, much higher than N/O in damped Ly-alpha
systems, implying subsequent stellar processing to explain the origin of
nitrogen in the MB. The diffuse molecular cloud in this direction has a low
column density and low molecular fraction. H2 is observed in both the
Magellanic Stream and the MB, yet massive stars form only in the MB, implying
significantly different physical processes between them. In the MB some of the
H2 could have been pulled out from the SMC via tidal interaction, but some also
could have formed in situ in dense clouds where star formation might have taken
place. Toward DGIK975, the presence of neutral, weakly and highly ionized
species suggest that this sight line has also several complex gas phases. The
highly ionized species of O VI, C IV, and Si IV toward both stars have very
broad features, indicating that multiple components of hot gas at different
velocities are present. Several sources (a combination of turbulent mixing
layer, conductive heating, and cooling flows) may be contributing to the
production of the highly ionized gas in the MB. Finally, this study has
confirmed previous results that the high-velocity cloud HVC 291.5-41.2+80 is
mainly ionized composed of weakly and highly ions. The high ion ratios are
