Sustainable use of light for chemical and electrical energy production
The Earth receives around 1.9 x 106 EJ of energy in visible light each year but only a fraction of this sunlight energy is being converted to biomass (chemical energy) through the process of photosynthesis. There is no doubt our fossil fuel resources are depleting; therefore there is an urgent need for an alternative source of renewable energy that is sustainable. This project works on the potential of developing a novel cultivation system for maximising the use of solar energy by combining solar panels with outdoor microalgae ponds for the production of both chemical and electrical energy
Gap Probabilities for Edge Intervals in Finite Gaussian and Jacobi Unitary Matrix Ensembles
The probabilities for gaps in the eigenvalue spectrum of the finite dimension
random matrix Hermite and Jacobi unitary ensembles on some
single and disconnected double intervals are found. These are cases where a
reflection symmetry exists and the probability factors into two other related
probabilities, defined on single intervals. Our investigation uses the system
of partial differential equations arising from the Fredholm determinant
expression for the gap probability and the differential-recurrence equations
satisfied by Hermite and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In our study we find
second and third order nonlinear ordinary differential equations defining the
probabilities in the general case. For N=1 and N=2 the probabilities and
thus the solution of the equations are given explicitly. An asymptotic
expansion for large gap size is obtained from the equation in the Hermite case,
and also studied is the scaling at the edge of the Hermite spectrum as , and the Jacobi to Hermite limit; these last two studies make
correspondence to other cases reported here or known previously. Moreover, the
differential equation arising in the Hermite ensemble is solved in terms of an
explicit rational function of a {Painlev\'e-V} transcendent and its derivative,
and an analogous solution is provided in the two Jacobi cases but this time

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial examining multilevel prediction of response to behavioral activation and exposure-based therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.
BACKGROUND:Only 40-60% of patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience long-lasting improvement with gold standard psychosocial interventions. Identifying neurobehavioral factors that predict treatment success might provide specific targets for more individualized interventions, fostering more optimal outcomes and bringing us closer to the goal of "personalized medicine." Research suggests that reward and threat processing (approach/avoidance behavior) and cognitive control may be important for understanding anxiety and comorbid depressive disorders and may have relevance to treatment outcomes. This study was designed to determine whether approach-avoidance behaviors and associated neural responses moderate treatment response to exposure-based versus behavioral activation therapy for generalized anxiety disorder. METHODS/DESIGN:We are conducting a randomized controlled trial involving two 10-week group-based interventions: exposure-based therapy or behavioral activation therapy. These interventions focus on specific and unique aspects of threat and reward processing, respectively. Prior to and after treatment, participants are interviewed and undergo behavioral, biomarker, and neuroimaging assessments, with a focus on approach and avoidance processing and decision-making. Primary analyses will use mixed models to examine whether hypothesized approach, avoidance, and conflict arbitration behaviors and associated neural responses at baseline moderate symptom change with treatment, as assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 item scale. Exploratory analyses will examine additional potential treatment moderators and use data reduction and machine learning methods. DISCUSSION:This protocol provides a framework for how studies may be designed to move the field toward neuroscience-informed and personalized psychosocial treatments. The results of this trial will have implications for approach-avoidance processing in generalized anxiety disorder, relationships between levels of analysis (i.e., behavioral, neural), and predictors of behavioral therapy outcome. Health and Economic Impact of Surgical Site Infections Diagnosed after Hospital Discharge
Although surgical site infections (SSIs) are known to cause substantial illness and costs during the index hospitalization, little information exists about the impact of infections diagnosed after discharge, which constitute the majority of SSIs. In this study, using patient questionnaire and administrative databases, we assessed the clinical outcomes and resource utilization in the 8-week postoperative period associated with SSIs recognized after discharge. SSI recognized after discharge was confirmed in 89 (1.9%) of 4,571 procedures from May 1997 to October 1998. Patients with SSI, but not controls, had a significant decline in SF-12 (Medical Outcomes Study 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey) mental health component scores after surgery (p=0.004). Patients required significantly more outpatient visits, emergency room visits, radiology services, readmissions, and home health aide services than did controls. Average total costs during the 8 weeks after discharge were US1,773 for controls (p<0.001)
Defining the "core microbiome" of the microbial communities in the tonsils of healthy pigs
BACKGROUND: Porcine tonsils are the colonization site for many pathogenic as well as commensal microorganisms and are the primary lymphoid tissue encountered by organisms entering through the mouth or nares. The goal of this study was to provide an in-depth characterization of the composition and structure of the tonsillar microbial communities and to define the core microbiome in the tonsils of healthy pigs, using high throughput bar-coded 454-FLX pyrosequencing. RESULTS: Whole tonsils were collected at necropsy from 12 16-week-old finisher pigs from two healthy herds. Tonsil brushes were also used to collect samples from four of these animals. Bacterial DNA was isolated from each sample, amplified by PCR with universal primers specific for the bacterial 16S rRNA genes, and the PCR products sequenced using pyrosequencing. An average of 13,000 sequences were generated from each sample. Microbial community members were identified by sequence comparison to known bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The microbiomes of these healthy herds showed very strong similarities in the major components as well as distinct differences in minor components. Pasteurellaceae dominated the tonsillar microbiome in all animals, comprising ~60% of the total, although the relative proportions of the genera Actinobacillus, Haemophilus, and Pasteurella varied between the herds. Also found in all animals were the genera Alkanindiges, Peptostreptococcus, Veillonella, Streptococcus and Fusobacterium, as well as Enterobacteriaceae and Neisseriaceae. Treponema and Chlamydia were unique to Herd 1, while Arcanobacterium was unique to Herd 2. Tonsil brushes yielded similar results to tissue specimens, although Enterobacteriaceae and obligate anaerobes were more frequently found in tissue than in brush samples, and Chlamydia, an obligately intracellular organism, was not found in brush specimens. CONCLUSIONS: We have extended and supported our previous studies with 16S clone libraries, using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing to describe the microbial communities in tonsils of healthy pigs. We have defined a core microbiome, dominated by Pasteurellaceae, in tonsil specimens, and have also demonstrated the presence of unique minor components of the tonsillar microbiome present in each herd. Increased knowledge of adult-onset dystonia amongst medical students via brief video education: a systematic review and cohort study
Most doctors have limited knowledge of dystonia, a movement disorder that can affect people of all ages; this contributes to diagnostic delay and poor quality of life. We investigated whether a brief educational intervention could improve knowledge of dystonia amongst medical students. We conducted a systematic review on undergraduate knowledge of dystonia and created an eight-minute video on the condition. We invited medical students at the University of Leeds, UK, to answer 15 multiple choice questions before and immediately after watching the video, and again one month later. Only one previous study specifically assessed medical students knowledge of dystonia whilst five others tested their knowledge of movement disorders, or neurology generally, with some questions on dystonia. Of the University of Leeds medical students, 87 (100%), 77 (89%) and 40 (46%) completed the baseline, immediate-recall and delayed-recall questionnaires, respectively. The mean score for students who completed all three questionnaires increased from 7.7 (out of 15) to 12.5 on the immediate-recall questionnaire (p p < 0.001). At baseline, 76% of students rated their confidence in recognising dystonia as low. After watching the video, 78% rated their confidence as a high, and none rated it low. A brief video improved their knowledge substantially, with sustained effects. This method could be incorporated into medical curricula to reduce diagnostic delays
Analytic and Asymptotic Methods for Nonlinear Singularity Analysis: a Review and Extensions of Tests for the Painlev\'e Property
The integrability (solvability via an associated single-valued linear
problem) of a differential equation is closely related to the singularity
structure of its solutions. In particular, there is strong evidence that all
integrable equations have the Painlev\'e property, that is, all solutions are
single-valued around all movable singularities. In this expository article, we
review methods for analysing such singularity structure. In particular, we
describe well known techniques of nonlinear regular-singular-type analysis,
i.e. the Painlev\'e tests for ordinary and partial differential equations. Then
we discuss methods of obtaining sufficiency conditions for the Painlev\'e
property. Recently, extensions of \textit{irregular} singularity analysis to
nonlinear equations have been achieved. Also, new asymptotic limits of
differential equations preserving the Painlev\'e property have been found. We
