Gap Probabilities for Edge Intervals in Finite Gaussian and Jacobi Unitary Matrix Ensembles
The probabilities for gaps in the eigenvalue spectrum of the finite dimension
random matrix Hermite and Jacobi unitary ensembles on some
single and disconnected double intervals are found. These are cases where a
reflection symmetry exists and the probability factors into two other related
probabilities, defined on single intervals. Our investigation uses the system
of partial differential equations arising from the Fredholm determinant
expression for the gap probability and the differential-recurrence equations
satisfied by Hermite and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In our study we find
second and third order nonlinear ordinary differential equations defining the
probabilities in the general case. For N=1 and N=2 the probabilities and
thus the solution of the equations are given explicitly. An asymptotic
expansion for large gap size is obtained from the equation in the Hermite case,
and also studied is the scaling at the edge of the Hermite spectrum as , and the Jacobi to Hermite limit; these last two studies make
correspondence to other cases reported here or known previously. Moreover, the
differential equation arising in the Hermite ensemble is solved in terms of an
explicit rational function of a {Painlev\'e-V} transcendent and its derivative,
and an analogous solution is provided in the two Jacobi cases but this time
involving a {Painlev\'e-VI} transcendent.Comment: 32 pages, Latex2
Hamiltonians separable in cartesian coordinates and third-order integrals of motion
We present in this article all Hamiltonian systems in E(2) that are separable
in cartesian coordinates and that admit a third-order integral, both in quantum
and in classical mechanics. Many of these superintegrable systems are new, and
it is seen that there exists a relation between quantum superintegrable
potentials, invariant solutions of the Korteweg-De Vries equation and the

General-relativistic Model of Magnetically Driven Jet
The general scheme for the construction of the general-relativistic model of
the magnetically driven jet is suggested. The method is based on the usage of
the 3+1 MHD formalism. It is shown that the critical points of the flow and the
explicit radial behavior of the physical variables may be derived through the

Third order superintegrable systems separating in polar coordinates
A complete classification is presented of quantum and classical
superintegrable systems in that allow the separation of variables in
polar coordinates and admit an additional integral of motion of order three in
the momentum. New quantum superintegrable systems are discovered for which the
potential is expressed in terms of the sixth Painlev\'e transcendent or in
terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function
On reductions of some KdV-type systems and their link to the quartic He'non-Heiles Hamiltonian

Completeness of the cubic and quartic H\'enon-Heiles Hamiltonians
The quartic H\'enon-Heiles Hamiltonian passes the Painlev\'e test for
only four sets of values of the constants. Only one of these, identical to the
traveling wave reduction of the Manakov system, has been explicitly integrated
(Wojciechowski, 1985), while the three others are not yet integrated in the
generic case . We integrate them by building
a birational transformation to two fourth order first degree equations in the
classification (Cosgrove, 2000) of such polynomial equations which possess the
Painlev\'e property. This transformation involves the stationary reduction of
various partial differential equations (PDEs). The result is the same as for
the three cubic H\'enon-Heiles Hamiltonians, namely, in all four quartic cases,
a general solution which is meromorphic and hyperelliptic with genus two. As a
consequence, no additional autonomous term can be added to either the cubic or
the quartic Hamiltonians without destroying the Painlev\'e integrability

Antimicrobial use and microbiological testing in district general hospital ICUs of the Veneto region of north-east Italy
International - predominantly American - studies undertaken in the ICUs of teaching centres show that inadequate antibiotic therapy increases mortality and length of stay. We sought to ascertain whether this also pertains to smaller ICUs in the Veneto region of north-east Italy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such survey in the Veneto area or in Italy as a whole. A retrospective, observational study was performed across five general-hospital ICUs to examine appropriateness of microbiological sampling, empirical antibiotic adequacy, and outcomes. Among 911 patients (mean age, 65.8 years ± 16.2 SD; median ICU stay, 17.0 days [IQR, 8.0–29.0]), 757 (83.1 %) were given empirical antibiotics. Treatment adequacy could be fully assessed in only 212 patients (28.0 %), who received empirical treatment and who had a relevant clinical sample collected at the initiation of this antibiotic (T0). Many other patients only had delayed microbiological investigation of their infections between day 1 and day 10 of therapy. Mortality was significantly higher among the 34.9 % of patients receiving inadequate treatment (48.6 % vs 18.80 %; p < 0.001). Only 32.5 % of combination regimens comprised a broad-spectrum Gram-negative β-lactam plus an anti-MRSA agent, and many combinations were irrational. Inadequate treatment was frequent and was strongly associated with mortality; moreover, there was delayed microbiological investigation of many infections, precluding appropriate treatment modification and de-escalation.
