Ellsworth Huntington: considerations on the “distribution of civilization” map of “Civilization and Climate” Abstract: Coming from an author who was significantly influenced by Social Darwinism, Ellsworth Huntington’s (1876-1947) intellectual efforts played a decisive role in strengthening American Human Geography in the early twentieth century. The article aims to contribute to the enlightenment of an important episode that occurred during the expansion period of the academic Geography in the USA. It was the elaboration, by this geographer, of a map of “distribution of civilization” that sought to rank the regions of the world on a scale from 0 to 10. The map was published in one of the chapters of “Civilization and Climate”, a book that had its first edition in 1915 and a third extended edition in 1924. That work is one of the first more systematic attempts to discuss a specific geographic epistemology and to elaborate a geographical theory of history that were produced in the USA, which is why it has an unique importance in the history of Geography. El artículo busca contribuir a la aclaración de un episodio importante que ocurrió durante el período de expansión de la geografía universitaria en los Estados Unidos, que fue la elaboración por parte de este geógrafo de un mapa de “distribución de la civilización” buscando clasificar las regiones del mundo en una escala del 0 al 10. El mapa fue publicado en uno de los capítulos del libro “Civilization and Climate”, que tuvo su primera edición en 1915 y una tercera edición extendida en 1924. Este trabajo es uno de los primeros intentos más sistemáticos de discutir una epistemología geográfica específica y la elaboración de una teoría geográfica de la historia que se produjo en los Estados Unidos, un hecho que le da una importancia muy singular en la historia de la Geografía. O artigo busca contribuir para a clarificação de um importante episódio ocorrido durante o período de expansão da Geografia universitária nos EUA que foi a elaboração, por esse geógrafo, de um mapa de “distribuição da civilização” que buscava hierarquizar as regiões do mundo em uma escala de 0 a 10. O mapa foi publicado em um dos capítulos da obra “Civilization and Climate”, que teve a sua primeira edição em 1915 e uma terceira edição estendida em 1924. Esse artigo visa expor alguns aspectos importantes da trajetória intelectual da geógrafa estadunidense Ellen Semple (1863-1932) e sumarizar suas principais contribuições epistemológicas à disciplina. Na primeira parte são abordados alguns elementos da trajetória da autora com ênfase em sua cronologia bibliográfica, em sua atuação institucional e em seu papel para a consolidação da Antropogeografia nos EUA. Na segunda parte são discutidos os elementos teóricos mais marcantes da sua obra, com destaque para o esforço encarnado em seu trabalho de maior repercussão, “Influences of Geographic Environment” (1911). Na terceira e última parte é oferecida uma discussão sobre o impacto do Darwinismo Social na fundamentação epistemológica e filosófica de seus escritos.This article seeks to expose some important aspects of the intellectual trajectory of the American geographer Ellen Semple (1863-1932) and summarizing her main epistemological contributions to the discipline. In the first part, some elements of the author's trajectory are discussed, with emphasis on their bibliographic chronology, their institutional performance and their role for the consolidation of Anthropogeography in the USA. In the second part, the most important theoretical elements of her work are discussed, with emphasis on the effort embodied in his most influential work, Influences of Geographic Environment (1911). In the third and final part is offered a discussion about the impact of Social Darwinism on the epistemological and philosophical foundation of her writings.Este artículo desea exponer algunos aspectos importantes de la trayectoria intelectual de la geógrafa estadounidense Ellen Semple (1863-1932) y resumir sus principales contribuciones epistemológicas a la disciplina. En la primera parte se abordan algunos elementos de la trayectoria de la autora con énfasis en su cronología bibliográfica, en su actuación institucional y en su papel para la consolidación de la Antropogeografía en los Estados Unidos. En la segunda parte se discuten los elementos teóricos más notable de su obra, con destaque para el esfuerzo incorporado en su trabajo de mayor repercusión, "Influences of Geographic Environment" (1911). Dans la première partie, quelques éléments de la trajectoire de l 'auteur sont abordés, en insistant sur leur chronologie bibliographique, leur performance institutionnelle et leur rôle dans la consolidation de l' anthropogéographie aux États-Unis. Dans la deuxième partie, les éléments théoriques les plus notables de son travail sont discutés, en mettant l'accent sur l'effort incorporé dans son travail le plus influent, "Influences of Geographic Environment" (1911). O Darwinismo Social na Geografia Humana do início do século XX: o caso da obra “Influences of Geographic Environment” de Ellen Semple

O artigo busca explicar a relação entre o Darwinismo Social, a institucionalização da Geografia Humana nos EUA nas primeiras décadas do século XX e as posturas epistemológicas e filosóficas que fundamentam a obra “Influences of Geographic Environment” (1911), escrita por Ellen Semple (1863-1932). O livro em questão foi uma das principais tentativas mais extensas de sistematização teórica da Geografia Humana produzidas nos EUA durante o período crítico de expansão da presença universitária da disciplina no país. Defenderemos a hipótese de que as ideias expostas pela geógrafa nesse trabalho evidenciam claramente que a construção do campo disciplinar no mundo de língua inglesa se deu a partir da internalização de posturas intelectuais derivadas do debate evolucionista que chegaram às Ciências Humanas através do Darwinismo Social e que foram favorecidas pelo contexto geopolítico de ascensão do imperialismo.   The article seeks to explain the relationship between Social Darwinism, the institutionalization of Human Geography in the United States in the first decades of the twentieth century, and the epistemological and philosophical positions underlying the work Influences of Geographic Environment(1911) written by Ellen Semple (1863-1932). The book in question was one of the main comprehensive attempts at theoretical systematization of Human Geography produced in the US during the critical period of expansion of the discipline university's presence in the country. We’ll defend the hypothesis that the ideas presented by the geographer in this work clearly demonstrate that the construction of the disciplinary field in the English-speaking world took place from the internalization of intellectual positions derived from the evolutionary debate that arrived at the Human Sciences through Social Darwinism and that were favored by the geopolitical context of the rise of imperialism

O artigo busca trazer um panorama de alguns aspectos da trajetória e da produção intelectual de Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), um dos mais importantes autores da Geografia estadunidense das primeiras décadas do século XX. Será oferecido, incialmente, um breve quadro da institucionalização acadêmica da disciplina nos EUA, no qual a contribuição de Huntington se insere. A seguir, trataremos de alguns aspectos biobibliográficos e institucionais da trajetória do geógrafo. Na última parte, apresentaremos as principais questões epistemológicas presentes nas obras do autor que possuem maior substância teórica para a delimitação do objeto de estudo da Geografia Humana com vistas a discutir a sua concepção da disciplina como uma forma de estudo da civilização e a originalidade da sua teoria geográfica da história.The article seeks to provide an overview of some aspects of the trajectory and the intellectual production of Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), one of the most important authors of American Geography in the first decades of the 20th century. Initially, a brief overview of the academic institutionalization of the discipline in which Huntington's contribution is inserted will be offered. Next, we will deal with some biobibliographical and institutional aspects of the geographer's trajectory. In the last part, we will present the main epistemological questions treated in the author's works that have greater theoretical substance for the delimitation of the subject of study of Human Geography in order to discuss his conception of the discipline as a way of studying civilization and the originality of his geographic theory of history.L'article cherche à donner un bilan de certains aspects de la trajectoire et de la production intellectuelle d'Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), l'un des auteurs les plus importants de la géographie américaine dans les premières décennies du 20e siècle. Premièrement, un bref aperçu du processus d'institutionnalisation académique de la discipline aux États-Unis sera offert, dans lequel la contribution de Huntington est insérée. Ensuite, nous traiterons de certains aspects biobibliographiques et institutionnels de la trajectoire du géographe. Dans la dernière partie, nous présenterons les principales questions épistémologiques présentes dans les travaux de l'auteur qui ont une plus grande substance théorique pour la délimitation de l'objet d'étude de la Géographie Humaine afin de discuter de sa conception de la discipline comme un moyen d'étudier la civilisation et l'originalité de son théorie géographique de l'histoire.El artículo busca ofrecer una visión general de algunos aspectos de la trayectoria y de la producción intelectual de Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), uno de los autores más importantes de la geografía estadounidense de las primeras décadas del siglo XX. A continuación, trataremos de algunos aspectos biobibliográficos y institucionales de la trayectoria del geógrafo. Reflections on the epistemological positions of Richard Hartshorne in The Nature of Geography

This article seeks to expose and analyze some aspects of the theoretical-metho- dological discussion about the nature of geographical science that are present in the work The Nature of Geography (1939) written by Richard Hartshorne (1899- 1992). We’ll review the definition of the purpose of Geography formulated by the author and then discuss some reflections offered by Hartshorne regarding the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the discipline. The analysis of these issues will be made from a wider concern with the understan- ding of the role of the author in academic Geography of the twentieth century and with the operation of constituting mechanisms of the scientific field in his work.Este artigo pretende expor e analisar alguns aspectos da discussão teórico-metodológica sobre a natureza da ciência geográfica presentes na obra The Nature of Geography (1939) de Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). Analisaremos a definição do propósito da Geografia formulada pelo autor e a reconstrução histórica que realiza na referida obra para edificar tal definição e posteriormente abordaremos algumas reflexões oferecidas por Hartshorne a respeito da relação entre os enfoques sistemático e regional na disciplina. The purpose of Geography and the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the work of Richard Hartshorne

A pesquisa consiste em um esforço de exposição, análise e interpretação de algumas questões teórico-metodológicas referentes à natureza da ciência geográfica presentes na obra do geógrafo estadunidense Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). O recorte de análise escolhido pretende, a partir da definição do propósito da Geografia formulada pelo autor, compreender suas reflexões a respeito da relação entre os enfoques sistemático e regional na disciplina e pensar seu papel na história do pensamento geográfico do século XX, buscando evidenciar a operação de determinados mecanismos constitutivos do campo científico e de certas posturas filosóficas em sua obra. Hartshorne deixou um extenso legado para a Geografia em importantes obras e artigos publicados, sobretudo, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1960. Dentre essas contribuições, as obras The Nature of Geography (1939) e Perspective on The Nature of Geography (1959) estão entre as mais importantes peças da extensa produção intelectual do autor. Essas duas obras, conjuntamente aos textos de alguns comentadores e críticos, constituem o material fundamental da nossa análise.The research consists in an effort to display, analysis and interpretation of some theoretical and methodological issues concerning the nature of geographical science in the works of American geographer Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). The chosen analysis clipping want, from the definition of the purpose of Geography formulated by the author, understand his reflections on the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the discipline and think his role in the history of geographical thought of the twentieth century in order to enhance the operation of certain constituent mechanisms of the scientific field and certain philosophical positions in his work. Hartshorne left an extensive legacy for Geography in important works and published articles, especially between the 1930s and 1960. Among these contributions, the works The Nature of Geography (1939) and Perspective on The Nature of Geography (1959) are among the most important parts of the extensive intellectual production of the author. These two works, together to the texts of some commentators and critics, are the fundamental material of our analysis

Social Darwinism in American Human Geography: a study of selected works by Ellsworth Huntington and Ellen Semple

A tese busca, à luz de uma preocupação metodológica que coloca em diálogo a História Intelectual e a História da Geografia, compreender o impacto do Darwinismo Social sobre o pensamento do final do século XIX e início do século XX, com o objetivo de elucidar as relações existentes entre essa corrente intelectual e a fundamentação epistemológica e filosófica das obras de Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947) e Ellen Semple (1863-1932), dois dos principais autores da Geografia Humana no contexto nacional estadunidense das décadas de 1900 a 1930. São estudadas as relações existentes entre a institucionalização da Geografia acadêmica nos EUA, a força do Darwinismo Social como um quadro de referência filosófico e epistemológico no campo intelectual do período, as trajetórias dos dois geógrafos e as ideias contidas nas obras \"Civilization and Climate\" (1915/1924), de Ellsworth Huntington, e \"Influences of Geographic Environment\" (1911), de Ellen Semple. Além dessas duas obras que recebem análises mais detalhadas, são abordadas outras contribuições de ambos à disciplina, buscando situar seus respectivos esforços intelectuais no quadro socioeconômico, geopolítico, epistemológico e ideológico mais amplo que caracterizou as primeiras décadas do século XX.The thesis seeks, under a methodological concern that puts in dialogue Intellectual History and History of Geography, to understand the impact of Social Darwinism on late nineteenth and early twentieth century thinking in order to elucidate existing relationships between this intellectual current and the epistemological and philosophical foundation of the works of Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947) and Ellen Semple (1863-1932), two of the leading authors of Human Geography in the USA national context from the 1900s to 1930s. The relationships among the institutionalization of academic geography in the USA, the strength of Social Darwinism as a philosophical and epistemological reference framework in the intellectual field of the period, the trajectories of the two geographers and the ideas contained in the works \"Civilization and Climate\" (1915/1924), by Ellsworth Huntington, and \"Influences of Geographic Environment\" (1911), by Ellen Semple, are studied along the thesis. In addition to these two works which receive more detailed analysis, other contributions of both of them for the discipline are addressed in order to situate their respective intellectual efforts in the broader socioeconomic, geopolitical, epistemological and ideological scenario that characterized the first decades of the twentieth century
