    Assessment of the risk due to release of carbon fiber in civil aircraft accidents, phase 2

    The risk associated with the potential use of carbon fiber composite material in commercial jet aircraft is investigated. A simulation model developed to generate risk profiles for several airports is described. The risk profiles show the probability that the cost due to accidents in any year exceeds a given amount. The computer model simulates aircraft accidents with fire, release of fibers, their downwind transport and infiltration of buildings, equipment failures, and resulting ecomomic impact. The individual airport results were combined to yield the national risk profile

    The Reaction-Diffusion Front for A+B→∅A+B \to\emptyset in One Dimension

    We study theoretically and numerically the steady state diffusion controlled reaction A+B→∅A+B\rightarrow\emptyset, where currents JJ of AA and BB particles are applied at opposite boundaries. For a reaction rate λ\lambda, and equal diffusion constants DD, we find that when λJ−1/2D−1/2≪1\lambda J^{-1/2} D^{-1/2}\ll 1 the reaction front is well described by mean field theory. However, for λJ−1/2D−1/2≫1\lambda J^{-1/2} D^{-1/2}\gg 1, the front acquires a Gaussian profile - a result of noise induced wandering of the reaction front center. We make a theoretical prediction for this profile which is in good agreement with simulation. Finally, we investigate the intrinsic (non-wandering) front width and find results consistent with scaling and field theoretic predictions.Comment: 11 pages, revtex, 4 separate PostScript figure

    Differences in the Leisure Activities of Mathematically Advanced Secondary School Students

    A survey designed to gather information about extracurricular and leisure activities was distributed to 332 tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students between March 30, 1997 and June 1, 1997. Two hundred and ten surveys from the original sample were analyzed by grouping the various activities into eleven activity indices. Each index was then compared statistically using a series of one-way ANOVAs, and Tukey\u27s box plots. Students were also divided into six groups based on their mathematical accomplishments, and their gender. Statistically significant differences were found for six of the eleven Activity Indices. The Academic Index, Math Index, and Science and Technology Index show that there are relationships (p \u3c 0.001) between the level of math achievement and participation in math, academic, and science and technology oriented activities, respectively. Students with the higher levels of mathematical achievement participate in these activities more often than students with lower levels of mathematical achievement. The Gaming Index demonstrates that both gender and mathematical achievement are related to participation in gaming activities such as role playing games, logic, board, and card games. Students with high levels of mathematical accomplishment were found to participate more frequently than other students. Males participate in gaming activities more frequently than females. The Music Index indicates that there are differences (p \u3c 0.01) between males and females, and among groups with different levels of mathematical accomplishment. Unlike the results for the other indices, the females are the most frequent participants in music related activities. Females with the highest mathematical accomplishments are also the most active in music related activities. The Social Index shows that there are differences (p \u3c 0.001) between males and females. The Social Index does not seem to be related to achievement in mathematics. The results show that students demonstrating a high level of mathematical accomplishment are more likely to participate in certain leisure activities. The data suggest that, except for social activities, gender is not nearly as important in the selection of leisure activities as the level of mathematical accomplishment

    An Instrumental Case Study: Growth Mindset Instructional Best Practices for Learning Disabled Students

    The problem that drove this study was that students who struggle in school, especially those with a non-intelligence-based learning disability, suffer from a fixed mindset after years of feelings of failure in school. This mindset causes them to develop maladaptive approaches to learning that inhibit success. The purpose of this study was to describe the best practices of reading teachers who have a reputation for high student achievement and who adhere to a growth mindset in an effort to build a growth mindset culture with their students. This qualitative instrumental case study was conducted through interviews of eleven reading teachers/specialists from both elementary and secondary education. The findings indicated that students who have a fixed mindset of learning due to a learning disability often demonstrate maladaptive approaches to learning that include shutting down, avoidance behaviors, and acting out behaviors. The findings revealed several strategies that can effectively help these struggling students move from a fixed mindset to more of a growth mindset. These strategies included creating a safe and trustful class environment, creating success experiences for students, and teaching brain science and mindset theory. Finally, the findings revealed obstacles that teachers face in their work to move these students to a growth mindset to improve their achievement and the practices they use to overcome those obstacles
