A search for X-ray pulsations from the galactic center
Data from the SAS-3 satellite were used in a search for X-ray pulsations from the direction of the galactic center. No periodic X-ray behavior was detected in the frequency interval 0.6 Hz to 0.0006 Hz and energy range 2.5 - 35 keV. For periods less than 60 sec, the upper limit to the amplitude of any pulsation in the 2.5 - 10 keV band is approximately .0017 cts/sq cm/s. This corresponds to a pulsed fraction of approximately 1.3 percent of the total GCX flux. Somewhat higher limits apply for longer periods and for energies greater than 10 keV
Nouvelle découverte d'empreintes laissées par des dinosaures dans la formation des couches rouges (bassin de Cuzco-Sicuani, Sud du Pérou) : conséquences stratigraphiques et tectoniques
La découverte d'empreintes laissées par le dinosaures vers le sommet de la formation des Couches Rouges permet de préciser la stratigraphie du Sud du Pérou. La durée de la sédimentation continentale du bassin de Cuzco-Sicuani n'excéderait pas 20 Ma (santonien - paléocène) et non plus 45 Ma, comme cela était jusqu'à présent admis. Le bassin d'avant-pays de Cuzco-Sicuani est caractérisé par une déformation synsédimentaire essentiellement compressive pendant toute la durée de la sédimentation des "Couches Rouges". En conséquence, une durée équivalente à celle de cette sédimentation peut être retenue pour ces événements tectoniques qui marquent ici le début de la surrection de la chaîne andine. La phase péruvienne, traditionnellement placée vers 85 Ma, représenterait ainsi le début de ces événements tectoniques. (Résumé d'auteur
Detection of Pulsed X-ray Emission from XMM-Newton Observations of PSR J0538+2817
We report on the XMM-Newton observations of the 143 ms pulsar PSR J0538+2817.
We present evidence for the first detections of pulsed X-rays from the source
at a frequency which is consistent with the predicted radio frequency. The
pulse profile is broad and asymmetric, with a pulse fraction of 18 +/- 3%. We
find that the spectrum of the source is well-fit with a blackbody with
T^{infty} = (2.12^{+0.04}_{-0.03}) x 10^6 K and N_{H} = 2.5 x 10^21 cm^{-2}.
The radius determined from the model fit of 1.68 +/- 0.05 km suggests that the
emission is from a heated polar cap. A fit to the spectrum with an atmospheric
model reduces the inferred temperature and hence increases the radius of the
emitting region, however the pulsar distance determined from the fit is then
smaller than the dispersion distance.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ. Error

Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma to Submandibular Gland: A Rare Occurrence
Approximately 20-30% of patients affected by renal cell carcinoma (RCC) present with metastatic disease, and
20% to 40% undergoing nephrectomy for clinically localized disease will develop metastases. A 53 years old female
patient developed a left submandibular swelling. Four years before she experienced a left radical nephrectomy for a
clear cell tumor and two years later right kidney was removed for a cancer having the same histologic subtype. In
that circumstance duodenal pancreasectomy was required for infiltration of pancreatic gland. A sialoadenectomy has
been performed and pathology demonstrated an intraglandular neoplasm with characteristics of a clear renal cell
carcinoma. Although it is extremely rare, submandibular salivary gland may be a site of RCC metastasis. Diagnosis
of metastatic disease for patients affected by submandibular swelling with a previous history of RCC should be
always considered
Differential expression of voltage-gated K+ currents in medial septum/diagonal band complex neurons exhibiting distinct firing phenotypes
The medial septum/diagonal band complex (MSDB) controls hippocampal excitability, rhythms and plastic processes. Medial septal neuronal populations display heterogeneous firing patterns. In addition, some of these populations degenerate during age-related disorders (e.g. cholinergic neurons). Thus, it is particularly important to examine the intrinsic properties of theses neurons in order to create new agents that effectively modulate hippocampal excitability and enhance memory processes. Here, we have examined the properties of voltage-gated, K+ currents in electrophysiologically-identified neurons. These neurons were taken from young rat brain slices containing the MS/DB complex. Whole-cell, patch recordings of outward currents were obtained from slow firing, fast-spiking, regular-firing and burst-firing neurons. Slow firing neurons showed depolarization-activated K+ current peaks and densities larger than in other neuronal subtypes. Slow firing total current exhibited an inactivating A-type current component that activates at subthreshold depolarization and was reliably blocked by high concentrations of 4-AP. In addition, slow firing neurons expressed a low-threshold delayed rectifier K+ current component with slow inactivation and intermediate sensitivity to tetraethylamonium. Fast-spiking neurons exhibited the smaller IK and IA current densities. Burst and regular firing neurons displayed an intermediate firing phenotype with IK and IA current densities that were larger than the ones observed in fastspiking neurons but smaller than the ones observed in slow-firing neurons. In addition, the prevalence of each current differed among electrophysiological groups with slow firing and regular firing neurons expressing mostly IA and fast spiking and bursting neurons exhibiting mostly delayer rectifier K+ currents with only minimal contributions of the IA. The pharmacological or genetic modulations of these currents constitute an important target for the treatment of age-related disorders
