    Commercial fisheries in a mega unregulated floodplain river: assessment of the most favourable hydrological conditions for its preservation

    This paper deals with the hydrological variability effects on the primary commercial fish species inhabiting the main channel and the floodplain of the large Paraná River in its middle reaches in Argentina. Analysing more than eight decades (1935–2016) of information on the most frequent and abundant commercial species in conjunction with hydrological levels and temperature, our results show that spring–summer floods of a certain magnitude (c. 6 m) and durations (> 80 days) are crucial for sustaining commercial fisheries. Moreover, the frequency of these floods was modulated by the decadal climatic fluctuations that have occurred over the past 100 years in the Paraná Basin.     A new space Digital Signal Processor design

    The increasing demand of on-board real-time processing represents one of the critical issues in forthcoming scientific and commercial European space missions. Faster and faster signal and image processing algorithms are required to accomplish planetary observation, surveillance, Synthetic Aperture Radar imaging and telecommunications, especially due to the importance of elaborate the sensing data before sending them to the Earth, in order to exploit effectively the bandwidth to the ground station. The only available space-qualified Digital Signal Processor (DSP) free of International Traffic in Arms Regulations restrictions (ATMEL TSC21020) faces a poor performance of 60 MFLOPs peak, and it is becoming inadequate to fulfill the computation demand of the space missions. For this reason, the development of a new generation of space-qualified DSP is well known in the European space community. The space-qualified DSP architecture proposed in this work fills the gap between the computational requirements and the available devices. Additionally, it has been implemented using technologies available in Europe without any restriction. The DSP processor leverages a pipelined and massively parallel core based on the Very Long Instruction Word paradigm, with 64 registers and 8 operational units. The rest of the System-on-Chip architecture consists in the instruction and the data cache memories, the memory controllers and two SpaceWire interfaces. The processor, implemented in CMOS 65 nm technology, reaches an operational frequency of 120 MHz and area occupation of around 350 Kgates. The correlated Software Development Environment (SDE), with compiler, assembler, linker, debugger and instruction-level simulator, allows for an easy programming of the device in C language

    Fishes and environment in northwestern Argentina: from lowland to Puna

    The fish fauna and its relationships with physiography and climate were studied in northwestern Argentina from 21°30′ S to 26°30′ S and 63°30′ W to 65°50′ W, an area about 10,276 km2. Along a southeast–northwest gradient, the Chaco forest at low altitudes gives way to the Yungas cloud forest in highlands, and then, to an increasing desertic landscape, with xerophytic vegetation and scarce rainfall along the Grande River. Finally, extreme desert conditions prevail in the most northern part at the Puna plateau. Water chemistry was sampled from sites from 400 to over 3800 m a.s.l. In all 3278 fish specimens of 52 species were collected. Previous lists included 84 species. Only 19 were shared, meaning that 40 species are new for the area and/or particular localities, including 7 reports from Aguas Calientes. These results increase by one third the number of species in northwestern Argentina. The fish fauna was represented by eurytopic species of Paranensean genera as Astyanax, Bryconamericus and other characoids, mixed with locally distributed siluriforms. Under extreme climatic conditions, species of Trichomycterus predominate. Species assemblages show a combination of a large number of species typical of, sometimes endemic to or rather abundant in, the area, combined with a few species of Paranensean character. Fish assemblages were clearly defined by faunistic composition and distribution related with physiography and climate traits. A significant negative correlation is observed between both species number and abundance, and increasing altitude, and positive relationships exist with mean annual temperature and other climate traits. Diversity values (Shannon index) agree with the described pattern of increasing impoverishment of the fish fauna of northwestern Argentina, along gradients of increasing altitude and dryness and decreasing temperatureFil: Menni, Roberto Carlos.
