    Vortex and gap generation in gauge models of graphene

    Effective quantum field theoretical continuum models for graphene are investigated. The models include a complex scalar field and a vector gauge field. Different gauge theories are considered and their gap patterns for the scalar, vector, and fermion excitations are investigated. Different gauge groups lead to different relations between the gaps, which can be used to experimentally distinguish the gauge theories. In this class of models the fermionic gap is a dynamic quantity. The finite-energy vortex solutions of the gauge models have the flux of the "magnetic field" quantized, making the Bohm-Aharonov effect active even when external electromagnetic fields are absent. The flux comes proportional to the scalar field angular momentum quantum number. The zero modes of the Dirac equation show that the gauge models considered here are compatible with fractionalization

    Intestinal Amyloidosis in common variable immunodeficiency and Rheumatoid Arthritis

    We present a case of reactive amyloidosis that developed secondary to common variable immunodeficiency and rheumatoid arthritis. A 66-year-old woman, with prior history of common variable immunodeficiency and rheumatoid arthritis, was referred to our clinic for chronic diarrhea investigation. The patient was submitted to colonoscopy with ileoscopy, which did not show relevant endoscopic alterations. However, undertaken biopsies revealed amyloid deposition. Since amyloidosis with GI involvement is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea, this pathology should be considered in etiologic investigation, especially when associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    In vivo "real-time" monitoring of glucose in the brain with an amperometric enzyme-based biosensor based on gold coated tungsten (W-Au) microelectrodes

    Biosensors based on Pt or Pt/Ir based needle-type microelectrodes have been successfully employed for continuous in vivo real-time brain biomonitoring of biomarkers such as glutamate and glucose. However, when implanted, these biosensors often bend, thereby damaging its surface and degrading its bioanalytical properties. In addition, downscaling of Pt and Pt/Ir needle-type biosensors, to improve the spatial resolution and decrease tissue damage, is technically challenging. In that sense, we investigated whether the use of a material with low malleability, tungsten (W), coated with a highly conductive material, gold (Au) could be as an alternative for conventional needle-type based biosensors. Therefore, we developed implantable needle-type (50 tim 0) gold coated tungsten (W-Au) amperometric microbiosensors. First, we evaluated electrochemically, the ability of W-Au microelectrodes (50 tim 0) to continuously monitor changes in H2O2. After, we functionalized, using a layer-by-layer assembly, the surface of W-Au microelectrodes. First with permselective membrane(s) (Nafion and Nafion-PPD) and after with an enzymatic hydrogel, containing an enzyme selective for glucose (glucose oxidase). Both the enzyme loading and the applied potential were optimized and the performance of functionalized W-Au microelectrodes and fully assembled biosensors was evaluated electrochemically. Additionally, the surface of bare and functionalized microelectrodes was also characterized by imaging techniques (scanning electron microscopy). In vivo experiments revealed that, W-Au based glucose biosensors, were able to accurately monitor, in real-time, changes in brain glucose in response to relevant pharmacological challenges.     Perinatal Outcome and Change in Body Mass Index in Mothers of Dichorionic Twins: a Longitudinal Cohort Study

    We used a prospective cohort to analyze the effect of change in BMI rather than change in weight, in mothers carrying dichorionic twins from a population that did not receive any dietary intervention. A total of 269 mothers (150 nulliparas and 119 multiparas) were evaluated. The average change (%) from the pre-gravid BMI was 7.2+/-6.1, 17.4+/-8.2, and 28.7+/-10.8, at 12-14, 22-25, and 30-34 weeks, respectively, without difference between nulliparas and multiparas. The comparison between maternities below or above the average change from the pregravid BMI failed to demonstrate an advantage (in terms of total twin birthweight and gestational age) of an above average change from the pregravid BMI, even when the lower versus upper quartiles were compared. Our observations reached different conclusions regarding the recommended universal dietary intervention in twin gestations. A cautious approach is advocated towards seemingly harmless excess weight gain, as normal weight women may turn overweight, or even obese, by the end of pregnancy, and be exposed to the untoward effects of obesity on future health and body image
