    Unilateral progressive osseous heteroplasia

    Get PDF
A 50-year-old male patient presented with firm subcutaneous nodules and plaques with a gritty texture, unilaterally affecting the left side of the trunk and the left limbs. These lesions had had a progressive course since early childhood and caused functional impairment. There was no family history of similar disorders. No phospho-calcium metabolism abnormalities were observed. Biopsies of the affected areas demonstrated osteoma cutis. Analysis of DNA showed no mutation of the GNAS gene. The clinical features were consistent with progressive osseous heteroplasia, atypically presented in a unilateral form, probably revealing a mosaic distribution

Lupus and Pregnancy. 15 Years of Experience in a Tertiary Center

This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the outcome of pregnancies in women diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) followed in a tertiary fetal–maternal center. Data were collected from clinical charts between January 1993 and December 2007, with a total of 136 pregnancies (107 patients). Mean maternal age was 29 years, with the vast majority of patients being Caucasian. Most patients were in remission 6 months prior to pregnancy (93%) and the most frequently affected organs were the skin and joints. Renal lupus accounted for 14% of all cases. Twenty-nine percent of patients were positive for at least one antiphospholid antibody (aPL) and nearly 50% had positive SSa/SSb antibodies. All patients with positive aPL received low-dosage aspirin and low molecular- weight heparin (LMWH). There were no pregnancy complications in more than 50% of cases and hypertensive disease and intrauterine growth restriction were the most common adverse events. There were 125 live births, one neonatal death, eight miscarriages, and three medical terminations of pregnancy. Preterm delivery occurred in 25% of pregnancies. Our results are probably the conjoined result of a multidisciplinary approach together with a systematic management of SLE pregnancies, with most patients keeping their prior SLE medication combined with low-dosage aspirin and LMWH in the presence of aPL

Translocation of cyanogenic glycosides in rubber tree crown clones resistant to South American leaf blight.

Abstract – The objective of this work was to assess the possible transport of cyanogenic glycosides from leaves of rubber tree crown clones (Hevea spp.) resistant to South American leaf blight to the trunk of the panel clones in which they are grafted. The cyanogenic potential (HCNp) of the crown clones was determined in the trunk bark, at different distances from the cambium, and its gradient was evaluated along the trunk. The correlation between the HCNp of the crown leaves and that of the trunk bark was also evaluated. HCNp determined in leaves showed a wide range variation in the species studied as crown clones, with the lowest values registered in H. nitida clones, and the highest ones in H. rigidifolia. In the trunk bark, the tissue layer nearer the cambium showed higher HCNp values. A positive basipetal gradient was observed along the trunk, i.e., there was an increase in HCNp from the apex toward the base. Although the grafted crowns influence the cyanogenic potential of the trunk bark of panel clones, the absence of correlation between the HCNp of the leaves and trunk bark indicates that the crown is not the main source of the cyanogenic glycosides found in the trunk.

Isolation and characterization of a lignin-like polymer of the cork of Quercus suber L

    Get PDF
A lignin-like polymer was successfully extracted from the cork of Quercus suber L. using an organosolv-based technique. This material was characterized by elemental analysis, functional group analysis, nitrobenzene oxidation followed by HPLC analysis of the oxidation products, FTIR and liquid I3C NMR. The evidence thus obtained indicated that the extracted material was composed mainly of a lignin-like polymer covalently bound to residual aliphatic structures which are not present in common lignins and which have been assigned to suberin. The latter is likely to be attached to the oxygenated side chains of the phenolic polymer but bonding through the aromatic ring can also be envisaged. No residual carbohydrates were detected. The phenolic polymer, composed mainly of guaiacyl-type units and small amounts of syringyl-type units, had a low methoxy content and a high degree of condensation. This polymer showed the presence of a fraction containing CeCn units with n < 3 or even n < 2.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
