    Authentic Pedagogical Approaches for Teaching and Learning Bluegrass Fiddling, Including an Examination of Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe

    Despite the vast amount of research showing that learning an alternative string style such as bluegrass increases student motivation, interest, and retention in music programs, modern private violin instructors and string orchestra teachers who lacked exposure to bluegrass in their initial training do not feel they can authentically teach bluegrass fiddling to their students. A comprehensive bluegrass fiddle curriculum incorporating elements of classical and bluegrass music has not yet been developed. The curriculum would allow diverse musical exploration through structured and sequential bluegrass fiddling pedagogy. This qualitative research study identifies, examines, and compares current bluegrass fiddle methodologies as a framework for developing a comprehensive curriculum for teachers and students to use in lessons and the classroom to enhance learning and performing bluegrass fiddle music. It explores first-hand accounts of the history of bluegrass music through interviews with musicians who worked directly with Bill Monroe, analyses of fiddle transcriptions, and an examination of the oral tradition of learning by ear. Detailed transcriptions of the monumental album Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe establish playing techniques students need to know when learning bluegrass fiddling. This study encourages further research into how to teach bluegrass courses for teachers and ways instructors can apply bluegrass pedagogy to other traditional bluegrass instruments such as mandolin, guitar, and banjo.     Dissipation and Tunnelling in Quantum Hall Bilayers

    We discuss the interplay between transport and intrinsic dissipation in quantum Hall bilayers, within the framework of a simple thought experiment. We compute, for the first time, quantum corrections to the semiclassical dynamics of this system. This allows us to re-interpret tunnelling measurements on these systems. We find a strong peak in the zero-temperature tunnelling current that arises from the decay of Josephson-like oscillations into incoherent charge fluctuations. In the presence of an in-plane field, resonances in the tunnelling current develop an asymmetric lineshape.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A global ‘greening’ of coastal dunes: an integrated consequence of climate change?

    In the context of global climate change and sea-level rise, coastal dunes are often important elements in the coastal response to storm wave and storm surge impacts on coastal lowlands. Vegetation cover, in turn, has profound impacts on coastal dune morphology and storm-buffering function; it binds existing sediment, promotes fresh sediment accumulation and thereby increases dune volume and dune crest elevation where a sediment-plant interaction plays out with vegetation growth attempting to out-pace the vertical sediment accumulation. A global analysis shows that vegetation cover has increased substantially on multiple, geographically dispersed, coastal dune fields on all continents in the period 1984–2017. The observed ‘greening’ points to enhanced dune stability and storm buffering effects at a time when, paradoxically, coasts are being subjected to increased flood and erosion risk from rising sea levels and changing patterns of storminess. Causal attribution of biological trends to climate change is complicated, but we contend that the global scale ‘greening’ of coastal dunes is driven by a combination of changes to climate and atmospheric composition and reflects the cumulative effects of changes in temperature, precipitation, nutrient concentration and reduced windiness (global stilling). Global-scale increases in temperature, nutrients and precipitation (all of which are vegetation growth stimulants) and widespread reduction in windiness (“stilling”) (which reduces sediment activity, promoting the spread of vegetation) coincide in time with the observed changes in vegetation cover. The observed changes in coastal dunefields enhance contemporary and near-future coastal resilience to climate change and may represent a previously unrecognised morphological feedback mediated by climate changeNatural Environment Research Council, NERC | Ref.     Quantum and Classical Dissipative Effects on Tunnelling in Quantum Hall Bilayers

    We discuss the interplay between transport and dissipation in quantum Hall bilayers. We show that quantum effects are relevant in the pseudospin picture of these systems, leading either to direct tunnelling currents or to quantum dissipative processes that damp oscillations around the ground state.
