    The model area in successful lean transformation and scale modeling

    The True Lean System Program at the University of Kentucky was created in 1994 to study how the development of the Toyota Production System (TPS) contributes to Toyota’s success. This increased understanding of Toyota’s experience would provide useful guidance to Western companies taking on the challenges of replicating Toyota’s success within their own organizations. The common struggle point shared by the companies who come to us is their inability to establish sustainable TPS-based Lean transformations throughout their organizations. Our work with these companies along with our study of Toyota’s own experience in bringing TPS to its own American operations has led to a belief that a major obstacle to adopting and implementing TPS into Western organizations is a lack of understanding of the essential motivational mechanisms embodied in TPS. It was these motivational factors that originally triggered the creativity and innovation of Toyota’s workforce in the context of Japanese culture. In bringing TPS to America, Fujio Cho recognized the need to pay attention to these same motivational factors with an American workforce, particularly in light of the fundamental cultural differences between Toyota’s Japanese workforce and their Western counterparts. This TPS-cultural difference needs to be clearly understood to enable Western companies to successfully transform into TPS-driven organizations. TPS is based on a learning-by-doing methodology which has lent itself to a transformative process in which organizations apply the principles of TPS and kaizen in a limited model area before spreading to the entire organization. The result of this application produces a series of incremental (often small) improvements which may be explained with the help of scale modeling principles and methodology. This paper is our first attempt to show the direct applicability of scale modeling concepts/methodology to the model area approach for successful TPS transformation, including the role of standardization and problem solving in Kaizen. i.e. continuous improvement. Our new findings show promising first steps for organizations and TPS/Lean researchers facing the twin challenges of establishing sustainable TPS/Lean models and subsequently scaling them up along a pathway defined by the needs to achieve full scale TPS/Lean organizational transformations

    There is a prevailing belief within the United States Department of Defense (DOD) that social media is a threat to national security, leading to restrictions in workplace use of social-media applications. However, instead of dismissing social media as a threat, leaders should be asking whether or not the information received via social media can be trusted, thus leveraging the information-sharing capabilities of social media. This article presents a theoretical case for quantifying social media trustworthiness by exploring the factors that influence trust in social media and proposing a trust framework to be used to quantify trustworthiness

    The virtual Haken conjecture: Experiments and examples

    A 3-manifold is Haken if it contains a topologically essential surface. The Virtual Haken Conjecture says that every irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group has a finite cover which is Haken. Here, we discuss two interrelated topics concerning this conjecture. First, we describe computer experiments which give strong evidence that the Virtual Haken Conjecture is true for hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We took the complete Hodgson-Weeks census of 10,986 small-volume closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and for each of them found finite covers which are Haken. There are interesting and unexplained patterns in the data which may lead to a better understanding of this problem. Second, we discuss a method for transferring the virtual Haken property under Dehn filling. In particular, we show that if a 3-manifold with torus boundary has a Seifert fibered Dehn filling with hyperbolic base orbifold, then most of the Dehn filled manifolds are virtually Haken.     Technical Challenges Associated with In-Air Wingtip Docking of Aircraft in Forward Flight

    Autonomous in-air wingtip docking of aircraft offers significant opportunity for system level performance gains for numerous aircraft applications. Several of the technical challenges facing wingtip docking of fixed-wing aircraft are addressed in this paper, including: close proximity aerodynamic coupling; mechanisms and operations for robust docking; and relative state estimation methods. A simulation framework considering the aerodynamics, rigid-body dynamics, and vehicle controls is developed and used to perform docking sensitivity studies for a system of two 5.5% scale NASA Generic Transport Model aircraft. Additionally, proof of- concept testing of a candidate docking mechanism designed to move the primary wingtip vortex inboard suggests the viability of such an approach for achieving robust docking
