NASA research on structures and materials for supersonic cruise aircraft

    Get PDF
The technology and data base necessary for sound technical decisions regarding long haul supersonic cruise aircraft transportation systems are considered. The objectives and status of the research elements in the structures and materials program phase of the program are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on reductions in structural mass by research on advanced structural concepts, light-weight materials, improved loads, aeroelastic predictive techniques, and by development of efficient structural design procedures

A review of satellite time-transfer technology: Accomplishments and future applications

    Get PDF
The research accomplishments by NASA in meeting the needs of the space program for precise time in satellite tracking are presented. As a major user of precise time signals for clock synchronization of NASA's worldwide satellite tracking networks, the agency provides much of the necessary impetus for the development of stable frequency sources and time synchronization technology. The precision time required for both satellite tracking and space science experiments has increased at a rate of about one order of magnitude per decade from 1 millisecond in the 1950's to 100 microseconds during the Apollo era in the 1960's to 10 microseconds in the 1970's. For the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, satellite timing requirements will be extended to 1 microsecond and below. These requirements are needed for spacecraft autonomy and data packeting

Scattering Theory for Quantum Hall Anyons in a Saddle Point Potential

We study the theory of scattering of two anyons in the presence of a quadratic saddle-point potential and a perpendicular magnetic field. The scattering problem decouples in the centre-of-mass and the relative coordinates. The scattering theory for the relative coordinate encodes the effects of anyon statistics in the two-particle scattering. This is fully characterized by two energy-dependent scattering phase shifts. We develop a method to solve this scattering problem numerically, using a generalized lowest Landau level approximation.Comment: 5 pages. Published version, with clarified presentatio

Dutch listeners' use of suprasegmental cues to English stress

    Get PDF
Dutch listeners outperform native listeners in identifying syllable stress in English. This is because lexical stress is more useful in recognition of spoken words of Dutch than of English, so that Dutch listeners pay greater attention to stress in general. We examined Dutch listeners’ use of the acoustic correlates of English stress. Primary- and secondary-stressed syllables differ significantly on acoustic measures, and some differences, in F0 especially, correlate with data of earlier listening experiments. The correlations found in the Dutch responses were not paralleled in data from native listeners. Thus the acoustic cues which distinguish English primary versus secondary stress are better exploited by Dutch than by native listeners
